Drugs, Internet Influence, Worse Threats to Youths – Oyelade

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, has urged Nigerian youths to steer clear of drugs and negative internet influences, warning that both vices have ruined many promising lives.

Speaking on Tuesday at the opening of Forge Camp 3.0, a mentoring outfit for 100 boys held at the Olubadan Stadium, Ibadan, Oyelade described youthfulness as an exciting but vulnerable stage that often exposes young people to costly mistakes.

“Young people are always in a hurry to taste the good things of life, and in that process, they sometimes embrace both the good, the bad, and the ugly,” he said. “That is why genuine mentoring is important. Sadly, many of our youths now take guidance from partners in crime instead of positive role models.”

The commissioner identified drug abuse and wrong internet exposure as the most toxic threats facing today’s youths, stressing that both have thrown many families into chaos. He therefore charged parents to pay closer attention to what their children watch, read, and the company they keep.

Oyelade encouraged youths to embrace mentoring and resist distractions, reminding them that God created everyone for a purpose. According to him, though life is full of challenges, young people are uniquely configured to overcome them and must strive to live lives free of indiscipline and vices.

“If you succeed, you are obeying God’s instruction, making your parents proud, and avoiding costly mistakes,” he said, urging the participants to be shining examples of success.

He also commended the Hope for Second Chance Foundation (HOSEC) for rehabilitating youths and discouraging them from drug addiction and other vices, describing its effort as “a noble but tough task.”

Declaring the camp open, the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, represented by Engineer Salam Adebayo, described the initiative as a vital step in preparing youths for a digital and sustainable future. He noted that the program aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s reforms, including the recent distribution of tablets to 18,000 teachers to boost digital learning.

Addressing the 100 beneficiaries, Adebayo said: “You are indeed fortunate to be here. This experience will broaden your horizons, awaken your potentials, and the connections you make will last a lifetime.”

In her welcome address, the Executive director of Hope For Second Chance Foundation (HOSEC) Ibukunoluwa Otesile, stressed the need to give equal attention to both boys and girls in tackling crime, abuse, and moral decay. She explained that findings from her  research showed many sex offenders were once victims of abuse in childhood, underscoring the urgent need for early guidance counselling.

Otesile added that while advocacy for the girl child is vital, neglecting the boy child would worsen issues such as violence, substance abuse, and crime. She said Forge Camp was established to nurture children with strong values, discipline, and purpose so they can grow into responsible leaders capable of transforming the nation.

MAKINDE Will Rebuild PDP - MHR, Odidiomo

Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, a member of the House of Representatives and Chairman of the House Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, has lauded Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for what he described as his “resilient and spirited leadership” in repositioning the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for national relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Olajide, who also serves on the Main Committee of the 2025 Elective National Convention of the PDP and is a member of the crucial Zoning Committee, stated this in Abuja, at the end of the 102nd meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.

He praised the governor’s pivotal role in ensuring rancour free deliberations and a smooth zoning process, which he said reflects fairness and balance in the spirit of the party’s founding principles.

According to the lawmaker, Governor Makinde’s deft political management was instrumental in the zoning of the PDP presidential ticket to the South, a decision he believes will not only sustain internal cohesion but also reposition the party as a credible alternative to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Governor Seyi Makinde has shown again that he is not only a leader in Oyo State but also a stabilising force within the PDP nationwide,” Hon. Olajide stated.

“His capacity to rally diverse interests and still ensure a rancour free process speaks volumes of his political maturity. The zoning outcome is fair, balanced and reflects the collective will of the party.”

He noted that the governor’s interventions were consistent with the vision of the PDP’s founding fathers, describing Makinde as the new face shaping the developmental politics of Nigeria.

Olajide emphasised that Engr. SEYI Makinde's track record in Oyo State, where he has combined infrastructural development with people centred governance, has become a model for what the PDP can offer at the national level, while maintaining that the governor’s rising national profile has placed him at par with reform minded leaders driving the evolution of a new political culture in Nigeria.

"Governor Makinde is not just the pride of Oyo State; he is a force the entire nation must reckon with in shaping the future of our democracy.”

“The PDP under Makinde’s influence is demonstrating that it has the courage and determination to send the APC packing. What we are witnessing is a rebirth of the party, one anchored on equity, justice and performance,” the federal lawmaker said.

He urged party stakeholders nationwide to rally behind Makinde and other democratic voices within the PDP to sustain the momentum towards victory in 2027 across Nigeria, insisting that the party has “come to stay as the most organised and people driven political platform in Nigeria.”

VIDEO: Oyo CPS on Monday - Makinde Runs Inclusive Government, Gives Every Group Sense of Belonging – Egbelade, Aare Isese of Oyo State

The Aare Isese of Oyo State, Chief Omikunmi Egbelade, has described the administration of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde as an inclusive one that gives every group a sense of belonging while ensuring equity among the diverse people and interests in the state.

Egbelade, who is also the Baba Yemoja, said this in an interview with The People’s Verdict.

According to him, “Makinde has been running an inclusive administration. Despite being a Christian, he has given adequate recognition to all religions. He does not discriminate against any religion. It is during this Makinde administration that Oyo State is really experiencing full independence. We, traditional religion worshippers, were despised by former administrations in this state.”

He added, “While Makinde was campaigning, he promised to recognise Isese Day and make it a work-free day. This he has fulfilled. Makinde is a promise keeper. This gladdens our hearts to the extent that if he wants to be governor eight times all traditional religion adherents will support him.

“There is a world of difference between how we, traditional religion adherents, were treated by previous administrations and how Governor ‘Seyi Makinde has been treating and relating with us. Going back to even the Western Region era, there has not been an administration like that of Engr. ‘Seyi Makinde; his era is completely different from what we had been experiencing. It is for this reason that we, at the last Isese Day celebration on August 20, 2025, gave him the name, ‘Orisaseyi Omimakinde’.”

Going into specifics on how Makinde has been supportive of traditional religion worshippers, the Aare Isese said, “Before Makinde’s advent, whenever there was an event and there was to be a prayer session, Isese people were neither recognized nor allowed to offer prayers. But since the coming of Governor Makinde, the story has changed. Now, not only do we get invited to state events, we are fully recognized and we are allowed to offer prayers. That means a great deal to us. It is a thing of joy for our people.”

Chief Egbelade said the recognition given traditional religion worshippers by the government has fostered unity among different religious groups in the state.

His words: “All of us; Muslims, Christians and traditional worshippers have become friends. During the ground breaking ceremony of Ijaiye Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone on August 2, 2025, Muslims offered their own prayers and so did the Christians, after which we, the traditional worshippers, offered our own prayers. We all sat together. After the prayers, right in front of the governor, the three of us embraced. We then told the governor that ‘You can see that we are friends.’ The recognition given us by Makinde has curbed religious crisis in Oyo State. He has also, by extension, curbed thuggery. Now in Oyo State, there is peaceful co-existence amongst people of different religious persuasions.”

But the priest has a concern:

“My only worry is that we hope that the governor’s successor would be like him, by allowing people to practise their religions without let or hindrance. I hope that the next governor would not turn different religious groups against one another. Look at the distribution of palliatives; it was divided into three. They gave to Muslims and Christians without leaving us traditional worshippers out. Makinde should be given the title of ‘The Light of the World’ because he has brought light to Oyo State.”

On the benefits the recognition being enjoyed by traditionalists have brought to the state, he said,

“During the celebration of Sango Festival, people come from different parts of the world to participate in it. Similarly, during the Yemoja Festival, people come from different countries to be part of it. These tourists will lodge in hotels; that will buoy revenue for hotels and the government, by extension. Similarly, they will eat, they will drink, and they will also buy souvenirs. By so doing, they are empowering the local businesses and contributing to the growth of the state’s economy. There are so many things that traditional religion practitioners can do to boost government’s revenue generation drive.”

While lauding the governor for his many interventions that have improved the state, Chief Egbelade said, “Let’s take the Ijaiye Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zone, for instance. Look at the number of people that will be employed there. Look at Eruwa and Fasola as well. Look at how he is helping the downtrodden; widows and orphans. Truth be told, Makinde has done well.”

Talking about the roads constructed by the administration, the Aare Isese of Oyo State said, “Iseyin cannot forget Makinde. Look at the Moniya-Iseyin Road. Look at Iseyin-Oyo Road. Ogbomoso can never forget Makinde. Look at the Iseyin-Ogbomoso Road. He is doing the same thing in Ibarapa. The governor has really tried. Again, look at the Circular Road. When it is completed, people coming from Lagos, who are going outside Ibadan, do not need to get into Ibadan. They will veer off at Technical University and head towards their destinations.

“Look at the Ladoke Akintola Airport that is being upgraded to international standard. This will boost the economy of the state and create employment opportunities for the people.”

Chief Omikunmi Egbelade’s verdict: “Governor Makinde is a disciplined man who does the right thing with the right quality.”

UI Don Advocates Service Learning In Curricula To Tackle Unemployment, Boost Skills

Governments and educational institutions across Nigeria have been urged to integrate service learning into school curricula through supportive policies and adequate funding, in order to equip students with practical workplace experience and employability skills required in today’s labour market.

The call was made by Dr. Tolulope V. Gbadamosi, Guest Lecturer and Principal Investigator on a research that was sponsored by the Education Collaborative Network, Ashesi University, Accra, Ghana during a hybrid webinar themed “Service Learning Model for Enhancing Graduate Employability of Professional Students in the University of Ibadan.”

Dr. Gbadamosi explained that the service learning model, developed by a group of researchers, was designed to help students acquire critical skills such as communication, teamwork, and problem-solving areas she noted many graduates currently lack.

“Service learning is learning from the workplace while still in the classroom. It is incorporated into the curriculum in such a way that students not only grasp the theory but also experience its practical application in real-life contexts while rendering services,” she said.

Dr. Gbadamosi emphasized that service learning goes beyond teaching practice, internship and students industrial work experience schemes by identifying workplace challenges and offering solutions. According to her, this approach enables students to apply classroom knowledge directly to societal needs while making meaningful contributions to their communities.

Highlighting its broad benefits, Dr. Bose Orimadegun, one of the Co-investigators, stressed that service learning bridges the three core functions of universities: teaching, research, and community service.

“For academia, it makes teaching more relevant to students and societal needs. For institutions, it strengthens their mandate of teaching, research, and service. And for students, it builds employability skills, shapes attitudes, and better prepares them for post-graduation life,” she added.

She further revealed that the initiative has established partnerships with government agencies, NGOs, and private establishments including the Oyo State Mediation Centre and Emmanuel Chambers(Afe Babalola) where law students gained hands-on exposure to dispute resolution. Other collaborators include the Department of Agronomy, University of Ibadan; GIS Consult Bodija, Ibadan; Immanuel College High School, Orita-UI; Total Healthcare Diagnostics; and Genelab, Bodija, Ibadan.

The team members driving the University of Ibadan service learning project are: Dr. Tolulope  Gbadamosi (Department of Arts and Social Science Education); Dr. Bose Orimadegun (Department of Chemical Pathology); Prof. Olutoyin Fashae (Department of Geography); Dr. Bukola Ochei (Department of Public Law)

VIDEO: Oyo CPS on Monday - Makinde is an outstanding governor, says Oyo Ohanaeze Ndigbo president, Umeh

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Oyo State chapter, Honourable Nwabunike Okey Umeh, has described Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, as an outstanding leader who has greatly improved the lives of residents and transformed the state.

Umeh said this during an interview with The People’s Verdict.

According to him, “I have been in Oyo State for over 30 years and I can tell you that the administration of ‘Seyi Makinde has been outstanding by my own assessment and I want to tell you that most people also have the same thing to say, if we want to be sincere with ourselves.”

He added, “The reality is that he has been a very wonderful governor and the people of Oyo State can as well testify to this. One thing about him is that he is a silent cruiser. He doesn’t make noise in his approach to things.”

Going into specifics, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo said, “During COVID-19, Makinde’s approach to the outbreak was quite unique and outstanding. You know that other governors then rushed to close down markets and shut down businesses. But Oyo State governor didn’t do that. He ensured that the people didn’t suffer because of the situation. We felt it that we had an enlightened governor, a governor with foresight.”

Buttressing his point, Umeh said, “Our people have a proverb that there is a music that if you don’t dance with your legs, you will nod with your head. That is the administration of ‘Seyi Makinde for you. If you are not dancing to his music with your legs, you are nodding to it with your head because you are feeling it in all sectors. Talk about infrastructure, talk about security, talk about peace, talk about cordiality amongst the people, these are the initiatives of a good leader that you can feel.

“It is not that I am exaggerating. It is not that I am campaigning. He has really impacted lives with his leadership in so many areas. Look at the real estate in Oyo State, he has improved that. Look at his ‘zero pothole policy’, everybody is admiring and enjoying it. My friends came from Lagos during my inauguration as President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Oyo State chapter, they said, ‘Ibadan is overtaking Lagos if care is not taken’. That is the initiative of our amiable governor.”

He added, “Look at the Light Up Oyo State project that he is doing. Before his administration, we had instances where people broke into the shops of our people to loot those shops at night. But since the Light Up project started, the security situation has improved; such incidences are no more taking place. Even the night life has improved drastically. So, people who are into night life business are prospering. Makinde’s policies are people-oriented and friendly. So, we can say that ‘Yes, we have immensely benefitted from his policies.’

“Look at the education sector. See what he is doing with the basic education system. Look at the way he is employing teachers and making public schools to be coming up to compete with private schools. Seeing is believing. We know how he has improved the education system in Oyo State.”

The President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Oyo State chapter, noted that a cordial relationship exists between the governor and the Igbo community in the state. This, according to him, is because the governor takes the Igbo people in Oyo State as his children.

He continued, “The governor is a detribalized person; he is not someone who is moved by sentiments. He sees all the subjects under his leadership as one, and he has been so mindful and caring not just about the Igbo people, I know it transcends to other ethnic nationalities in the state. This is why there is peaceful coexistence among the indigenes of Oyo State and the non-indigenes.”

On the benefits the Igbo community in the state has derived from the Makinde administration, Umeh said, “It is fantastic to say that we have benefitted more from the good works and the leadership style of the governor. He is a very pragmatic governor, he is a visionary governor. We know that the essence of good governance is peaceful coexistence, security of lives and properties and infrastructural development. You can see that all of these things are overwhelming in Oyo State. Since we are not segregated, as every other person is benefitting, so are we also benefitting. So, we really thank the governor for his good leadership style and openness to the people of Oyo State as well as the non-indigenes.”

He also noted that the Makinde administration has been instrumental to the growth of Igbo businesses in the state.

His words: “If a businessman is making policies that have to do with business, he is doing so from experience. Governor Makinde has done so many things and introduced policies that are friendly and have enhanced business existence in Oyo State, especially as it concerns the average Igbo man. See for instance, the modern parks he has built. See the one at Iwo Road, it has helped the transportation system and enables our people to have a very good flow of traffic. The park has sieved off the hard boys and transformed them into being responsible because they are taking up responsibilities that are

government-oriented. Everybody can see now. Instead of being non-state actors, they are working for the state. All these things, directly or indirectly, are benefitting the average Igbo man that is doing business in Oyo State. So, we have benefitted immensely.”

Honourable Umeh’s final submission: “Makinde is an excellent governor. He is not just bearing the ‘His Excellency’ title, his own Excellency is real. We can all see that he is His Excellency both in the workings and the name.”
