Set Up Welfare Scheme for Media Pratitioners, Busari Urges Oyo NUJ

 

A lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication and Media Technology, Lead City University, Ibadan, Dr. Bayonle Busari has enjoined the Nigeria Union of Journalists to set up a welfare scheme that will cater for the need of indigent journalists across the country. 

Busari who doubled as Coordinator of Postgraduate Programme in the department, made this declaration while delivering a paper titled "Role of Media Practitioners in Evaluation of Fulfilment of 2023 Campaign Promises" at 2023 Press Week of Correspondents' chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council on Monday. 

Some of the personalities at the event are; National Trustee of NUJ Zone B, Mr. Adebayo Akamo, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola and Chairman of the chapel, Mr. Raji Adebayo. 

Busari while addressing the gathering said that journalists are expected to constantly put elected leaders on the stop in order to ensure that the promises made during the campaigns are fulfilled. 

He maintained that as part of their duties in the society the media practitioners have a role to set the agenda for the society in which they operate.

He added that it is the responsibility of media professionals to determine what the society discusses, how it is discussed and the effect of the discourse.

Busari who said that the media should put leaders on the spot and hold them accountable on their electioneering promises as well as the discharge of the primary responsibilities of government also urged them to shun all tendencies that will expose them to patronage from politicians, which may make them to compromise their integrity. 

The don while speaking further, lamented the condition of many journalists in the country as he maintained that many journalists are being owed salaries, the situation which is making them willing tools in the hands of politicians and political parties.

He however advised the NUJ to set up a welfare scheme from where indigent journalists can benefit. He maintained that this will help to reduce the effect of the precarious situation which some of the journalists face. 

"The relevance of the topic can be situated in the Agenda Setting Theory, which places a duty on the media to set the agenda for the society in which they operate. This means that it is the responsibility of media professionals to determine what the society discusses, how it is discussed, and the effect of the discourse.

"Secondly, the relevance of the topic comes by virtue of the role and expectation from the larger society, for the media to put leaders on the spot and hold them accountable on their electioneering promises as well as the discharge of the primary responsibilities of government. This is a duty that elected leaders owe the public. This duty, primarily, includes putting a tab on campaign promises made by politicians and the extent to which these promises are being kept. Where it is observed that politicians are deviating from the pact that they have signed with the people the media owe it as a duty to raise the red flag and call such leader to the probable failure. 

"I will call on the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to rise and take up the gauntlet by ensuring that all journalists who have been so employed are paid commensurate remuneration by their employers. This may require putting in place an appropriate legal framework to give life to this proposal. Secondly, there is a need to have an insurance scheme for journalists in order to mitigate the hardship and risk which they are prone to by the nature of their calling. 

"Finally, I will also implore the leadership of the NUJ, across board to set up a welfare scheme from where indigent journalists can benefit in order to reduce the effect of the precarious situation, which some of them face, making them willing tools in the hands of politicians and political parties.

"On a personal note, there is a need for us to shun all tendencies that will expose us to patronage from politicians, which may make us to compromise our integrity. I doubt if we have any journalist today who is not a graduate either from the university or polytechnic. This presupposes that we need to work on our self-esteem. The way politicians describe us, sometimes, behind us is better imagined! They see us as an item that can be sourced at a given prize and disposed at will. This situation is unfortunate, and should be unacceptable. We should stop making ourselves available to the political class as disposable materials.

Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Raji Adebayo in his welcome address urged politicians to fulfil their campaign promises for the people to enjoy dividends of democracy. 

"We all know that as the voice of the voiceless and watchdog for the masses, we have major tasks of  making the political office holders accountable to the  electorate. I want to use this opportunity to implore our politicians, particularly the political office holders from the local government level to the state and at the federal level to deliver on their campaign promises, because this is the only way the dividends of democracy can get to the masses". 

Use Sports To Develop Nigerian Youths, Olagoke Tells FG

Nigerian Footballers who wish to end their career as football Coaches have been advised to be abreast of international standard  to fit in any time the clarion call beacons on them while advising them to see the bigger picture and avoid the national embarrassment with none or inadequate credentials to saddle the technical requirements as a football Coach. 

The Founder  and Spiritual Head of Shafaudeen In Islam Worldwide, Alhaji Prof. Sabit Ariyo Olagoke JP stated this during the opening of Rasool Cup held at the Railway Quarters Field, Dugbe Ibadan. 

While delivering his paper tittled Train the Trainers, the sport promoter urged the Youths to use Finidi George as a case study on why no Nigerian Youth and the government must not take things for granted when it comes to youth capacity building need from amateurship to that of professional realm-grass roots and local dynamics to that of internationally promoted recognition since at this level,  our Youths or stars would be representing the interest of Nigeria, " Training the Trainer according to him is essential "

Prof. Olagoke who is also the Arole Ogun -Elu of Aare Alasa dynasty described Finidi George as a key player who rose to become the Head Coach of Enyimba FC but was denied a seat on the technical bench during CAF champions league due to lack of required CAF grade. 

Prof.  Olagoke however charged Nigerian leaders especially those saddled with Sport development at all level to invest adequately into sports so as to divert the youths from  vices in the society. 

"Sports is good for all as healthcare enhancer,  sports generally promotes unity and political relevant of every Nation ,hence the power engine,  the youth interest must be a major focus of sustainable development as defined and charged by the United Nations. In the arena of Sports promotion let us use the recent embarrassment for Nigeria as rolled out on Finidi George while representing Nigeria at the CAF championship league recently as a corrective fluid" .

The match was witnessed by members of Oyo State Football Association , president and executives of Graftadean , members of Shafaudeen In Islam Worldwide. 

Prof. Olagoke however urged Nigerian Coaches and Club owners to encourage training and retraining to ensure that Nigeria can equally nurture their ex- players to international Coach of repute. 

While speaking at the event Mr. Adeniji Adekunle donor of Kabila Cup commended Prof. Olagoke for his steadfastness, dedication and commitment to promoting football and other sports activities from the grassroots to international levels. 

"He has been contributing immensely and tirelessly his quota to the growth of the community in all senses including Sports and prayed that God will bless the Arole Ogun Elu with long life and prosperity "

LAUTECH ACADEMIC COLLABORATION COMMITTEE TEAM AND THE FACULTY OF NURSING VISIT OYSCOHEST FOR DENTAL NURSING PROGRAMME FACILITIES' ASSESSMENT, COMMENDS COLLEGE MANAGEMENT FOR MEETING REQUIRED STANDARD.

 

The combined team of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, (LAUTECH)  Ogbomoso's Academic Collaboration Committee and the Faculty of Nursing have commended the Management of Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology, Eleyele, Ibadan for meeting the required standard for collaboration between the College's Dental Nursing Department  and LAUTECH.

This was contained in a statement issued after the  assessment exercise  by the College Public Relations Officer, Mr Sola Samuel Ojewole.

The  team was led by the Dean,  Faculty of Nursing Science of the University, Professor S. O. Adeyemo. She eulogized the College Management   for providing the required facilities and equipment for the  Dental Nursing programme,  commending the sterling leadership qualities of the Provost, Mrs Oluyemisi Oyewo. 

She  also commended  the Head of Department,  Mrs Yemisi Ologunja for her selfless efforts towards ensuring the progress of the Dental Nursing Department.

She expressed optimism  that  the academic collaboration will be achieved and yield the expected results within the shortest possible time.

Welcoming the Visiting Team, the Provost, Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology,  Eleyele,  Ibadan,  Mrs Oluyemisi Oyewo commended the team for their prompt response to expedite action on the collaboration between the two academic Institutions.

She informed the team of  the upcoming National Board for Technical Education's (NBTE)  Accreditation  Team's  visit the College for the resource inspection  of six academic programmes of the College which includes  Higher National Diploma,  Dental Nursing. She thanked the Management  for their unwavering  commitment towards the advancement of the College. 

In her remarks, the Head of the  Dental Nursing Department, Mrs Yemisi Ologunja thanked the   LAUTECH Team for the academic collaboration and commended  the College Management for their support for the Department.

She equally thanked the  College Governing Council for its support in ensuring the maintenance of high academic standards of all the programmes run by the College.

The Team inspected the Dental Nursing Clinics, the Laboratories,   Demonstration room,   Staff offices and the  Lecture rooms.

Also  present  during the exercise were the  the College Librarian,  Mr Olukayode Akinsoji, the Bursar, Mrs Adeola Olanase, the Registrar, Mrs Oladupe Ayoola and the Admission Officer,  Mr Olugbenga  Makinde.

It  would be recalled that the academic collaboration process  commenced  a couple of years ago and culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding last year, between the two  Institutions owned by the Oyo State Government.

Oyo Govt Has Ended Era of Arrears of Promotion, Stagnation - Oyo HOS

The State Head of Service, Mrs Olubunmi Oni,  has said that the present administration in the State, led by the Executive Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde would end mythical era's of stagnation in career progressions and arrears of promotion suffered in the past by Civil and Public Servants in the State.

She made this known during a one day Sensitization Programme organized on Conduct of Year 2022 Promotion Exercise for Schedule Officers in all Ministries, Departments and  Agencies, organized by the State Civil Service Commission at Simon Adebo Staff Development  Center, Secretariat, Ibadan.

The Head of Service said Governor Seyi Makinde has always displayed his unrelenting affection, support to Civil and Public Servants, since the inception of his administration by clearing inherited arrears of promotion from 2017 to 2019 and the 2020 and 2021 promotions which had since been concluded. 

She reiterated that with the approval of the 2022 promotion exercise, workers in the State, would no longer have courses to wait endlessly but henceforth, it would be as at when due.

She charged the Schedule Officers across the MDA's to understand the significance of an error free implementation process, whether minor, major, overtly or covertly as this, according to  her, can  have  far- reaching effects on the affected workers.

She said "it is imperative for you to approach this exercise with utmost care, precision and adherence to the established guidelines in the personnel estimates, extant Public Service Rules and relevant Circulars.

On his part, the Executive Chairman,  Civil Service Commission, Alhaji Aderibigbe Abiodun,  lauded the Executive Governor, whom he described as a "Compassionate God sent man" for always putting smiles on the faces of every personnel, especially, by graciously giving approval for the conduct of the 2021 and 2022 promotions in quick succession, despite dwindling economic resources available to the State. 

He recalled that Engineer Makinde had earlier issued letters of promotion for 2017-2020, including the 2019-2020 concessionary promotion for Officers who could not be promoted before,and due to inadequate vacancies declared by the various Ministries,  Departments and Agencies. 

Alhaji Aderibigbe declared that the Civil Service Commission, with the approval of the Executive Governor recently released letters of conversion to about Seven Hundred Civil/Public workers to strengthen their career progressions.

He emphasized that the Commission looked forward to having an error free promotion reports from Ministries, Departments and Agencies. He however, warned Schedule Officers against delay in making available adequate vacancy provisions for eligible officers in the book of  Estimates to the Commission. 

He charged workers to vehemently support the present administration as "to whom much is given,  much is expected "

The Permanent Secretary of the Commission, Mrs Fausat Ayobami Oluokun, described the exercise as timely, and a proactive measure to forestall occurrence of errors in the implementation of the 2022 promotion,  to ensure timely release of letters to eligible workers in the State. 

She affirmed that since promotion played a significant role in work satisfaction, as it is connected to career growth, new title, changes in job responsibilities, leadership roles and pay increase. She therefore charged Schedule Officers to pay utmost attention, care and be painstaking in handling the assignments. 

Notable dignitaries, who  shared significant Goodwill messages include : Honourable Commissioner for Establishments and Training,  Honourable Adeniyi Adebisi; Special Advser to the Governor on Labour Affairs,  Comrade Titilola Sodo; Chairmen of Boards, Commissions and Agencies,

OKEHO INDIGENES AND OYSCOHEST MANAGEMENT CANVASS FOR INCREASE IN STUDENTS' ENROLMENT AT OYSCOHEST OKEHO SATELLITE CAMPUS AS APERO OMO OKEHO ORGANIZES EDUCATION SUMMIT

 

In its efforts at ensuring that the OKEHO Satellite Campus of Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology Eleyele Ibadan does not go into extinction, Apero Omo OKEHO organised an Education Summit  to sensitize the INDIGENES, parents, guardians and other stakeholders  on the need to send their children to the Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology's OKEHO Satellite Campus for further education.

Welcoming the guests to the Education Summit held at OKEHO Town Hall  in  Kajola Local Government, the  President of Apero Omo OKEHO Global, Pastor Favour Adewoyin  called on the people of Oke Ogun to take advantage of the opportunity of having the Campus sited in Okeho and enroll their children for the courses at the Satellite Campus to ensure the development of the College.

Pastor Adewoyin commended the College  Governing Council, the Management  and Staff of Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology  for their efforts at  revamping the glory of the Health Institution in OKEHO.

He advised the people of Oke Ogun to see the OKEHO Satellite Campus of  the College as their own,  emphasizing that all hands must be on deck  to ensure that the school gets higher patronage by students in the area  seeking admission  for tertiary education .

The Provost of the College, Mrs Oluyemisi Oyewo took time to enlighten the audience about the prospects of the courses being offered on the campus and admonished them to support the development of the campus,  expressing the optimism that the campus had the chances of running additional courses and becoming a full fledged institution in the nearest future.

Oyo Government Prioritizes Fire Fighters Welfare - G.M

The General Manager, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Reverend Yemi Akinyinka has said that the present administration in the State is committed with the welfare of 

 fire service men in the state.

In a statement issued and signed in Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, the General Manager said the present administration in the State is working to improve the working conditions of the fire fighters men in the State.

The statement reads in part "I am  grateful for your  interest in our  organisation that makes you get  information with  ease."

 

"The Oyo State Government under the  leadership  of Engineer Seyi  Makinde is working  to improve the  welfare of  the fire fighters in the State." 

 

"I am  assuring  you  before the  end  of  this  year  reasonable  things  would be done, What  happened  on Tuesday was  just  unfortunate. " The statement said.

He continued "I don't  ignore  press calls  because  we are  partners  in progress. If you  call and  I don't  pick  send  messages."

He enjoined people in the State to always cooperate with the men of the Oyo State Fire Services Agency on their efforts to save the life and properties of the citizens.

He added that Governor Seyi Makinde is a friend of the masses, hinting that, the Governor run people centric Government.
