EASTER THE CORE OF CHRISTIANITY - Dr. Aladekugbe

The Lord Bishop of Ibadan North Anglican Diocese, Rt Rev Dr Williams Oluwarotimi Aladekugbe has described Easter as the core or center of Christianity.

In his Easter message contained in the press release issued and signed by the diocesan communicator, Comrade Ayoade Solomon Olugbemiga.

According to the bishop, if Jesus didn't resurrect, our religious activities are in vain for only Easter gives humanity the hope of eternity, backing up his assertion, the clergy apart from Biblical references, quoted former German chancellor Kenrad Adenaver in The Daily Bread saying,"if Jesus Christ is alive, there is hope for the the world, if not I do not see the slightest glimmer of hope in the horizon, added I believe Christ resurrection to be one of those attested facts of history.

The clergy called on religious bodies especially the Christian preachers to make their teachings soul winning based and not always material gains and prosperity.

Further more,he stressed that Jesus resurrection was evidenced in the fact that He was crucified, buried, raised from the death and that after resurrection appeared to Mary, Thomas and disciples before ascension to heaven.

It would be recalled that Easter is seen as pascha or resurrection Sunday in the commemoration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead on the third day of His crucifixion.

Journalists demand justice for brutalised colleague by DSS officers in Oyo

Journalists in Oyo State rally to demand justice for their colleague, Mr. Tony Babatunde Daniel, who was brutally assaulted by DSS officers on Friday in Ibadan.

The incident, which occured at the NNPC filling station near the State NUJ Press Centre in Iyaganku GRA, has sparked condemnation from the media community, prompting urgent calls for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice.

Daniel's harrowing ordeal unfolded around 9:30 am when he was reportedly beaten by DSS officers, leaving him brutally injured before he was rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

His colleagues, who were angry by the brazen attack on their fellow journalist, have united in a resounding chorus demanding swift and decisive action from the DSS headquarters to apprehend those responsible for heinous act.

Daniel recounted the events that transpired at the NNPC station, where a routine fuel purchase turned into a nightmare of brutality and intimidation at the hands of the DSS officers.

Describing the traumatic experience of being assaulted and threatened with his life, he detailed the violent encounter that left him battered and his car damaged.

He also narrated the excessive force and aggression exhibited by the alleged perpetrators.

The disturbing account of Daniel's ordeal has led to his colleagues expressing solidarity and demanding accountability for the heinous assault on one of their own.

The shocking brutality unleashed on  Daniel has not only left him physically scarred, but raised troubling questions about the conduct of security operatives entrusted with safeguarding the public.

This heinous act is coming just 24 hours after the FirstNews editor, Mr Segun Olatunji was released from the captivity of the Defence Intelligence Agency(DIA), another security agency in the country.

The brazen attack on a journalist in the course of his duty has reignited concerns about press freedom and the safety of media practitioners, prompting a united front in condemning the wanton violence unleashed by the DSS officers.

The spotlight is firmly on the DSS headquarters to swiftly investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and ensure that they face the full force of the law for their reprehensible actions.

Eyewitness account corroborated  Daniel's harrowing account, expressing shock and disbelief at the brutalisation meted out by the very officers entrusted with maintaining law and order.

This incident has raised broader concerns about the conduct and oversight of security agencies, highlighting the need for reforms to prevent such flagrant abuses of power.

As the clamour for justice grows louder and the spotlight intensified on the perpetrators of this heinous act, the resolve to seek redress and ensure accountability remained unshaken

Ile Delesolu Oje; Ibadan Legendary Crocodile Bows Out After 84 years of Existence

By Deji Ola

Over the years, many Tourists have ticked the ancient city of Ibadan as their choice and the popular Delesolu’s Palace always stand out as one of the preferred destinations due to the availability of many historical sites in the palace and its environs. The palace which is located at the Oje Community, Ibadan North East local Government Area of Oyo State is known for its uniqueness of rearing crocodile as a pet. Today, 28th March, 2024, the legendary crocodile passed away.

According to the head of the family and a very respected Chief in Ibadan land, Chief Raufu Yusuffu Delesolu (Ayingun Olubadan), the crocodile was brought to the Igbejo Delesolu in 1940 after the first one was bought by some white men. Since then, it has been in Delesolu’s compound until its demise today.

Chief Raufu further explained that, the white  people from all walks of life including Africans loved seeing and feeding it with all sorts of food.

“I grew up to know pet as it had been in existence before I was born, It was about 84 years” he noted.

“Historically, the crocodile had never been reported to be a god as our fathers did not at any moment worship it”

“They only visit it every day to feed it and to be sure of its well-being.”

Baba took us on memory lane as he stated that, in the olden days before its house was adequately constructed, the crocodile used to crawl out whenever there was heavy rain and men in the compound would now start searching for it. There was a day when it was found in the muddy gutter very close to the palace, at Ojo Ibadan compound to be precise.

It was later brought back to its house.

He however reiterated that, the crocodile is not a god as being speculated by many people. It is just a pet cherished by their forefathers and the onus is on them to preserve this important  heritage.

As at the time of gathering this report, the members of the family are grieving and there is ongoing burial arrangement for the dead reptile as it would be buried in the family compound.

But trust me, there are still other tourist attractions in the family compund and Oje community at large;  and there is also high tendency of getting another pet in order to continue preserving the heritage of their forefathers.

Makinde: Making room for everyone at the table

By Sulaimon Olanrewaju

The whole place erupted in rapturous joy when Governor Seyi Makinde announced that the 700 stalls in the newly constructed market at Agodi Gate Junction would be given free of charge to the displaced street traders, who had illegally occupied the space before the government moved in.

The Governor’s speech was temporarily disrupted as the traders, who could not contain their joy, trooped out to express their appreciation to Oyo State governor.

Apparently the traders had waited in bated breath to hear what the Governor would say. They had, over the past 10 months, lived in trepidation that the government might have deceitfully pushed them out of the space to bring in a new set of people to take over the newly constructed market. But Governor Makinde pleasantly surprised them by not only giving them the stalls but giving them free of charge.

When the traders managed to bring their emotions under control, the Governor continued.

“The shops that are here are for those trading by the side of the road, and they will be given free of charge. Nobody will collect one Naira from you. This means 700 of you will be moving out of the street into this place. So, we thank God.

"We can see how beautiful this environment is now and our plan is to keep it that way. Street trading and illegal dumping of refuse at road medians are two uncivil acts we must do away with as citizens.

“I have given a directive that anyone found carrying out such activities in this area should face the full wrath of the law. As we celebrate this accomplishment, I vow to do more for our people because it is our belief that you will reciprocate by protecting this project."

Governor Makinde was later joined by Anambra State governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, to commission the project after which the two governors drove out of the premises and headed for Badeku village for the flag-off of the 32.2km South East wing of the Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road.

Before leaving for Badeku, I decided to go to where the traders were assembled to see if I could have a word with one of them.

As I scanned the faces, my eyes fell on a dark, averagely built woman in her forties donning the traditional ankara iro and buba. I moved close to her and engaged her in a conversation. I introduced myself as a journalist.

“I saw that you were so happy when the Governor announced that the stalls would be allocated to traders free of charge. Why were you that happy?”

“You can't understand.”

“That's why I need you to explain it to me.”

I noticed a change in her countenance as she tried to fight back tears.

I stretched my hand to touch her. “I am sorry if I said anything wrong. Please forgive me.”

She managed a smile. “No, it has nothing to do with what you said.” She took a deep breath as she continued. “You don’t know what it means to trade on the streets. You may think it is easy but it is not; it is akin to a daily rendezvous with death.

I have seen, on many occasions, how young people who were full of life one moment were knocked down to death by a reckless driver or motorcyclist a matter of minutes later.

I have also seen the same thing happen to old people. Street trading is living on the edge.”

“But why engage in street trading knowing it is that dangerous?”

“For many of us, it is a Hobson’s choice; the only choice we have. It is a choice we were forced to make.

There are shops all over this area and I for one would have loved to sell my wares in a shop but how can I rent a shop when the worth of my business is less than N50,000?”

“Wow!” I said. “How did you get into street trading?”

"I grew up here," she said with a wry smile. "I became conscious of this place as a five or six-year-old girl. As a matter of fact, my mother was delivered of my younger sister here. So, street trading has been my life. It was also my mother's life until

her death."

"Really? Sorry about that. May her soul continue to rest in peace."

"Amen, thanks."

"I am sorry, did you have an opportunity to go to school at all?"

"Yes, up till JSS3.”

“Why did you stop at that point?”

“There was no money to continue. That was the point at which I became a full street trader. Before that time, I always joined my mother after school to hawk her wares. When I stopped schooling, I worked under my mother for about two years before I started my own business.”

“How did you raise money to start your business?”

“It was my mother’s idea. May God rest her soul.”

“Amen,” I said.

“When it became obvious that I couldn’t continue with my education, there was no question of what I had to do. I had already been integrated into the street trading culture. So, it was the obvious path for me to toe. But my mother said she would not want me to do this for too long. So, she started a weekly contribution specifically for her to raise money for me to start my own business. The plan was that she would save the money for two years with the intention of handing it over to me. She also said she would continue the contribution for two additional years after setting me up in business so that I could use the money to get a shop. However, less than a year after I started my own business, she took ill. She was hospitalized for about three months before she eventually died. I took over her space and that put paid to my mother’s dream of taking me out of street trading.”

“I am so sorry to hear that.”

“That is why I was probably happier than all others when Governor Makinde announced that we were going to be given the stalls. That means I will no longer be a street trader. What my mother wanted to do for me, but could not do due to her sickness and death, Governor Makinde is going to do.”

“I am so happy for you.”

She laughed heartily. “Thank you. But deeper than that is that I had been thinking that street trading is a generational curse for me.”

I chuckled as I shook my head in disagreement with her.

“You may laugh as much as you want but I know what I am talking about. Street trading started with my mother, she handed it over to me. Already, my first daughter has joined me in this business, though she is still in school. I started like that. That’s three generations of street traders. If not for Governor Makinde’s intervention, the likelihood of her ending up like me is quite high. But with me becoming a stall owner, even if she chooses to become a trader later, she won’t be on the street. That is a thing of great joy for me. So, I thank the Governor for breaking this generational curse of street trading in my lineage. Apegun idile run ni Gomina. The Governor is a generational curse destroyer.”

“I congratulate you and the others.”

But the woman was not done yet.

“Even if the Governor had said we would pay a token for having the stalls we would have been quite happy. But he said we are going to have the stalls free of charge. Ha! That is beyond our expectations. We are very grateful to the Governor. Gomina f’aye gbawa, Gomina kawa kun eeyan. Iwaju, iwaju ni won o moo lo. The Governor has made room for us! The Governor has elevated us! Irreversible progress is his lot.”

By this time the woman had become emotional as her eye welled up.

I patted her and said, “Madam, it is well. God has turned around your story. May God prosper the business and take you from this stall to a bigger place.”

“Amen, thank you, sir.”

“But I have a question. How will you and others ensure that this place is well taken care of as requested by the Governor?”

She beamed a smile.

“That is the easiest thing to do. Apparently, you don’t understand the impact of what the Governor has done for us. We who others considered as nobody, the Governor has made somebody. We who were eating on the floor, the Governor has given a space on the table. We would be ingrates if we failed to take care of this beautiful place.”

As the woman danced in unconcealed mirth away from my presence to join her colleagues, what Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo had said earlier while speaking about Governor Makinde rang loud in my ears: “When the righteous are in power, the people rejoice.” I imagined the quantum of joy that would spread across the city that Friday as the 700 new stall owners regaled their family members of their good fortune.

The Chief of Staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, Mr Tayo Ayinde, on Wednesday served a notice to the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, to retract what he decribed as “heavy and damaging allegations” allegedly made by the traditional warlord or face legal action.

In the notice served through his lawyer, Olumide Fusika, Ayinde stated that he had heen inundated with local and international telephone calls as well as personal visits informed by some references to him in a Press Release, titled “I did not take part in killing Chief Bola lge”, by Sunday Adeyemo, denouncing the accusation of the Aare.

The allegation by the Aare which has since gone viral, recounts a supposed plot by the chief of staff and popular human rights activist, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho to eliminate him.

In the Press Release, Sunday Adeyemo claimed to be reacting to “issues raised by the voice notes going around on social media’”, released by Aare Gani Adams which attacked his character.

The legal notice also detailed the allegations made by Gani Adams in a two part series of Yoruba and English language translations.

Warning the defendant that his accusations were damaging, it further requested that a retraction be made via a Press Release or a voice note circulation through social media if necessary.

The legal notice read in conclusion: “You will agree with me that the imputations in the above are as serious and damaging as those who have listened to the voice notes’ have represented it to my client by their telephone calls and visits.

Seyi Makinde: Hope for Progressive Leadership for Nigeria

By Dare Adeleke

As Nigeria enters another crossroad of our democracy process headed by a party which has brought nothing but suffering to the people, it is high time we did things differently. It is time to hand over to the younger generation of professionals and successful businessmen who have passed through the murky paths of politics and governance but have emerged as excellent examples of leadership and service to the people.

In the realm of contemporary Nigerian politics, one figure stands out as a beacon of hope and progress, His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. With a unique leadership style deeply rooted in people-centric policies and unwavering dedication to societal advancement, progress and non-selective development, Governor Makinde embodies the qualities of an exemplary leader fit to helm the nation.

There are many reasons why those who have studied the phenomenal Seyi Makinde are seriously calling on him to run for president of the federal Republic of Nigeria, having given eight years of sterling leadership to his state, Oyo, as the best governor yet:

People-Centric Leadership:

Governor Makinde’s leadership philosophy revolves around prioritizing the welfare and aspirations of the people. From day one, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to putting the needs of citizens first. His policies, ranging from healthcare to education, to security, agriculture, Transportation, development and progress, reflect a keen understanding of the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians, and his actions consistently aim to uplift the marginalized and vulnerable segments of society. I will continue to mention Makinde’s exceptional performance during the COVID-19 pandemic. As an opposition state, he went at it alone. Faced the virus like a general at war and Oyo recorded very few casualties. Makinde himself who was on the frontline, caught the virus but beat it to the Glory of God. That is the kind of man we want to rule Nigeria, not those who are hypocritical in all the do and say.

Economic Empowerment: Under Governor Makinde’s stewardship, the economy of Oyo State has experienced significant growth and stability. His administration’s prudent fiscal management and strategic investments have propelled the state towards prosperity. By injecting funds into the economy, ensuring prompt payment of salaries, and creating employment opportunities, Makinde has fostered an environment conducive to sustainable economic development.

Oyo has received massive investments in different sectors, Agriculture is at an all high with the state aiming at self sufficiency in food production and consumption.

The Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has claimed an unprecedented peak and Ibadan has completely transformed to a true world class metropolitan city.

Inclusive Governance: Makinde’s inclusive approach to governance is commendable. He has actively engaged with diverse stakeholders, traditional rulers, women, youths, including people with disabilities, to ensure that their voices are heard and their needs addressed. Initiatives aimed at improving accessibility, healthcare, and educational opportunities for marginalized groups underscore his commitment to building a more inclusive society where everyone has an equal chance to thrive.

Infrastructure Development: The transformation of Oyo State’s infrastructure under Governor Makinde’s leadership is nothing short of remarkable. From road construction to the building and renovations of healthcare facilities, his administration has prioritized infrastructural development, thereby enhancing the quality of life for residents and fostering economic growth. The overhaul of transportation systems, providing modern air-conditioned buses even before the current and controversial removal of subsidy mayhem and the revitalization of public institutions stand as testaments to his vision for a modern and progressive Oyo State which will be transferred to Nigeria if he runs for president.

Security and Stability: In the face of security challenges, Governor Makinde has exhibited exemplary leadership by championing initiatives aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of all citizens. His proactive approach to security, including the establishment and support of the Amotekun security outfit, has contributed to the maintenance of peace and stability in Oyo State.

We must remember that it takes a man with the heart of a lion to rule Nigeria. We must also remember that when other governors were foot dragging on the formation of Amotekun, Makinde came out like a General to lead his people. He not only championed the cause but also funded and launched it.

Not to be left out is his continuous collaboration and immense support for the Nigerian Police in Oyo State, recognizing that the police has the onerous duty of protecting citizens.

Crises Management: It is common knowledge that before Makinde’s emergence, Oyo State was a hot hub for all kinds of violence and anarchy.

Makinde meandered that terrain with wisdom, diplomacy and sternness where need be; such that Oyo is calm and peaceful today. He approached dissidence with the rule of law and quelled any uprising by nipping it in the bud. On security, we can safely say, Makinde scored an A+. Imagine if he were to bring such experience to the national sphere as president, I assure you that the Egyptians you see today, you shall see no more, as the saying goes.

Party Loyalty and Ideals: Governor Makinde’s alignment with the principles and ideologies of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) testify to his commitment to progressive values and inclusive governance. His unwavering support for the party and its agenda reflects a deep-seated belief in the transformative power of collective action and political cohesion. As leader of the PDP South West Zone, he fostered unity. The party which was heavily polarized before his emergency, is now a united party speaking with one voice.

CONCLUSION

They say the hue of the morning fog determines how the day will look like. His Excellency, Engr. Seyi has proved beyond reasonable doubt that he will do better that those who have seized power through the ballot since 2015, putting the whole country through unbelievable hardship. There is need for a change of baton. If you have no clue, please make way for a man who has shown beyond any reasonable doubt that he has and he is in tune with modern developmental templates.

Undoubtedly, Egnr. Seyi Makinde’s exemplary track record as Governor of Oyo State speaks volumes about his leadership prowess and vision for a better Nigeria. His dedication to the people, progressive policies, and transformative initiatives position him as a formidable candidate for the presidency of our great nation, Nigeria. As Nigeria navigates the complexities of governance and seeks a path towards sustainable development, Makinde stands out as a leader with the vision, integrity, and capability to lead the nation to greater heights and we hereby call on his Excellency, Engr. Seyi Makinde to run for President.

Why We Need To Empower, Celebrate Black Women’s Resilience - Creative Artist, AYO'LAMIDE

A talented creative artist, based in Ibadan, Oyo State, Mrs Olamide Ayomipo Adesola, who is popularly known as AYO’LAMIDE, has called for the need to highlight the experiences of Black women, recognizing the importance of amplifying their voices and celebrating their resilience for the purpose of empowering them.

Ayo’Lamide, a graduate of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, who made the submission over the weekend, during a media chat, noted that most of her works center on figurative expressions that reflect environmental beliefs and cultural ties to the Black race.

While saying her artistic practice is deeply rooted in personal experiences, she noted that she uses her creativity through arts to connect with a broad audience, particularly women.

She maintained further that, through her work, she tries to shed light on the often overlooked sacrifices of Black women, seeking to challenge unjust societal norms and spark conversations about their struggles and pain.

“I try to achieve this through striking use of vibrant colour palette and a conscious choice of a deep rooted sense of subject matter. Ultimately, my intention is to inspire viewers to advocate for positive change and challenge outdated socio-cultural beliefs.

“Over the years, I have exhibited my art both domestically and internationally, contributing to ongoing dialogues surrounding identity, gender, and social justice.”

Olamide, despite sustaining spine injury as a result of an accident in the year 2014 when she was undergoing her National Youth Service programme, expressed that she did not allow the circumstance overwhelm her as a woman.

“I got back on my feet in 2015 and went back to doing what I know how to do best.” She stated.

She was employed into the Oyo State Civil Service as a Cultural Officer II, Visual Arts Department in the year 2016.

Owing to her brilliant artistic work, Olamide, who had attended several exhibitions and National and local art festivals was, at a time, commissioned to produce Art works, which were presented to Oyo State Executive Council Members.

While saying that her daddy discovered her artistic skill when she was a little child, she said she was very keen on passing art knowledge to others, as well as always willing to teach those who have interest in work of arts.

“I am an artist (painter), whose works center on figurative expressions that reflect my environmental beliefs and cultural ties to the Black race. Utilizing naturalistic elements with a hint of exaggeration, my artworks serve as creative reflections of these themes.

“I am particularly drawn to highlighting the experiences of Black women, recognizing the importance of amplifying their voices and celebrating their resilience for the purpose of empowering them. By capturing nuanced facial expressions, I invite viewers to empathize with the inner world of the subjects, fostering a deeper understanding of the narratives I aim to convey.

“My preferred mediums of expression are oil and acrylic paint, as they offer the versatility and depth necessary to bring my artistic visions to life,” Olamide said.

Hardship: AWDROP offers help to Tinubu on food security

…says borehole now out of reach of poor Nigerians, urges govt to rescue situation

The Association of Waterwell Drilling Rig Owners and Practitioners (AWDROP) in Nigeria, has offered to assist President Bola Tinubu led Federal Government in areas of ensuring food security by deploying their expertise in groundwater resources on irrigation projects across  the country.

The association also decried that the poor in Nigeria can no longer afford to drill borehole s because of the rising cost of things and urged government to rescue the situation.

National President of the Association and development expert, Mr. Micheal Ale, made the remarks on Friday during the association ‘s 7th National Borehole Practitioners Conference and Congress held at Reverton Hotel in Kogi State.

He said:” The cost of drilling boreholes had increased from the usual price more than tripple, which is beyond the reach of the middle class not to talk of the poor. Government should rise to the occasion and assist the poor.”

The event, organized by AWDROP, is a biannual gathering that aims at addressing  the challenges of borehole sustainability in Nigeria's current economic climate.

Ale also assured the FG that his association was ready to partner with government on other areas, especially in tackling water borne diseases, to ensure meaningful growth and development.

Mr. Ale who highlighted the imperative of hiring technocrats such as members of AWDROP to assist on borehole sustainability right from the conceptualization stage to execution, expressed concerns over the humongous  amount of money government usually spend on borehole projects with little or no significant impact on the financial and social well-being of the communities they serve.

Noting that failure to fully partner with AWDROP in such areas accounts for the insignificant output, he therefore assured that the alarming rate of water-related diseases recorded in hospitals across the country, would drastically reduce if FG partners with his team in handling several water related projects.

Ale itemized areas of needed partnership with government to include technical and financial regulation within the sector, monitoring and supervision of projects, collecting data on dysfunctional facilities, and exploring water for irrigation to enhance food security, he added that: ” These are just a few areas where partnership could make a significant impact.

Addressing participants at the Conference, Mr. Ale expressed gratitude to the National and local  Organizing Committees for making the event possible. He also recognized the resource persons who were carefully selected to share their ideas. He encouraged all participants to make the most of the conference by networking and enjoying their time in the confluence state.

Mr. Ale also reflected on the progress AWDROP has made since its establishment ten years ago. He noted that while the association's goal of reaching the top echelon of professional bodies has not been fully achieved,  it has established itself as a strong ally of governments and other agencies at all levels in the areas of exploring and  managing water resources. He added that  AWDROP now has a presence in 27 states of Nigeria, including the federal capital territory.

The development expert stressed the importance of AWDROP's slogan, "Water is Life," and how it goes beyond business ventures. His words: “The lack of potable water, especially in rural areas, poses a significant challenge to many Nigerians.  AWDROP is committed to alleviating this suffering, even at the expense of their business profits. The fact now is that  80% of Nigeria's water supply comes from boreholes, making it crucial to regulate and improve the exploration and exploitation of this resource, “ he said.

Mr. Ale also reiterated AWDROP's commitment to partnering with governments, organizations, politicians, and individuals to provide potable water through borehole drilling.
