Oyo Eyes ₦100bn IGR as Makinde’s Reforms Lift Economy, Education, Health

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, has confirmed the report that since last year Oyo State has been the best place to live in Nigeria based on quality of life, functional infrastructure, service delivery and security.

The Commissioner was reacting to a report by the State Performance Index (pSPI), handled by a consultancy firm.

He said, “Obviously, the State’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which has improved dramatically in the past few years, is being put to good and productive use for the benefit of the citizenry. While the past administration struggled to reach the ₦15 billion mark annually, the Seyi Makinde administration has increased IGR to ₦65 billion in 2024, and as at July this year, it has increased to ₦58 billion  just ₦7 billion short of the 2024 total revenue gathered.”

The Commissioner said the implication of these figures is that Oyo State will beat its own record by the end of this year with a target close to ₦100 billion, making it sit comfortably as a leading financial hub in the country.

The Commissioner said that unlike most sub-nationals and past administrations in Oyo State, IGR collection has been seamless and has not increased the burden on investors. Rather, it has opened up the economy through agribusiness, infrastructure and tourism. This expansion of the economy, coupled with the ripple effect of consistent payment of ₦14 5billion to over 130,000 workers monthly, has had a salutary effect on the increasing IGR of the state. The Commissioner revealed that this month of September ₦15.4 billion was paid as salaries instead of the usual ₦14.5 billion.

Another area of concentration of this administration is healthcare. According to the Commissioner, 264 primary healthcare centres have been upgraded and over 3,900 professionals recruited, which has significantly restored the healthcare system.

The Commissioner recalled that during a courtesy call at the Governor's Office two weeks ago, the UNICEF Country Representative, Celine Lafocriere, said that UNICEF has had more engagements with Oyo State than any other state in Nigeria in the past two years.

On education, Prince Oyelade said that the staff strength in the primary schools has increased by 100 per cent from 13,730 in 2019 to 26,436 in 2025, and over 10,500 teaching and non-teaching staff have been employed to improve academic performance and living standards of youths.

The Commissioner stated further that Governor Makinde's reforms in education have led to the construction of 60 model schools, 289 new classroom blocks, renovation of 229 others and reintegration of over 60,000 out of school children.

Additionally, four new educational zones have been created, including administrative structures, while 2,000 teachers have been absorbed into TESCOM to further strengthen efficiency.

VIDEO: Makinde’s developmental strides, not at people’s expense – Jamiu, Ogbomoso Parapo chairman

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has been described as a leader who does not pursue development at the expense of the people.

Alhaji Iliasu Jamiu, Chairman of Ogbomoso Parapo (Home), said this during an interview with The People’s Verdict.

According to him, Makinde is a very compassionate leader who wants the progress, development as well as the economic expansion of the state and works towards the realization of these without subjecting the people of the state to hardship or jeopardizing their wellbeing.

“That is all we really need in leadership and this position is supported by the Holy Qur’an.”

Alhaji Jamiu, who described the Makinde administration as people-centric, added that the governor has brought comfort to the people of Oyo State.

According to the community leader, the Makinde administration has birthed peace and progress in the state.

His words: “Since the governor’s assumption of office, the education sector has improved. There is stability in the sector now unlike the situation before his coming when schools always shut down because of the industrial actions embarked upon by teaching and non-teaching staff.”

Alhaji Jamiu, while lauding Governor Makinde for resolving the impasse that turned Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, into an institution that was perpetually under lock and key, said the governor thought out of the box to restore the school’s glory and rescue the students from the frustration occasioned by strike actions which extended their stay on campus.

The Ogbomoso Parapo chairman also praised Governor Makinde for his intervention in the health sector, adding that the administration recently recruited personnel to improve health service delivery in all parts of the state.

On the administration’s support to farmers, Alhaji Jamiu said, “The government supports farmers with money, seedlings and chemicals which have contributed in no small measure to boosting food production in the state.”

Speaking on some of the benefits derived by the Ogbomoso people from the Makinde administration, the Ogbomoso Parapo (Home) Chairman said apart from the 76.67km Iseyin-Fapote-Ogbomoso Road (known as Adebayo Alao-Akala Highway), the administration also constructed the Under G-LAUTECH Road, among others.

He added, “The government has also ensured the security of the people by providing us with Amotekun Corps. When we (Ogbomoso Parapo) were building the Amotekun Security Post, the government supported us. With that, there is peace and security in Ogbomoso. Security is critical to development and the wellbeing of any society. Because there is security in Ogbomoso, the people live in peace and we are recording steady progress.”

Alhaji Jamiu similarly applauded Governor Makinde for creating employment opportunities for the people of Oyo state.

His words: “The government has employed many people. Going by what we heard, there is no government agency into which people have not been recruited; the education sector, health, civil service. This administration has tried to touch every sector and that is okay.”

Oyo PDP Congress will Re -position Party - MHR, Odidiomo

The member representing Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West federal constituency of Oyo state in the House of Representatives, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, has declared that the ongoing congresses of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) across the country signify a fresh beginning that will reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking with journalists in Ibadan at the Oyo State PDP congress, held at the basketball court of Lekan Salami stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, Olajide described the exercise as “the birth of a new PDP,” stressing that the reforms being witnessed across the 33 state chapters of the PDP across Nigeria are signs of laying a solid foundation for a stronger and more united political family. He noted that despite the turbulence of recent years, the PDP had weathered the storm and was poised to reclaim its pride of place in Nigeria's national politics.

According to him, the party remains the most experienced political organisation in Nigeria, having mastered the democratic process over the years. He emphasised that PDP had learnt from its past and was now embracing a new era of stability and inclusiveness. “PDP is not a rookie party. We have been in this process longer than any other political party. Politics is our business, we have learnt it, we have mastered it. Gone are the days when violence was the order of the day. This is a new dawn for Nigeria,” he said.

Olajide likened the rebuilding process of the PDP to the birth of a new baby, insisting that by November, after the party’s national convention, Nigerians would witness a fully repositioned PDP ready to drive fresh ideas and initiatives for the nation. “PDP is the right movement, the right platform and the right form of energy for anyone who truly wants to move this nation forward. With leaders like Governor Seyi Makinde and others providing direction, the best is yet to come,” he declared.

Speaking on reconciliation efforts within the party, the federal lawmaker dismissed fears that the congresses might alienate some leaders, describing such concerns as exaggerated. He maintained that politics is a game of alignment and re-alignment, stressing that dissenting voices would eventually key into the new momentum sweeping across the PDP. “Politics is like a moving train, when it is slow, you can hop on easily, but when it gains speed, you risk being left behind. Some of those you describe as aggrieved will eventually come on board.”

“There was a time it was very frustrating, when we could not even see light at the end of the tunnel. But gradually, things began to turn around. Now momentum is gathering, not only in Oyo, but also in Lagos, Ondo, the North and across Nigeria. The positive energy we are witnessing shows that good things are about to happen,”

He called on party faithfuls nationwide to remain steadfast, united and hopeful as the PDP marches towards its national convention and assured that the outcome of the exercise will herald a new dawn for Nigeria’s political landscape, adding that the party was ready to provide the kind of leadership Nigerians desire as the country prepares for another electoral cycle.

Oyo, UNICEF Partner To End Open Defecation By 2028, Strengthen WASH Services

The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening policies, institutional frameworks, and capacity building to accelerate access to inclusive and sustainable Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) services across the state.

This commitment was renewed at a one-day roundtable on the Oyo State Open Defecation Free (ODF) and WASH Campaign, organized by the Oyo State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) in partnership with UNICEF, held at the Ibadan Business School, Old Bodija, Ibadan.

Speaking at the event, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni (mni), represented by Mrs. Adebukola Akinwale, stressed that access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene is not just a social service but a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of sustainable development.

“The health, dignity, and productivity of our people are directly linked to the availability and sustainability of WASH services. It is our collective responsibility; government, development partners, private sector, civil society, and communities to build an inclusive system that leaves no one behind,” she said.

On her part, UNICEF WASH Manager, Abuja, Mrs. Jolly Ann Maulit, presented a paper on “Unlocking the Potential of the Sanitation Economy.” She emphasized the importance of private sector partnerships in bridging the huge sanitation financing gap in Nigeria, highlighting opportunities in the toilet economy, circular sanitation economy (recycling waste into biogas, fertilizer, and clean water), and smart sanitation economy (technology-driven sanitation services).

Chairman of RUWASSA, Alhaji Babalola Afobaje, raised concern over the high rate of open defecation in Oyo State, noting that according to the 2021 WASHNORM report, 53.7% of the state’s population still engage in open defecation while only 29.2% have access to basic sanitation services. He described the practice as a public health crisis driving recurring outbreaks of cholera, diarrhoea, and typhoid, particularly among children.

He, however, reaffirmed that Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration, in partnership with UNICEF, is determined to eliminate open defecation in all 33 LGAs of Oyo State by 2028. He also listed ongoing interventions, including the rehabilitation and drilling of boreholes, construction of solar-powered water facilities, and provision of sanitation facilities in public institutions across the state.

Other speakers, including UNICEF WASH Specialist, Lagos Field Office, Mr. Monday Johnson, and Sanitation Marketing Facilitator, Mr. Abdulsalam M.A, urged private sector actors, financial institutions, and NGOs to play active roles in scaling up sanitation solutions, stressing that Oyo cannot achieve its ODF target without their involvement.

The roundtable ended with a strong call to action for all stakeholders to work together in building a healthier, safer, and cleaner Oyo State where every household has access to clean water, safe sanitation, and good hygiene practices by 2028.
