Alao : Oyo LG Poll, a mockery of democracy

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Engineer Oyedele Hakeem Alao (Allow Alao), has described the local government election held in the state on Saturday as a mockery of democracy.

Alao in a statement by his Media Office, said Governor Seyi Makinde and the state Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), fooled the people of the state by promising free and fair election, stating that what played out was nothing but a charade which cannot stand the test of a democratic norm.

According to him, with the election Governor Makinde has further shown his disdain for the third tier of government as he has consistently kicked against local government autonomy, noting that he and the state electoral body ensured that there was no election throughout the state by withholding election materials from virtually all the polling units.

The Asiwaju of Irokoland while insisting that the governor went this route to save himself from electoral defeat at the local government level, maintained that whatever outcome of the election declared by Makinde and OYSIEC is a phyric victory and mockery of democracy at the grassroot.

He said, "I want to join well meaning citizens of our dear state to condemn what played out on Saturday as local government election, both Governor Makinde and OYSIEC assured of free and fair election but sadly did the opposite by disenfranchising the people by withholding election materials from all the polling units and went ahead to announce results that have been prepared before the election.

"For me the people of the state do not believe in the shenanigans that the governor and the electoral body called election bringing shame to the pace setter state. However it only goes to show that the days of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led government in the state are numbered and at the appropriate time the people of the state would speak with their votes in a free and fair election."

Alao then appealed to the teeming members of the APC in the state not to be dismayed but rather have the hope that the people of the state are eagerly yearning for the return of the party to the Agodi Government House.

He also called for an amendment of the 1999 constitution for a truly independent and unbiased empire in the states to conduct  election at the local government level without the interference of governors who have turned themselves to emperors and who if not quickly checked may truncate the country's democracy.

We congratulate you, we congratulate ourselves - Oyo Govt

Oyo state government has said that the victory of all PDP candidates in the LG elections was predictable.

In a statement issued by the state commissioner for information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, after the announcement of the results, the outstanding performance of Governor Seyi Makinde in the last five years was the major reason why the election turned out to be one-sided.

The Commissioner also attributed the election result to the quality of the candidates which the ruling party presented.

"This is a glowing tribute to the governor and his government as this is the last election under his watch till 2027 when he and the just elected LG chairmen and councillors will end their tenures."

The Information Commissioner observed that surprisingly the opposition party started rehearsing their complaints barely 30 minutes to the commencement of the elections yesterday morning.

He charged them to behave like sportsmen and stop mixing fantasy with democracy.

The Commissioner saluted the commitments of the security team, the OYSIEC chairman and his team for daring to make a difference after the challenges of the past two Local Govt elections

LG POLL: PDP Voters Confident of Victory as Senator Alli Condemns OYSIEC's Conduct of Election

The conduct of the Local Government Election by the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC) has come under heavy criticism from Senator Sharafadeen Alli, who represents the Oyo South Senatorial District. The Senator, who voted in Ward 3 in Ibadan North Local Area, described the electoral process as a sham.

Expressing his disappointment, Senator Alli stated, "What is happening here shows there is no preparedness in the conduct of the election. I will say OYSIEC is out for another game because this is almost 11 o'clock, officers supposed to conduct the election are not here. And this is happening in almost all voting centers in Oyo South Senatorial District."

Alarmingly, he also revealed that the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Eruwa had been attacked and was lying critically in Awojobi Hospital. Despite these events, Senator Alli urged voters to remain calm and not resort to violence.

In contrast to Senator Alli's scathing remarks, the People's Democratic Party (PDP) Chairmanship Candidate in Oluyole Local Government, Hon. Akeem Olatunji, attributed the delay in delivering electoral materials and the presence of officers to logistical problems that would be resolved soon.

Emphasizing the orderly nature of the process, Hon. Olatunji said, "The officers are going to deliver materials soon; they have started in ward one and some other wards. Everything is going on orderly and there is no violence. The reason is, Gov. Makinde did his assignment well by choosing capable people. We have the best candidates from PDP compared to other political parties and we are, therefore, confident of victory in the local election."

Speaking with journalists, Hon. Adedeji Stanley Olajide, also known as Odidiomo, who represents the Ibadan North West/South West Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, encouraged voters to turn out en masse for the local government election.

Concerned about the initially low turnout, Hon. Olajide stated, "I have gone around and I saw a low turn out of voters, but people started coming out around 10 am. I want to encourage voters to take the local government election seriously. The zeal and enthusiasm are not like when we conducted the presidential election last year. Local government election is the bedrock of development in Nigeria. If we want good governance, we must come out to cast our votes. So far, I have not heard any fracas; the exercise is peaceful even in the areas considered as black spots. There are some people voting APC here, but we are confident that PDP will win."

Adding to the conversation, Dr. Nureni Adeniran, the Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in Oyo State, commended the smooth running of the electoral process in his local government.

Dr. Adeniran, who voted in Ward 7, Unit 10 in Ibadan South West Local Government Area, expressed his satisfaction, saying, "The council election is going on smoothly in all the units in South West Local Government. This is our family compound. We are doing it as a family affair despite having other candidates from other political parties in the area. I want to commend OYSIEC for the peaceful conduct of the election in a proper way. The election is conducted in a proper way and you can see the peaceful atmosphere."

"There should be book review and it should be occasionally done every three  years, but publishers should be not be charge too much.

"As Chairman, I had the privilege of witnessing first-hand the dedication and hard work of our team members on the field.

From the early morning setup to the late-night collation of results, I saw the tireless efforts of our volunteers and staff.

I recall one particular moment at the final collation centre when a team member double-checked a result, ensuring accuracy and transparency.

It was a small act, but it exemplified the commitment to excellence that defined our work.

As I moved around the various polling units, I was struck by the enthusiasm and determination of our party faithful.

Despite the challenges and setbacks, they remained steadfast in their resolve to see the candidate of their choice emerge victorious.

The energy was palpable, and it was clear that our message of progress and development had resonated with the people.

At the collation centre, I witnessed the meticulous process of result compilation, with each figure carefully verified and recorded.

The tension was palpable as the results trickled in, but our team remained focused and calm, driven by their dedication to the cause.

And when the final results were announced, the sense of pride and accomplishment was overwhelming.

These experiences have only strengthened my resolve to continue serving and supporting our team in every way possible.

I am proud to lead such a dedicated and hardworking group of individuals, and I am confident that together, we will achieve great things for our party as I am acutely aware that our report is not just a mere formality, but a crucial document that will lend credence and credibility to the entire primary election process.

The National Working Committee (NWC) expects our report to provide a detailed and objective account of the exercise, and it is our responsibility to deliver a comprehensive and unbiased document that will serve as a guide for future assignments of this nature.

Our report will not only provide a over-view of the election process, but also offer recommendations and insights that will help the NWC refine its strategies and improve the overall conduct of future elections.

We take this responsibility seriously, and our team has worked tirelessly to ensure that our report meets the highest standards of excellence.

I am confident that our report will be a valuable resource for the NWC and the party as a whole.

It will provide a roadmap for future success, and help us build on the gains of this election.

We are proud to have played a part in this process, and we look forward to contributing to the growth and development of our party at all times."

Transforming The Brown Roofs Oyo State To Greener Pastures for Tourist Destinations, Governor Makinde - Akin-Funmilayo Magic Wand

It's undeniable that under Governor Seyi Makinde's administration in Oyo State has experienced remarkable development within just five years, earning him the accolade of the most beloved Governor in the state's history.

Prior to Governor Makinde's tenure, the landscape of urban development and tourism in Ibadan, Oyo State, lacked substantial progress. However, his administration's arrival marked a pivotal shift from Poverty to Prosperity.

Despite some dissenting voices questioning Governor Makinde's leadership, it's essential to confront such skepticism with factual evidence. Commissioner Williams Akin-Funmilayo, overseeing the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, has been instrumental in driving these transformative initiatives.

His diligent efforts in revitalizing dormant lands and expanding the state's economy through urbanization are commendable. Notable projects like the Lere Adigun GRAs, Rashid Adewolu Ladoja in Ajoda Town, Baba Koleoso Area, emerging Baywood Estate, and the Dr. Omololu Olunloyo International Park at Airport-Alakia Road signify substantial strides towards Oyo State's extensive growth.

Akin-Funmilayo leadership underscores the government's unwavering commitment to sustainable development and attracting investors to Oyo State, positioning it as a prime destination for tourism and investment which is the goal of His Excellency, Engr Seyi Makinde FNSE the Fogbontolu of Oyo State.

It's imperative to emphasize that these developments are conducted with strict adherence to legal and environmental protocols, showcasing the government's transparency and responsible governance under Commissioner Akin-Funmilayo's stewardship.

In essence, the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development is poised for further advancements, with ongoing projects aimed at bolstering economic recovery and delivering tangible benefits to the people of Oyo State.

As I ink out, my advice to those ranting, causing confusion in the state and technically looking for cheap attention is that, they should wait to see the outcome of these development and not creating unnecessary noise, vilified news.

Commissioner Akin-Funmilayo's commitment, dedication and Governor Makinde's vision to Sustainable Development herald a promising future for Oyo State, elevating it to unprecedented heights in its history.

Why we Embarked on Price Reduction Campaign- Splash/Lagelu FM management explains

The Management of West Midlands Communications Limited, Owners of Splash 105.5 FM and Lagelu 96.7 FM has cited public interest and Corporate responsibility as the trigger for its recent radio campaign against extortionist tendencies being exhibited by some middlemen and traders who perpetually hide under the phantom rise in the exchange rate to inflict more hardship on their already burdened customers.

Nigerians over the last 11 months have been groaning under the excruciating burden of food and commodity inflation occasioned by the removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the naira by the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. However, some government policies in recent times have expectedly given a lift to the value of naira which surprisingly hasn’t reflected in the price of goods and services.

In a chat with Tunde Olawuwo, General Manager Operations of West Midlands, it has become imperative for all well meaning stakeholders to rise up and lend a voice of reason in appealing to traders at various levels to be considerate and be proportionate.

He pledged the stations’ commitment towards continue in its Mantra of Promoting the right Values.

Makinde: Standing up for the people

By Sulaimon Olanrewaju

Monday, April 8, 2024 will remain indelible in the memory of Messrs Nurudeen Abiola and Taiwo Adeagbo Adigun of the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA) as well as their families because of the visit of Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, to both men in their modest homes at Binukonu Olunloyo and Oke-‘Badan areas of Ibadan respectively. The visit looked too good to be true, but it was also too real to be illusory.

The expressions on the faces of many of those who were in attendance betrayed their bewilderment.

It was a visit neither of the men or even their relations could have foreseen but it was a visit that changed the narrative of both men.

It was a visit that elevated the profile of the men. It was a visit that sent a message to dedicated and devoted civil servants in Oyo State that their industry and commitment to the ideal which the state upholds would not be ignored.

It was a visit that sent a message to all and sundry that the life of every citizen of Oyo State is valued by the governor and the government. It was a visit that showed that the wellbeing of everyone in Oyo State matters to the governor.

It was also a visit to send an unequivocal warning to all that any attempt to trample on the rights of the citizens or stand in the way of the law in the state would be resisted by the resolve of the governor and the resources of the state.

However, the build up to the visit was not exactly a pleasant experience.

The two OYRTMA officials had been about their duties of managing traffic at Onipepeiye, Old Ife Road area of Ibadan when they effected the arrest of a man who was driving against traffic.

The arrest and the ensuing melee culminated in the OYRTMA officials being brutalised by some Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) officers attached to Zone F.

In the days of yore, this would have been handled administratively with the matter ending up under the carpet and the brutalised men having to nurse their wounds, trauma and shame in the confines of their homes. But when Governor Makinde got to know of this incident, not only did he resolve to address it, he also decided to put an end to such ignominious acts.

Makinde visited the victims of the brutality to comfort them and assure them of the support of the state government.

The governor told the men that those who brutalised them would have a rendezvous with justice as the state would ensure their prosecution. He also visited the Nigerian Immigration Service’s office to underscore his displeasure about the ill-treatment meted out to his men and to register his determination to see that such would never recur in the state.

Governor Makinde never stops his demonstration of love for the people of Oyo State. Every one of his actions as a governor speaks to the infinite love he has for his people.

The governor shows the people so much love because he realises that love is the ultimate leadership tool.

There is a nexus between love and leadership.

The objective of love is to make its object better. Hence, love is never passive but rather passionate; it never takes a rest until its purpose is accomplished. Similarly, true leadership is focused on bringing out the best in people and situations. When a leader loves his people, he values them and goes all out to serve them. Consequently, he pulls out all the stops to shield them from harm and stands up for them when occasions demand.

It is the calling of leaders to do for others what they cannot do for themselves but that becomes feasible only in an atmosphere of love. Leaders wield enormous power but that power is to be deployed for others’ benefit. Great leaders use their power to add value to others; they use their power to defend their people; they deploy their power for the purpose of enhancing the quality of lives of others by helping them to realize their goals and aspirations.

Not only does Governor Makinde love the people he leads, he also understands the essence of his office and the purpose of his power.

He understands that his primary assignment as the state chief executive officer is to protect the people and ensure their wellbeing. That is why he took it upon himself to visit the OYRTMA personnel rather than sending representatives.

The Governor’s action has a long-lasting effect on the people because while he might have risen specifically in defence of the two OYRTMA personnel, he actually spoke for everyone in the state.

He has shown that every citizen is important irrespective of their status or station. He has also demonstrated the resolve of the state to defend every citizen.

Gestures like that, according to the law of reciprocity, are usually recompensed by citizens.

The law says that everyone who has enjoyed a good deed feels indebted to whoever made it possible and looks forward to an opportunity to reciprocate same.

As a result of what the Governor did, Oyo State citizens, whether they are in the civil service or not, are motivated to support the governor in his bid to improve the state.

They are also inspired to give their best at all times for the state knowing that they have the support of the state.

As a result of what Makinde did, Oyo State citizens will trust him more and go out on a limb for their state because they know that the Governor has got their back.

The people are encouraged to take risks for the state because they know that they will be protected should things run contrary to expectations.

What leaders demand from the followers most of the time is total commitment. But commitment does not happen in a vacuum, commitment is a product of trust. When the people know that their leader will protect them, they grow to trust him and this inspires commitment in them.

When leaders make it abundantly clear that they will protect their people’s interest even beyond the call of duty, what they earn in return is the trust of such people.

One thing about trust is that it cannot be legislated; it is a response to the leader’s attitude to others. A leader that values his people and cares for them will earn their trust with ease.

On the other hand, when a leader is lackadaisical about the wellbeing of the people, it will be difficult to earn their trust. The best such leader can hope to get from them is compliance.

The difference is that while the committed are willing to go the extra mile, the compliant are not willing to go beyond the call of duty. While the committed own the task, the compliant do not. They do not see the task as their own but the leader’s. So, they are not bothered by its success or failure.

Caring for the people is not quite common in Nigeria. More often than not Nigerians are made to feel as if they count for little.

Everyone with a measure of power rides roughshod over the common people without any consequence. Institutions take advantage of the citizens without any help from anywhere. Military men, paramilitary men and police officers denigrate the average citizen without any redress.

Even foreigners assault Nigerians within the shores of the country and get away with it.

The people need to be defended, that is why they have leaders. When leaders fail to protect their people, the people resort to self help.

This is one of the factors fuelling lawlessness and criminality in the country.

Governor Makinde’s action of standing up for the helpless and demanding justice for them is a demonstration of great leadership. When leaders rise in defence of the people, the people rise to build a great society.
