The Oke Ibadan North Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Eleyele, Ibadan, has donated 20 units of solar-powered streetlights to the Oyo State College of Health Sciences and Technology (OYSCOHEST) as part of efforts to enhance security on campus, particularly at night.
The donation, facilitated by the LCDA Political Head, Honourable Abdul Ganiyu Omotoso, is aimed at improving visibility across the college environment and strengthening safety for the students, staff and members of the College community.
During an inspection of the installation alongside members of the College Management and top officials of the LCDA, Honourable Omotoso expressed satisfaction with the project. He commended the College Management, led by the Provost, Pharmacist Mrs. Oluyemisi Oyewo, for providing a conducive environment that facilitated the successful execution of the initiative.
Omotoso noted that the intervention aligns with the broader security agenda of Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, emphasizing that improved illumination would deter criminal activities on campus. According to him, well-lit surroundings make it significantly harder for individuals with criminal intent to operate undetected.
He also urged the College Management to ensure proper maintenance and security of the installed facilities to guarantee their longevity and effectiveness.
The LCDA Chairman further used the opportunity to commend Governor Makinde, who is the Visitor to the College, for his continued investment in both the education and health sectors across the state.
As part of his visit, Honourable Omotoso toured the College’s ICT Centre, where he pledged additional support to enhance its capacity.
In her remarks, the Provost of the College, Pharmacist Mrs. Oluyemisi Oyewo, expressed gratitude to the LCDA for the generous donation, assuring that the facilities would be properly maintained. She also called on well-meaning individuals, organisations, and other stakeholders to support the institution in addressing its infrastructural needs.
Describing OYSCOHEST as a 93-year-old institution with growing demands, the Provost stressed the importance of sustained partnerships in advancing the College’s development for the benefit of its students and the wider community.
It was gathered that the donation followed an earlier engagement between the College Management and the LCDA leadership, during which the Council Head pledged support for the institution.
The solar-powered lights have since been strategically installed across key locations within the campus to ensure effective night-time illumination.
Students who spoke on the development expressed appreciation for the initiative, noting that the improved lighting would enhance safety and create a more conducive learning environment.
