When tension thawed at Makinde’s interface with Circular Road stakeholders

By Aisha Alimi

The atmosphere was tense. Angry-looking residents carrying banners with inscriptions such as “No Corridor”, “We want development but not the Corridor”, and “Don’t render us homeless” formed a defence line facing the section from which they expected the governor to address them. Government officials settled into their seats ahead of his arrival, as journalists milled around, their conversations hushed.

The programme anchor did his best to calm what he perceived as frayed nerves, encouraging the people to be optimistic in their expectations. The governor was on his way, and soon their concerns would be heard.

And then the moment came. Perhaps the first move that showed that His Excellency, Seyi Makinde, had read the room and understood the assignment was his decision to drive himself to the meeting ground — a simple act that drew cheers as he stepped out of the vehicle and took his seat.

Six people spoke, representing the residents. They shared their fears and their requests. They wanted the governor to show empathy and compassion. They also distanced themselves from the “akara-frying” protesters who had made the rounds on social media, clarifying that their demand was not to halt development but to reduce the corridor width from 500 metres on each side to 60 metres altogether — just enough to accommodate the road itself. They further requested fair compensation and alignment among government ministries to stop instances of intimidation.

When it was time for him to speak, Governor Makinde took the conversation directly to the people. Leaving his seat, he walked into their midst and addressed them.

Their requests were a tough sell. The governor explained that the entire Circular Road project hinged on the development of a corridor. He noted that the need for a setback was statutory — in some cases up to 50 metres on both sides — hence the requirement for a 150-metre allowance on each side. He then spoke on shifts the government was ready to make assuring the people that he was on their side.

Although the people did not receive the land concessions they sought, they left the meeting with a significant policy shift. The Oyo State New Towns and Cities Development Agency would henceforth serve as the single point of engagement between the government and residents on the Circular Road project — a move that ends previous cases of overlapping directives and intimidation by multiple ministries.

The governor also assured that no further demolitions would occur without prior payment of compensation, adding that any previously unfair cases would be reviewed.

By the time the governor was leaving the venue, tensions had eased. He led the Mogajis who had been part of the discussions to the Circular Road itself, stopping at several points along the route to show his deep understanding of the project and his personal commitment to its delivery.

He drove from the Tech-U end of the road — the main entry point — through to the second segment, stopping only when ongoing construction made it impossible to continue. Later that evening, he returned to his residence, met with state officials, and issued final directives.

It was, in every sense, a day that bridged protest and progress. As dusk fell on the day’s events, the tension that had greeted the governor’s arrival had given way to cautious optimism. With clear assurances and a more structured line of engagement, the people left with renewed confidence that their voices had been heard. For many, this meeting marked not just a turning point in the Circular Road project but the beginning of a shared journey towards the investments and opportunities that the corridor will bring to Oyo State.

Alakime, a Bloomberg scholar and Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) made the pledge while addressing members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ in Ibadan.

Oyo explores Boom Amid cocoa production decline

....as council  backs south west Governors on state police

The Oyo State Government is set to restore the glory of cocoa production as one of the state’s major economic pillars.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the State Executive Council approved the sum of  Three Billion, Thirty Million, Two Hundred and Ninety-Two Thousand, Four Hundred and Seventy-Two Naira (₦3,030,292,472) for the establishment of Cocoa Rejuvenation Project.

The project, which will be driven through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), will be coordinated by the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

The Commissioner explained that the state government is taking this initiative because Oyo State ranks fourth in cocoa production among the 18 cocoa-producing states in Nigeria.

He said, "The state is also being proactive by seizing the opportunity created by disruptions in cocoa production in major producing countries like Ghana and Côte d’Ivoire."

"It is the intention of Oyo State to fill the supply void as a result of the production problems facing the West African countries."

"The Cocoa Rejuvenation Project, which costs  two million, seventy-five thousand, five hundred and forty-seven dollars ($2,075,547), will be funded in three tranches over the next three years."

The Council  also backs the call by South West Governors on their call for State Police and observed that the lack of enthusiasm by our youths to join the military makes the domestication of local policing more urgent.

The Council lauded the foresight of Governor Seyi Makinde to procure two Surveillance Aircrafts for the State security apparatus to track and monitor movements in dangerous areas and the continued support for Amotekun that has made it the best staffed and equipped in the South West.

Additionally, the Council approved  Fifty Million Euros  (€50 million) for the Oyo State Health Care Initiative. This loan from the French Government, which Oyo State initiated about three years ago, was finally approved by the Federal Ministry of Finance in a letter dated November 10, 2025.

He explained that the loan, intended for infrastructural upgrades and equipping state hospitals, among other purposes, has also been approved by the State House of Assembly to enable the state government to access the funds.

Prince Oyelade said that  the Oyo State Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy was also approved by the council.

This approval according to him will unlock financial opportunities and allow the state to access funds from the Federal Government, the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and other international partners.  He added that the objective of the fund is to eliminate open defecation, achieve universal access to safely managed sanitation, and integrate hygiene promotion into communities.

The Commissioner said that the Council at its meeting on Tuesday also approved the establishment of the Oyo State Climate Action Plans and Policies, which will allow for the engagement of a Green Energy Agency.

He said that the  approval authorizes the engagement of a Green Energy Agency to implement the policies, backed by a  Two Hundred and Seventy Million Naira  (₦270 Million) guarantee from a reputable bank.

The Council further approved the Business Enabling Reforms Action Plan for 2026, a mandatory requirement for state participation in the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER).

Prince Oyelade  said that  to meet the eligibility criteria, the council approved the sum of ₦400 million (four hundred million naira) as the cost of implementation.

I Wasn't Trained to Blackmail”: Akeem Abas Outlines Vision for Oyo NUJ

NUJ Chairmanship Aspirant, Akeem Abas, Declares Stand Against Blackmail, Propaganda

Chairmanship aspirant in the forthcoming election into the Oyo state council of Nigeria Union of journalists, Akeem Abas popularly known as Alakime, has emphasized that his work as a journalist is rooted in societal development rather than blackmail or propaganda.

He made the remark while addressing members of the State Information Chapel.

Abas, who leads the Great Minds Team, said journalism must remain a tool for advancing public interest. He stressed that the profession was never designed to fuel crises or spread misinformation.

Speaking during his visit to solicit support ahead of the December 9 NUJ election, Abas highlighted the need to correct negative perceptions about journalists. He noted that some members of the public wrongly view practitioners as blackmailers or propagandists.

According to him, journalism is built on professionalism, accuracy and ethical standards. He added that his leadership would prioritize strengthening these values within the union.

Abas stated that continuous training and development remain central to restoring confidence in the profession, stressing that journalists must be empowered with modern skills to meet global standards.

The chairmanship aspirant pledged that, if elected, his administration would train and retrain at least 300 journalists within three years. He described this as essential for improving competence across the state.

Abas, a Bloomberg scholar and Editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), also unveiled plans to launch a food bank initiative. The programme, he explained, would help ease economic hardship among union members.

Through the food bank, members would have access to essential food items at subsidized prices. Abas said this intervention would support journalists facing rising living costs and discourage brown envelope syndrome among journalists.

He further disclosed his intention to establish an Elders Advisory Council for the union. The council, he noted, would provide guidance, strengthen institutional memory and enhance programme execution.

Abas called on journalists across the state to support his vision for a more ethical, empowered and welfare-driven NUJ. He reaffirmed that his commitment remains centered on service, integrity and the advancement of the profession.

In his remark, the permanent secretary, Oyo State Ministry of Information, Mr Rotimi Babalola commended Alakime for unveiling a workable manifesto for the development of NUJ in Oyo state.

Mr Babalola, charged Akeem Abas to prioritize training of journalists when elected as the chairman of the council.

Oyo CPS UPDATE; I will score Makinde distinction, says Nigerian Economic Society President, Adenikinju

President of the Nigerian Economic Society, Professor Adeola Adenikinju, has said that given the accomplishments of Governor Seyi Makinde in Oyo State over the past 80 months, he will score him a distinction.

Professor Adenikinju said this during an interview with The People’s Verdict.

His words: “I will give the governor a distinction, and. He has done well. He can do more, but he has done relatively well.”

He added, “I will say he is a performer. He doesn’t talk too much, but he performs.”

Substantiating his verdict, Adenikinju lauded the governor’s efforts in improving the state of infrastructure in the state.

He said, “The governor deserves a lot of kudos. Nigeria has gone through a lot of challenges which affected the economies of many parts of the world. If you look at the national statistics, at some point, government revenue actually declined because of revenue challenges. But in the midst of all of that, in Oyo State you see a lot of infrastructural development; you see a lot of investment flowing in. So, I think the governor is on the right track.

“Most states in Nigeria are dependent on FAAC, what comes from the federal government. And in situations where there are challenges that affect federal government revenue, that will also have impact on what the state has. But like I said, if you look at Oyo State, the state has been able to do quite well under Governor Makinde. As an economist, I know that infrastructure plays a significant role in economic growth. With what he is also doing in the area of energy, I know that very soon Oyo State will be able to boast of a good supply of electricity, which will further enhance economic growth.”

According to the University of Ibadan Economics professor, Oyo State has been attracting a lot of investments.

He said, “If you drive around Ibadan, you will see a lot of activities, even at night. You will see a number of economic activities being driven by new investments.

The state government is doing its own investments, the private sector is also doing its own investment. So, when you combine the two, I think Oyo State is doing quite well.”

While praising the Oyo State Government’s employment generation efforts, Adenikinju said, “One of the areas that one should give kudos to the governor for is in the area of timely payment of salaries.

When you employ more hands, when you pay people and you do not owe contractors, you are boosting their purchasing power. Employing more people is a good decision. It will also reduce

unemployment, which we know is a major challenge in the country now. That will also reduce poverty because when you get income, it enhances your purchasing power and that would also have an impact on poverty. Remember that those who are employed now will support those who are not employed. So, employing the people has direct and indirect impact on the people.”

The NES president equally lauded Governor Makinde’s strategy of not raising tax rates in the state but widening the tax net, saying it is the best vis-à-vis the nation’s current economic situation.

“Tax is compulsory. So, even before you get your salary, the tax has been deducted. If the governor has been able to keep taxes at the same level over the years, that means that as people’s income increases, their purchasing power also increases and that will have a positive impact on economic activities. It is better to expand the tax base than increasing the tax rate. Tax base means that you bring more people, potential taxpayers who are currently not paying, into the tax net. So, you create incentives to formalize the informal sector and bring in to the tax net those who are not paying tax. So, you increase your tax revenue without necessarily increasing your tax rate. Given the economic situation in Nigeria today, a lot of people are of the opinion that this is not the time to increase tax rates, but to create incentives to widen the tax net. I guess that is what the governor is doing.”

David Mark, Aregbesola And Top ADC Leaders Unveil New Secretariat, in Abuja.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Monday inaugurated its new National Secretariat Complex in Abuja, with party leaders declaring that the 2027 general elections will mark a major turning point in Nigeria’s political future.

The ceremony brought together senior figures of the party, including the Interim National Secretary, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who hailed the new secretariat as a symbol of the ADC’s renewed direction and a launchpad for a more disciplined and visionary political movement.

Aregbesola described the facility as “a fresh dawn for the ADC,” saying it will serve as a rallying point for Nigerians seeking an alternative political culture anchored on integrity, service and national renewal.

“This secretariat is more than a building—it is the heartbeat of a new political awakening,” he said. “From here, we will coordinate a movement built on discipline, truth, responsibility and collective progress. The ADC is prepared to give Nigerians a credible, ethical and competent option in 2027.”

He stressed that the party is entering a new era where unity, strategic planning and national service will override personal interests and past divisions.

ADC National Chairman, Senator David Mark, reinforced this message, noting that the new headquarters reflects the party’s commitment to accountability, principled leadership and internal discipline.

“My message today is simple: this is not business as usual,” Mark declared. “Everything we do going forward will be anchored on character, courage, competence, discipline and integrity.”

He described the complex as the party’s strategic command centre, where ideas will be refined, strategies shaped and the next generation of leaders produced.

“Let this day mark the end of old divisions,” Mark added. “Let today symbolize the rise of a stronger, more disciplined, more visionary and more people-oriented political party with only one agenda: to serve Nigeria.”

Speaking with journalists, ADC National Publicity Secretary Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi dismissed suggestions that the relocation was influenced by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who once occupied the building. “Atiku has nothing to do with our movement here. This is solely an ADC decision,” he said.

Abdullahi announced that nationwide membership registration and validation will begin next week ahead of the party’s congresses and non-elective convention, while reaffirming that the ADC remains open to defectors from other parties who meet its ethical standards.

He also confirmed that key coalition leaders, including Nasir El-Rufai and Peter Obi, remain committed to the alliance.

Monday’s inauguration—attended by Aregbesola, potential presidential hopefuls and senior ADC leaders—marks a major milestone in the party’s expansion efforts, following similar openings in states such as Kwara. The ADC insists the new secretariat signals its readiness to contest vigorously in 2027 and reshape Nigeria’s political trajectory.
