The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has announced the re-launch of its flagship programmes, “Oyo NUJ Hot Seat” and “Oyo NUJ Bi-Monthly Guest Forum,” as part of efforts to deepen democratic engagement and promote professional journalism.

The union in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Comrade Akeem Abas and Secretary, Comrade Temidayo Adu,  said the initiative was aimed at providing credible platform for interaction between public office holders and the people.

It said that programmes would also strengthen the role of the media in fostering accountability and transparency.

Olatunji Declares 2027 Governorship Bid, Unveils “Leadership Redefined” Agenda for Oyo State

Kunle Olatunji (KTJ) has formally declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027, expressing strong confidence in his vision to succeed the incumbent governor, Seyi Makinde.

In what many observers describe as a bold and unconventional move within the Oyo State political landscape, Olatunji—popularly known as KTJ—positions himself as a reform-driven candidate determined to reshape governance in the state.

His declaration follows his resignation in compliance with the March 30 presidential directive requiring political appointees seeking elective offices to step down. Until recently, he served as Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to Senator Yunus Akintunde. He had also previously served in a similar capacity to the late former Governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

Olatunji noted that, despite being relatively unknown to the broader public, he has played strategic roles in the emergence of several past leaders in Oyo State, working closely with key stakeholders in political planning and election management.

Speaking on his motivation, he stated that his decision to run is driven by firsthand experience of governance challenges, including what he described as a lack of empathy, focus, and purposeful leadership required for sustainable growth and development.

“I have been actively involved in the evolution of Oyo State’s political landscape and have witnessed, firsthand, the persistent challenges of governance. This has strengthened my resolve to contribute meaningfully to a new direction,” he said.

Olatunji emphasized his commitment to building a leadership model anchored on integrity, empathy, accountability, and purposeful vision. According to him, his ambition is to collaborate with like-minded individuals to restore public trust, drive inclusive governance, and reposition Oyo State as a model for effective leadership in Nigeria.

He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in a well-structured strategy that will involve robust stakeholder engagement and innovative governance solutions.

As part of his campaign rollout, Olatunji announced plans to unveil a comprehensive political strategy under the theme: “Leadership Redefined for Desired Growth and Development in Oyo State.”

“I am not in this race merely to participate,” he affirmed. “I am committed to working with the people of Oyo State to reposition our state as a pacesetter and a catalyst for the emergence of the Nigeria of our dreams.

Oyo Govt Deepens Partnership with FAO for Agricultural Growth

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining and strengthening its partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to enhance agricultural practices and boost food security across the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Musbau Babatunde, gave this assurance on behalf of Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, while receiving the newly appointed FAO Country Representative at the SSG Conference Room, Secretariat, Ibadan.

Prof. Babatunde stated that the current administration is committed to harnessing strategic partnerships with international development organisations like the FAO to promote innovation, boost agricultural productivity, and achieve sustainable rural development.

He emphasized that agriculture remains a key pillar in the state’s economic agenda, adding that collaboration with global bodies would further support farmers with modern techniques, capacity building, and access to improved inputs.

The SSG also highlighted the various interventions of the state government in the agricultural sector, stressing that Oyo State is open to more technical support and knowledge exchange that would enhance value chains and promote food sufficiency.

his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye, explained that the present administration in the state has made significant progress in the agricultural sector.

He highlighted key interventions such as the promotion of mechanized farming, including the introduction of a 50 percent tractorization subsidy to support farmers, distribution of improved seedlings and farm inputs.

Also, provision of fertilizers at subsidized rates, rehabilitation of rural farm roads, irrigation support programmes, and strengthening of extension services to reach farmers at the grassroots.

He added that the government has also intensified efforts in livestock development, fisheries support, youth engagement in agribusiness, and the promotion of agro-processing and value addition to reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers’ income.

In his remarks, the FAO Country Representative, Hussein Gadain, commended the Oyo State Government for its proactive approach to agricultural development and expressed readiness to deepen collaboration in areas such as climate-smart agriculture, agribusiness development, and food systems transformation.

Dr. Gadain further highlighted the contributions of the FAO to agricultural development in Nigeria, including support for smallholder farmers through capacity building, provision of climate-resilient seeds, promotion of sustainable farming practices, pest and disease control interventions, and strengthening of food systems.

He noted that the organization has also been actively involved in supporting farmers with early warning systems, digital agricultural solutions, and resilience-building programmes aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and improving food security nationwide.

OYHA Assures Accelerated Passage of Social Protection Bill

The Oyo State House of Assembly (OYHA) has assured that the proposed Social Protection Bill will receive accelerated consideration and prompt passage once it is formally drafted and transmitted by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, gave the assurance during an interactive session with lawmakers on social protection, organised by the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning in collaboration with UNICEF and the European Union Support to Sustainable Social Protection Systems in Nigeria (EU-SUSI).

The meeting was held  recently  at Hotel De Haruna Plaza, Oyo.

Represented by the Majority Leader and member representing Ogbomoso South Constituency, Hon. Soji Adedoyin, the Speaker noted that the Assembly recognises its responsibility in providing a legal framework that will guarantee the continuity and sustainability of social protection programmes beyond changes in government.

He explained that the speed of passage would depend on the timely completion and submission of the draft bill by the Ministry.

“As custodians of executive bills, we are ready to give this bill accelerated passage because of its importance to the people of Oyo State, especially the vulnerable, including children, women and the economically disadvantaged,” he said.

Ogundoyin further assured that the Assembly would not delay legislative action on the bill and would also ensure proper oversight of its implementation in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. He added that members of the House are already being sensitised and are prepared to act swiftly once the bill is presented.

In his keynote address, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Barr. Seun Ashamu, stressed the need to harmonise existing social protection initiatives into a single legal framework.

He said the state government has over the years implemented various programmes, including conditional and unconditional cash transfers, the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme, and agricultural support initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of residents.

According to him, the proposed bill seeks to consolidate these interventions into a coordinated and inclusive system that will be easily accessible to the poor and vulnerable across the state.

“The objective is to institutionalise and integrate these programmes into a unified social protection system that will ensure sustainability and long-term impact,” he said.

Hon. Ashamu added that the initiative is being driven in partnership with UNICEF and the European Union, noting that the engagement with lawmakers is to facilitate better understanding and ensure smooth passage of the bill.

He further explained that the bill would make social protection a statutory responsibility of government, guaranteeing sustained funding and implementation regardless of changes in administration.

Also speaking, the Social Policy Manager, UNICEF Lagos Office, Mr. Muhammad Okorie, commended the Oyo State Government for its commitment to social protection through policy direction and budgetary provisions.

He noted that significant allocations to education, healthcare and social protection in the 2025 budget reflect the government’s dedication to improving the welfare of its citizens.

Okorie, however, pointed out the need to bridge the gap between budgetary provisions and actual impact on vulnerable populations, stressing the importance of legislative backing.

“Without a solid legal framework, clear governance structure and predictable financing, social protection programmes remain exposed to policy changes and economic shocks, often affecting the most vulnerable,” he said.

He added that UNICEF has been supporting the state in strengthening social protection systems and emphasised that legal backing is the next critical step to ensure continuity and effectiveness.

Okorie expressed confidence that the bill would receive speedy legislative attention, noting the commitment shown by lawmakers.

Debo Akande: The Making of a System Builder

By Wale Ajao

There are some stories that are not immediately visible in public life. But they shape everything that comes after.

For many, the name Dr Debo Akande has only recently entered public conversation. What is less known is the journey that shaped the discipline behind the work.

I

n a recent interview, Dr Akande speaks to the journey that has led him down the path to where he has become a strategic name in the Oyo State conversation.

At the age of seventeen, he lost his father.

In that moment, a decision had to be made about responsibility. Resources were scarce. So, he and his elder brother, chose to step back. On his own part, he held off tertiary education for nearly a decade so that his younger siblings could have the opportunity to go to school first.

It was not an easy decision. But it was a defining one.

What followed was not a straight path.

He worked. He traded – selling bread in traffic and later working as a trainee clearing agent in NAHCO. He navigated life at a time when survival itself required focus and resilience.

But even then, there was a quiet discipline. A refusal to lose sight of something unfinished.

He continued to read, learn and prepare.

At one point, like many young Africans searching for opportunity, he attempted to cross into Europe through the desert.

It did not work.

But that experience became part of a deeper understanding of struggle, of risk, and of the realities many young people face when opportunity is not structured.

Eventually after nine years of wilderness, he found another path.

Through persistence and support, he gained admission to study International Development in the United Kingdom. Thus, returning to formal education with clarity and purpose.

Along the way, mentorship played a defining role.

Not always from older figures, but often from peers - individuals whose guidance and perspective helped shape decisions at critical moments.

That experience would later influence a strong belief:

That mentorship is not a luxury. Mentorship is a necessity in shaping the direction of young people.

Earlier influences also mattered.

From his father, and from his uncle who gave him the opportunity to work as a political clerk. This came early exposure to grassroots realities in the second republic years of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and third republic Social Democratic Party (SDP). This shaped an understanding of how people, structures and power interact in practice.

Years later, those lessons would prove useful in governance.

For example, during the COVID-19 period, while coordinating aspects of agricultural intervention in Oyo State, a situation emerged.

A distribution plan had been developed and vetted at the state level.

But at the local level, community stakeholders felt excluded.

The response was immediate… and forceful and his team was turned back.

It was a moment that could have ended the effort.

Instead, it became a lesson.

The approach was rethought.

Engagement was prioritised.

Conversations were held.

Local realities were acknowledged.

And when the team returned, they did so differently, with a structure that accommodated both the State’s objectives and the community’s expectations.

The outcome was not just successful distribution but restored alignment.

That pattern of stepping back, reassessing, and returning with a better approach reflects a deeper instinct.

An instinct to understand before acting

Over the years, this has also shaped a particular style of leadership.

One that does not remain distant from the work.

But one that shows up.

On the ground.

Across communities.

In real conditions.

It is estimated that over the past two decades, he has traversed over 75% of Oyo State, engaging with farmers through programmes involving his work at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) across Africa, Oyo State N-CARES and Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (LPRES), engaging directly with people, systems and realities beyond the capital.

There is also a recognition that opportunity, when given, must be fully utilised.

The platform provided through the leadership of His Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde, created room to apply years of learning across different contexts.

And in that space, the work has reflected a consistent pattern of structure, engagement and execution.

Seen together, these experiences form something deeper than a résumé.

They reveal a process.

A gradual shaping of perspective… built through responsibility, experience, failure, mentorship and practice.

It is from this foundation that the work seen today emerges.

The result of years of preparation, often outside public view.

And perhaps that is the point.

Before systems are built… something else is built first.

Resilience.

Judgement.

Perspective.

Because in the end, systems are not just designed.

They are shaped by the experiences of the people who build them.

The Oyo State Head of Service, mrs Olubunmi Oni, has praised Governor Seyi Makinde for introducing a welfare package aimed at cushioning the impact of the ongoing fuel price hike on civil servants in the state.

In a statement issued in Ibadan, Mrs. Oni urged civil and public servants across Oyo State to reciprocate the government’s gesture by redoubling their efforts and maintaining efficiency in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

She emphasized that the governor’s initiative reflects his recognition of the dedication and hard work of the state workforce.

Mrs. Oni noted that Governor Makinde has great empathy towards the civil and public service  and had demonstrated it through his  proactive leadership by approving the payment of March salaries before the 25th of the month to  enable workers to prepare for the Sallah celebrations without financial strain.

She added further that the governor approved a flat-rate support payment of ₦10,000 for all civil servants, regardless of grade level, including permanent secretaries, even before any formal request was made.

Oyo Strengthens School Safety, Partners Security Agencies to Combat Violence

The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding students’ lives through the establishment of a “Safe School Committee” and sustained collaboration with relevant security agencies to curb violence in schools.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, made this known while receiving the Safe School Civil Defence Team in his office on Monday, March 23, 2026.

Hon. Olayiwola emphasized that children are invaluable assets whose physical and mental well-being must be protected, particularly within the school environment. He stressed that schools should remain safe spaces for learning, free from all forms of violence.

The Commissioner also expressed concern over the declining level of parental involvement in children’s upbringing. He noted that many parents fail to monitor their wards’ academic activities, attendance, or performance, often leaving the responsibilities of discipline and moral guidance solely to teachers who interact with the students for only a limited number of hours each day.

Speaking earlier, the Team Leader of the Safe School Civil Defence Corps, Ogunyinka Micheal Rotimi, said the visit was aimed at strengthening the existing collaboration between the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the State Ministry of Education.

He explained that the Safe School Team has been actively organizing security awareness programmes for students, as well as teaching and non-teaching staff, to reduce threats and violence within schools.

However, he called for increased government support and collaboration to enhance their effectiveness.

Ogunyinka further appealed for assistance in domesticating the “National Safety Response Center” in Oyo State. According to him, the initiative would enable a coordinated and rapid response to security threats through the collaboration of multiple security agencies. He added that dedicated emergency response lines would be established, alongside regular engagements with school principals and key education stakeholders, especially in high-risk areas.

5 OYRTMA Officials Injured, Vehicles Damaged in Soka Junction Clash Over QR Jacket Enforcement

Five officials of the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority (OYRTMA) were injured, while several operational vehicles were damaged, following a violent clash that erupted at Soka Junction in Ibadan during the enforcement of the state’s QR-coded jacket policy on commercial motorcyclists.

The confrontation, which reportedly involved aggrieved riders, disrupted traffic flow in the area and raised fresh concerns over resistance to the ongoing regulatory exercise.

The enforcement team, set up by the Executive Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), had earlier commenced operations in the early hours of the day, departing the agency’s administrative headquarters at about 8:15 a.m. for the Olodo axis.

During the initial phase of the exercise, several non-compliant okada riders were apprehended, while compliance checks were successfully carried out in the Orita-Aperin and Olomi areas.

Trouble, began at about 11:10 a.m. when the team arrived at Soka Junction. Officials observed widespread non-compliance with the QR jacket directive and halted engaging riders, in a bid to  sensitize  them on the importance of the policy.

While some groups within the park responded positively to the engagement, resistance soon emerged, allegedly instigated and led by the Unit Chairman of the park. The situation quickly escalated into violence.

A group of aggrieved riders launched an attack on the officials, hurling stones and wooden planks. One officer was reportedly struck in the chest, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Personnel of the Amotekun Corps, who accompanied the team as security backup, were also attacked and temporarily disarmed.

The violent confrontation forced the enforcement team to withdraw from the scene. In the aftermath, four operational vehicles belonging to the agency were severely damaged. As of the time of filing this report, three injured personnel remained hospitalized, while others were treated for minor injuries.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of OYRTMA, Major Adesagba Adekoya (rtd), strongly condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric, unacceptable, and a direct assault on constituted authority.”

"Our officers were on lawful duty to enforce a government policy designed to ensure security, accountability, and proper regulation of commercial motorcycle operations across Oyo State.                               "It is deeply unfortunate that they were met with such violent resistance."

Adekoya further emphasized that the QR jacket initiative is aimed at improving public safety, curbing criminal activities, and creating a reliable identification system for okada riders.

“We will not be deterred by acts of violence. The enforcement will continue, and those responsible for this attack will be identified and brought to justice,” he added.

He also called on stakeholders, including transport unions and community leaders, to support the government’s efforts and educate their members on the importance of compliance.

Security agencies have reportedly been notified, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

According to him, his background as a trained computer science expert also gives him an edge in driving innovation and modern governance in the state.

Oyo Govt Issues Heatwave Alert, Urges Residents to Take Precautionary Measures

The Oyo State Government has issued an urgent Environmental health advisory following a severe heat stress alert from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), warning residents to take immediate precautions as temperatures soar to dangerous levels.

According to the Commissioner, Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, said the ongoing heatwave is not isolated to Oyo State but part of a nationwide surge in temperatures affecting several states across Nigeria.

He added that with daytime temperatures reaching as high as 41°C, there is a heightened risk of heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke, particularly during this peak dry season.

Aderinto emphasized the need for residents to remain vigilant and adopt practical safety measures to protect their health and well-being.

He urged residents to limit outdoor activities, especially between 12:00 PM and 4:00 PM when the sun is at its peak. For those who must be outdoors, staying under shade, particularly natural tree cover, was strongly recommended as an effective way to reduce heat exposure.

The Commissioner stressed that proper hydration remains critical even when they don't feel thirsty, urging residents to drink at least two to three litres of water daily and consume water-rich foods such as fruits and vegetables to help regulate body temperature.

He further encouraged the use of light, breathable clothing and protective items such as hats, umbrellas, and sunglasses. Ensuring proper ventilation in homes and workplaces, he added, is essential to reduce indoor heat buildup.

Aderinto also issued a strong warning against leaving children, elderly people, or pets inside parked vehicles, noting that temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly to fatal levels within minutes.

Residents are encouraged to watch for early signs of heat stress, including dizziness, fatigue, and convulsions, Nausea and to check on vulnerable neighbours who may require assistance.

Beyond immediate safety measures, the Commissioner highlighted the broader environmental implications of the heatwave, urging citizens to protect existing green spaces and actively participate in tree-planting initiatives to mitigate long-term heat effects.

He reassured the public of the government’s continued commitment to safeguarding lives and property and pledged to provide timely updates as weather conditions evolve.

The System Builder: The Work Behind the Name

By Biodun Awolaja

In recent weeks, the name, Dr Debo Akande, has begun to feature more prominently in conversations across Oyo State.

For many, the question has been simple: Who is he?

But perhaps the more useful question is different:

What has he built?

Across different sectors, one pattern becomes clear:

Not programmes.

Not projects.

But systems.

In agribusiness, that system is visible through the work of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), where initiatives such as the Youth Entrepreneurship in Agribusiness Project (YEAP) and YEAP-SAfER have moved beyond training into structured enterprise development.

More than 5,000 young people have been trained.

Over 1,000 enterprises are active.

Across value chains, businesses are emerging with the capacity to grow, scale and create jobs.

At the centre of this is design.

A system that connects:

training

enterprise development

access to finance

and long-term support

But agribusiness is only one part of the picture.

As Executive Adviser on International Cooperation Development, Dr Akande has played a central role in positioning Oyo State within global investment conversations.

Over the past several years, these efforts have contributed to attracting over $280 million in investment interest and commitments, alongside the establishment of 22 new agribusinesses and factories within the State.

Today, Oyo State ranks second in VAT remittance in Nigeria, reflecting a broader expansion of economic activities.

These outcomes are not the result of isolated engagements… but of sustained relationship-building, negotiation, and the structured positioning of Oyo State as a credible investment destination.

At the Oyo State Agribusiness Transformation Centre, Fasola, this approach becomes tangible.

What began as a concept has evolved into a functioning hub with production and processing facilities, supporting enterprise development and demonstrating what coordinated investment in agribusiness can achieve.

It is not simply infrastructure… it is a platform.

The same pattern appears in other sectors.

In healthcare, Oyo State secured a €58 million French-supported facility to support equipping of the primary and secondary health care, sustained engagement and positioning. The State was selected ahead of others through a process grounded in credibility and structured advocacy.

In ICT, a $1 million ICT Youth business incubation facility in Oyo State further reflects this same approach… where opportunity is not assumed, but deliberately secured.

Even at the level of international engagement, the signals are clear.

The visit of the President of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Julius Maada Bio, to Fasola marked a historic moment… the first time a sitting President has visited a sub-national state in Nigeria in this manner.

It was not just a visit.

It was recognition.

Across these examples, a consistent approach emerges:

build structure before scale

establish credibility before expansion

connect systems before outcomes

This is what defines a system builder.

Someone who understands that sustainable progress does not come from isolated interventions… but from creating frameworks that continue to function, adapt and grow over time.

As conversations evolve and attention increases, it is natural that individuals come into focus.

But the clearer picture is this:

Before the conversations… there has been a pattern of work.

Work that reflects:

discipline

coordination

and a long-term view of development

There is still more to be done.

The opportunity ahead is not simply to continue what exists, but to deepen systems, expand access, and ensure that growth becomes both scalable and sustainable across sectors.

And in that work lies the real question.

Not who Dr Debo Akande is…

But what he represents.

A continuation of a journey that has moved from vision to engineering, and now, increasingly, to systems.

And in that pattern of work lies a quiet but compelling argument for what leadership can look like.

Akeem Abas: 100 Days of Vision, Impact and Reform in Oyo NUJ – By Temidayo Adu

The emergence of Akeem Babatunde Abas as Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, marked the beginning of a new era defined by vision, inclusiveness, and purposeful leadership.

Members and stakeholders of the council spoke with one voice during the election, entrusting Abas with the responsibility to pilot the affairs of the union alongside a team of committed executives.

Popularly known as ALAKIME, Abas is a Bloomberg scholar and a seasoned editor with the News Agency of Nigeria, bringing to the office a wealth of professional experience and global exposure.

From the moment he was inaugurated, Abas demonstrated readiness for leadership, hitting the ground running with remarkable energy, focus, and a clear sense of direction.

His administration immediately began to reflect a deep commitment to fulfilling campaign promises and meeting the high expectations of journalists across Oyo State.

One of his earliest interventions was the comprehensive cleanup of the NUJ Press Centre, restoring order and dignity to the environment.

At his first Congress held on January 10, 2026, the Chairman took a bold step by reinstating all deregistered chapels affected during the electioneering period.

This move restored the number of chapels in the council to eighteen and reinforced unity within the union, while also setting the stage for an aggressive membership drive.

To improve communication and coordination during congresses and official engagements, the administration procured and installed a modern Public Address (P.A) system, which end years of reliance on rented equipment.

The earliest highlight of his administration was the organisation of a colourful and spiritually uplifting Christmas Carol on December 23, 2025.

This was followed by the distribution of a multimillion-naira rice package to members, an unprecedented welfare initiative in the recent history of the council.

Demonstrating administrative foresight, Abas terminated the contract arrangement on the NUJ Guest House to ensure transparency and accountability.

In its place, he constituted a five-man Press Centre Management Committee, duly approved by Congress, to oversee operations and properly document tenancy arrangements.

To enhance the living conditions of staff at the Press Centre and promote a more positive work ethic, Abas approved a salary increase, with the least-paid staff now earning a minimum of ₦70,000.

Infrastructure development has also received significant attention under his leadership, reflecting a commitment to improving the working environment of members.

The repair of the 40KVA generator donated by Engr. Femi Babalola (Jogor) restored stable power supply to the Press Centre.

Complementing this effort is the ongoing construction of a permanent generator house, strategically positioned to enhance security and ensure sustainability.

In tackling electricity challenges, Abas initiated engagement with the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to address the burden of estimated billing.

This proactive move has already yielded results, with the approval of seven prepaid meters to be installed across the Press Centre.

Beyond infrastructure, the administration has prioritised unity and morale among members through thoughtful initiatives.

One such initiative is the introduction of customised graphic designs to celebrate members on their birthdays, strengthening interpersonal bonds within the union.

Capacity building has remained a cornerstone of Abas’ leadership philosophy since assumption of office.

His ambitious promise to train 300 journalists within three years is already nearing fulfillment, with about 250 journalists trained within just two months.

The January and February training series focused on artificial intelligence and life skills, equipping journalists with modern tools for improved performance and relevance.

These training programmes were facilitated through strategic partnerships with institutions such as the American Open University and Google Africa.

Plans for subsequent training sessions in March and April have already been concluded, ensuring continuity in professional development.

Abas’ leadership style, which is both hands-on and people-oriented, has consistently reflected a genuine passion for members’ welfare.

In the area of institutional collaboration, Abas facilitated a partnership between the NUJ and Ajayi Crowther University.

The collaboration focuses on practical media training for students, bridging the gap between classroom learning and real-world journalism practice. Under this arrangement, 300-level and final-year students are exposed to newsroom operations and field reporting, enhancing their professional readiness.

Efforts to reclaim and revitalise the Press Centre have also seen the restoration of identities of key facilities named after past leaders. This initiative preserves institutional memory while restoring pride in the council’s heritage.

Demonstrating foresight in asset management, Abas secured a lease agreement with Womai City for the development of a five-star hotel. The project, located behind the Dapo Aderogba Hall, operates under a Build-Operate-Transfer arrangement and is expected to boost the council’s revenue base.

In line with his welfarist approach, the Chairman also distributed Ramadan packages to members, including rice and milk, to support them during the fasting period.

Further strengthening the union’s institutional relevance, Abas reclaimed the slot for the production of the state government’s commemorative magazine. This opportunity, previously lost for over six years, has now been revived under the NUJ.

To effectively manage this, the council established an official publication titled 'Leadership Focus'.

As his administration marks its first 100 days, the achievements recorded so far clearly reflect a leadership driven by vision, action, and measurable impact.

Abas has not only set a new standard for leadership within the NUJ Oyo State Council but has also repositioned the union for greater relevance and sustainability.

The journey ahead may still be long, but the foundation laid within this short period provides strong assurance of even greater accomplishments.

Akeem Abas: 100 Days of Purposeful Leadership as Chairman, NUJ Oyo State Council

The emergence of Mr. Akeem Abas as Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, following the election held on December 9, 2025, marked the beginning of a new era of purposeful and people-oriented leadership.

The election, widely adjudged to be free, fair, and transparent, saw him defeat his opponents convincingly, thereby earning the mandate to lead the Council.

From the outset, he alongside the  executive members, wasted no time in setting the tone for impactful governance. Despite assuming office with virtually no financial backing, the administration successfully organized its maiden Christmas Carol Service and distributed bags of rice worth millions of naira to members across various chapels of the Union—demonstrating an early commitment to members’ welfare.

During his campaign, the Chairman had pledged to train over 300 journalists within his three-year tenure. Remarkably, within just 100 days in office, he has facilitated the training of about 240 journalists in Artificial Intelligence (AI), a forward-looking initiative aimed at equipping members with modern media skills and enhancing professional capacity.

Addressing infrastructural challenges at the NUJ Press Centre in Ibadan, particularly the epileptic power supply, the leadership undertook the repair of the 40KVA Mikano generator at a cost of about half a million naira. This intervention has significantly improved alternative power supply to the facility.

The administration also confronted structural issues within the Council. Prior to the election, the number of chapels had been reduced from eighteen to eleven. At a Congress held on January 10, 2026, he highlighted the negative implications of this reduction and sought the support of members for the reinstatement of the affected chapels. The motion, moved by Chief Bola Ogunlayi of the Correspondents’ Chapel and seconded by Mrs. Eniola Adeaga of the BCOS Chapel, received overwhelming support.

To effectively drive his administration’s agenda which centere on welfare, professional development, discipline, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, the Chairman constituted both standing and ad-hoc committees. These include the Press Centre Management Committee, Ethics and Disciplinary Committee, Training and Capacity Building Committee, and Project Execution Committee, among others.

In a bid to ensure financial sustainability and reduce overdependence on external funding, the leadership has taken proactive steps toward revenue generation. Notably, efforts are underway to expand the 18-room Guest House, while an agreement has been successfully signed for the lease of a parcel of land behind Dapo Aderogba Hall within the Press Centre to a reputable developer.

Under Mr. Abas’ leadership, the NUJ Oyo State Council has continued to strengthen its relationship with affiliate bodies such as the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) and the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN). The Council played a pivotal role in the successful hosting of the NAWOJ Zonal Executive Committee Meeting held in Ibadan between February 11 and 13, 2026.

To improve communication and coordination during congresses and official engagements, the administration procured and installed a modern Public Address System which puts an end to years of reliance on rented equipment.

Demonstrating inclusivity and religious tolerance,  Chairman ensured the distribution of food items and provisions to members during the periods of Ramadan and Lent, thereby supporting adherents of both Islam and Christianity.

In recognition of the contributions of past leaders, Mr. Abas has also restored their names to key structures within the Press Centre, preserving their legacies. These include Gbenga Opadotun Building, Dapo Aderogba Hall, Alhaji Adewole Soladoye Building, and Seinde Dagunduro Building.

On staff welfare, the administration has aligned with the national minimum wage standard by increasing the salaries of Press Centre staff, ensuring that no worker earns below ₦70,000.

Additionally, the Council has introduced an official publication titled “Leadership Focus,” with its maiden edition set for release soon.

The magazine is expected to serve as a platform for professional engagement, policy discourse, and visibility for the Union.

Mr. Akeem Abas has continued to demonstrate exemplary leadership qualities marked by generosity, humility, inclusiveness, and a strong commitment to service. He carries his executive members along in decision-making processes and consistently seeks guidance from elders and stakeholders within the Council.

As he marks his first 100 days in office, his achievements reflect a leader driven by vision, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility. It is the collective hope of members that he will continue to be divinely strengthened, guided, and endowed with the wisdom and good health required to fulfill all his promises.

Oyo Govt. Alerts Residents, Farmers on 2026 Weather Outlook, Flood Prevention

The Oyo State Government has advised residents and farmers across the state to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to government advisories to  prevent flooding and safeguarding lives and property as the rainy season approaches.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Engr. Ademola Aderinto, and made available to the media on Monday, he said that the state government will continue to put proactive measures in place to prevent flooding and mitigate its impact across the state.

According to him,  the government is working closely with the Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and utilising flood early warning systems installed through the World Bank-supported Ibadan Urban Flood Management Project to alert residents several days ahead of possible flooding.

He added that the Ministry has intensified the clearing of waterways, drainage channels and rivers across the state to remove debris and other obstructions that could hinder the free flow of water, noting that the exercise commenced during the dry season and will continue until the rains set in.

Hon. Aderinto explained that since the administration of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, the state has consistently implemented preventive environmental measures which have helped reduce the incidence of severe flooding in recent years.

The Commissioner also advised residents living along riverbanks, waterways and other flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations ahead of the rainy season in order to avoid putting their lives and property at risk.

While addressing farmers, Hon. Aderinto revealed that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted that rainfall may occur almost throughout the year, though with intermittent dry spells, noting that the changing climate pattern may affect planting cycles and crop production.

He cautioned farmers against rushing to plant during early rainfall which may not be sustained, advising them to wait for official guidance from government and relevant agencies before commencing planting activities.

He therefore admonished residents to remain cooperative, stay informed through official channels, and report any illegal developments or obstructions along waterways, reaffirming its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state
