Drug Abuse: Experts Call On Parents To Watch Over Their Wards

As parts of efforts to educate drug abuse among Nigerian youths, various experts and stakeholders have emphasized the need of the greater roles to be played by parents in ensuring that their children are dissuaded from consumption of illicit drugs.

This declaration was made by speakers at the lecture organised by the All Youth Reoriented Initiative to mark this year's edition of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

Speaking at the lecture with the theme: "Effect of Drug Abuse, Who Suffers Most? The Society or The User" which was organized on weekend in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the lecturers commended the organizer of the lecture saying it was timely and necessary.

Speaking at the occasion on "Mental Health" the Deputy Director, Addiction Theraphist, at the Neuro- Psychiatric Hospital, Aro - Abeokuta, Dr  Solomon Abiodun said parents should not follow the old training method of bullying their children but they should draw them nearer and counsel them on the danger of the drug abuse.

"We need to warn the parents themselves against drug abuse. What you don't have, you don't give . There are some parents themselves that are using drugs. So if you are using drug as a parent, what message do you want to give to your children, it won't be meaningful.

"So the fight against drug abuse starts from the parents. Let them first know the consequences of their actions. If they know the consequences of their actions, they will stop and they will be able to educate their children on the evil of drug abuse.

"Some parents want to train their children, the way their parents trained them. They should note that, this generation is quite different. In those days, children were bullied to toe the right path, but if you bully any child now, you sends him away. Parents need to do everything possible to draw their children closer, so that whatever they are telling them, they will be able to internalise it. Doing otherwise will lead to a terrible error. So we implore the parents to do more of advocacy of taking away of drugs from our society", Dr Abiodun said.

Also speaking on a topic, "Dealing with Drug Abuse" a Staff Officer, Drug Demand Reduction, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA), Ogun State Command, Sarah Afolabi urges parents to keep watch over their children, saying they should not leave their children for school teachers alone, urging parents to create good and positive environment for their children.

"This will make your children to be your friends, unnecessary pressure from some parents make some children to take to drugs and  join bad gangs. Parents must be there to support their children. Education begins from home. It is the habit of the home that children carry to school.

"Parents should therefore pay attention to the attitudes of their children and stop shifting responsibility. They should know that the children are vulnerable, so their attitudes and actions should be monitored constantly", Afolabi counselled.

While delivering his opening remark, the Chairman of the occasion and founder of Harvarde College of Business Science and Management Studies, Abeokuta, Dr. Adebayo Oluwatosin commended the organization for initiating the lecture to sensitise the students on drug abuse.

He said parents have a very serious role to play in ensuring that their children are not drag into drug abuse, noting that parents must keep their two eyes open in monitoring their children.

"My own candid advice to the parents is to keep watch over their kids because when problem starts, it always affects the parent too. The parents should keep constant watch over their kids, talk to them regularly and let them know the disadvantage of even taking alcohol which most of them think is a normal thing in the society", he counselled.

The Legal Adviser of the All Youth Reoriented Initiative, and the Project Coordinator of the Drug related issue of the organization, Barrister Isaac Izunya on his part also corroborated the other  speakers, saying the parents must be close to their children and keep watch over them.

"Parents need to watch closely and understand the characters of their children. And when the characters of their children changes , they should be able to examine the reason for the change and engage their children in discussion.

"One thing we have discovered and recognize about drug abuse is that as you grow, it becomes health challenge rather than a legal challenge. It becomes health challenge because the person involved in drug abuse at a stage doesn't have one hormone or the other.

"So if parents realize and see drug abuse as a health problem, then they will not see the victims as somebody to be flogged but somebody that needs to be draw close and equip with necessary psychological power", he said.

Speaking on the programme, Izunya said All Youths Reoriented Initiative of Nigeria was established to cater for the right and privileges of persons.

"We have done a lot of things that have to do with litigations in other areas that have to do with corruption. But here we are , as part of our objectives to see how we can impact knowledge on the students in order to equip them properly with norms and values to stand above every streets pressure and peer pressure. When students are impacted with this knowledge, it will give them the ability to withstand whatever pressure drug abuse will bring to them", he said.

Students who came top in the essay competition  organised  as part of the programme against drug abuse were rewarded with monetary gifts.

APC brandishing lies as political weapon

By Sulaimon Olanrewaju

In its characteristic disdain for the truth, Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) irked the sensibilities of the good people of the state with a tissue of lies in a statement issued on Thursday, June 20, 2024, on Fasola Industrial Hub, food security in the state and the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER).

Ordinarily, we would not have dignified the statement with any response because Oyo State residents are not only wary of the APC, they are also weary of its lies. So, the average Oyo State citizen discountenances every statement from the APC’s falsehood foundry, knowing that nothing wholesome can emanate thence.  But for the sake of a few who may be beguiled by APC’s stock-in-trade, we wish to set the record straight.

To start with, Governor Seyi Makinde, being a genuine democrat, has never attempted to gag or breathe down the neck of the opposition parties or their members. The Governor, who is the father of the state, acts the part perfectly by giving everyone ample room to operate and ventilate their views without any fear.

As it concerns state matters, the Governor is not partisan because of his belief that the state belongs to all, and everyone is needed to contribute their quotas for the state to attain its envisioned height. But this fact is apparently lost on members of the APC. Perhaps they need some tutoring.

The function of an opposition party is not to fabricate lies to win sympathy, neither is it to run down government functionaries to whip up sentiments. Rather, it is to consistently proffer solutions to societal challenges and offer superior arguments on pertinent issues. By so doing, it puts the ruling party on its toes and wins the respect of the populace.

This positions it as a preferred alternative and brightens its chances for a possible takeover of the reins of power at the next opportunity. But in this respect, the APC in Oyo State has failed abysmally.

Instead of proffering solutions and offering suggestions that can improve the fortunes of the state, it goes about like a kid, who having lost his lunch pack, insults and assaults everyone in sight. In 2024, that’s a shame.

APC, in the un-stately statement, claims that “A large chunk of the facility (Fasola Industrial Hub) has been converted into Housing Estate with most of the plots shared out among the governor and his cronies.”

That is a web of lies.

Here is the truth.

Governor Makinde inherited a dilapidated Fasola Farm Estate. But his desire to transform the state from subsistence farming into an industrialised agricultural centre primarily to boost food production, grow revenue and create employment opportunities drove him into turning Fasola into an industrial hub. The efforts are already paying off as the hub is fully built and currently there are eight multinationals operating therein. Contrary to the fabrication of the APC, Fasola is emerging as a business cluster and not a housing estate.

One of the companies operating at Fasola is FrieslandCampina WAMCO. This company sits on 200 hectares of land, where it runs its dairy activities. There is also Milkin Barn Agro Services Ltd, which occupies 150 hectares for maize cultivation and dairy production. Another company is the E4 Farms with 40 hectares for crop and dairy production. There is also the Brownhill Farms with 30 hectares for crop production and greenhouses and Zigma Ltd with 37 hectares for cashew production.

The IITA-owned Generative and GOSEED Vegetative Ltd is running a cassava value chain outfit on 100 hectares of land.

Pray, with all these where is the space for a housing estate?

What the APC does not know or chooses to ignore is that Fasola Industrial Hub has become a national reference point. Early in the year, the National Project Coordinator, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Sanusi Abubakar, led a team from 16 states of the federation on a field trip to Fasola. After touring the hub, the team submitted thus: “When we talk of livestock center, you cannot find this kind of arrangement that we have in Fasola Industrial Hub in any other place.”

That comment, coming from a national agency, is a badge of honour.

A few weeks back, Vice President Kashim Shettima, while commissioning the 76.67km Alao-Akala Memorial Highway constructed by the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, had nothing but praises for the Oyo State helmsman for his exemplary leadership and commitment to the wellbeing of the people.

The Vice President lauded Makinde’s agribusiness phenomenon and assured the whole state that the Federal Government would support the programme. Now, who should the people believe between the nation’s Vice President and Oyo APC?

APC also stated in its release that:

“In the last five years of the PDP administration, the state government cannot bring out a single visible achievement which has a direct effect on food security or promotion of agriculture.”

This is a deliberate and malicious misrepresentation of the situation.

Here is the truth.

Under Omituntun 1.0, the government embarked on several intervention programmes for smallholder farmers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the government supported 10,000 smallholder farmers with farm inputs and under the Oyo N-CARES project, the government distributed various types of inputs to smallholder farmers across the state, no fewer than 1,500 farmers benefitted from this gesture.

In Omituntun 2.0 under the Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery, the government gave 50kg bags of maize to about 2,600 poultry farmers. Similar gesture was extended to 1,000 fish farmers, cattle breeders and piggery farmers. The government also supported about 10,000 small-holder farmers with seeds and seedlings.

To bring down the cost of food items, Governor Seyi Makinde, during a meeting with farmers and traders in March 2024, announced a 50 per cent reduction in the cost of clearing farmlands. He also announced immediate suspension of revenue collection on farm produce marketed within the state for six months. All of these have significantly improved food security in the state.

Another claim by the APC is that “The Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) was another conduit designed to hoodwink the people of the state.”

This is a blatant lie.

Here is the truth.

The Sustainable Actions for Economic Recovery (SAfER) is a proof of Governor Makinde’s original thinking. At a time when state governments were doling out N10,000 to citizens and giving some cups of grains to the people purportedly to cushion the effect of the twin policy of subsidy removal on Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) and the floating of the naira exchange rate, Oyo State Government came up with a well-thought out programme to empower the people and energise the economy. Makinde did not toe the path of palliative, instead he devised a programme that would result in economic growth.

Through the SAfER intervention, the government provided food items to needy households. It also offered subsidised transportation to students and the aged. In the same vein, free health insurance was provided for retirees, pregnant women and students. Similarly, farmers were offered support, while micro and small entrepreneurs got loans to grow their businesses.

Definitely, the 200,000 needy households that got food support as a result of the SAfER intervention would not agree with the APC that the scheme “was a conduit designed to hoodwink the people of the state.” Neither would the over 1,000,000 people across the state that benefitted from the subsidised transportation nor the over 250,000 that got enrolled free of charge on the health insurance scheme.

Without a doubt, the 3,525 smallholder farmers who got low interest loans totalling N1billion and the 2,085 micro and small business owners who got a total of N500million as loans would waste no time in tagging the APC’s claim a lie.

Dear APC members, now that your lies have crumbled like a pack of cards can we have positive engagements that would foster the development of our dear state?

June 12 : Democracy has come to stay, Alao

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Engineer Oyedele Hakeem Alao (Allow Alao), has felicitated with President Bola Tinubu and all Nigerians on the occasion of June 12.

Alao in a statement by his Media Office to mark 2024 Democracy Day, said June 12 has become a significant day and a turning point in the history of the country which is a testament to the power of democracy and the human spirit.

While describing the country’s democratic rule as a positive development, he stressed the importance of civilian rule in accelerating growth and development across the country, urging the political class to uphold the tenets of democracy in their pursuits.

The Asiwaju of Irokoland who enjoined the people of the country to continue to play their role in deepening democracy by actively participating in the electoral and decision-making process, maintaining that democracy has come to stay in the country.

He urged Nigerians not to forget the sacrifices of those who fought for the democracy we are all enjoying today, including Chief Moshood Abiola, who paid the ultimate price for his convictions, calling on them to get involved and remain steadfast as major stakeholders in the process of governance.

He similarly charged Nigerians to be hopeful of a better and prosperous Nigeria under the leadership of President Tinubu, noting that the President is committed to addressing frontally the various challenges facing the country.

According to him, it is important for Nigerians to support democracy by throwing their weight behind President Tinubu as one year is not enough to judge his administration, insisting that there is no way maize, yam or cassava would be planted and harvested in one month.

He said, "I congratulate Nigerians on the celebration of this year’s democracy day. While it is true that 25 years down the line, our democracy is still grown and has come to stay, the hands of all Nigerians must be on the deck to sustain it.

"Politicians must live up to expectations by playing the game by the rules to the extent that the will of the people must be respected before, during and after elections.

"I nevertheless enjoin Nigerians to join hands together with the administration of President Tinubu in building a prosperous country that we will all be proud of. Indeed, passing judgement on his administration in one year would be doing a disservice to his efforts to turn things around positively knowing fully well what he inherited from the past administrations."

Makinde: Creating prosperity for posterity

By, Sulaimon Olanrewaju

The pre-2019 profile of Oyo State was anything but complimentary. With an internally generated revenue (IGR) that hovered around N1.8billion monthly, the state’s economy was described as ‘largely agrarian, with the Oke-Ogun axis being the state's food basket’.

For a state that started out as the intellectual capital of Africa, a state that beat even France in the television race, a state that already had a skyscraper when Dubai was a little more than a fishing depot in the early 1960s, a state that parades some of the best minds the country has ever produced, a state, which at a point, was home to a long string of companies, the agrarian tag was neither fitting nor befitting.

Knowing that being agrarian in an industrial age is a recipe for peasantry and poverty, Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, on assumption of office in May 2019, resolved to change the state’s narrative by taking definite and decisive steps that would move the state into industrialization. He devised two strategies to achieve this.

The first was to put in motion measures that would shift the state from subsistence farming into industrialization through the agribusiness instrumentality. Fasola Farm Estate was his first port of call. By providing the right leadership, the erstwhile farm estate has morphed into an industrial hub that attracts investors just like sugar attracts ants.

While the wonder of Fasola is that a company is able to produce more than what 1,000 regular farmers would produce, the secret of its success is the application of disruptive thinking and the deployment of cutting-edge technology. Hence, Fasola has become a melting pot of agriculture, science, technology, commerce and industrialization. Fasola is now a study in how agriculture powers industrialization.

With an array of great companies such as Chief Quails Limited, SWAgCo Limited, FreislandCampina WAMCO Nigeria, BrownHill Group and Milkin Barn Agriserve Ltd, among others, Fasola Industrial Hub is beginning to take the shape of a business cluster.

But there is more to Fasola than that. Fasola Industrial Hub is also fast becoming a tourist attraction as different groups regularly visit the hub to see the marvel that the once-abandoned farm estate has become under the leadership of

Governor Seyi Makinde.

In March this year, the National Project Coordinator, Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), Sanusi Abubakar, led a team from 16 states of the federation on a field trip to Fasola. Speaking during the trip, he said:

“We are here in Fasola Farm, a renowned place for livestock breeding and commercialization of livestock value chains that have been here since 1958, and we are impressed with what is happening here. We went to sites where they are training stakeholders on artificial insemination, livestock and pasture centers and are impressed with what is happening here.”

Corroborating the position of the National Coordinator, the Oyo State Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Mr Kola Kazeem, said, “The team from 16 states of the country is in the state to witness what the state governor, Engineer ‘Seyi Makinde, has embarked on in agricultural production and agribusiness development.”

According to him, Fasola Industrial Hub is a signature project for Oyo State and something for other states to emulate, noting that

“when we talk of livestock centers, you cannot find this kind of arrangement that we have in Fasola Industrial Hub in any other place.”

Fasola has also become a learning centre for young farmers as well as a support base for small holder farmers.

Speaking to this recently during a visit by some students of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology to the hub, Director General of Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA).

Dr Debo Akande, said: “The hub is there to support the small older farmers that are around this hub and for it to serve as a center of excellence for learning, knowledge and for tourists and investors to see. Today, we have LAUTECH students of agriculture that came here to learn, and they’re here to learn the modern approach in agriculture. And it can’t be better than this, where those young people see in practical forms what are the modern technologies currently being used and they are able to see all the practical forms of modern ways of agriculture on the field.

They are able to see a new variety of seeds, cassava, without necessarily needing to go to IITA, coming into the hub that the government has built. For me this is great, for them not to have traveled to Ibadan to see new varieties of seeds but coming here, for me that is really amazing, that would have dropped ideas in their minds. They saw the ranches, they saw hundreds of cattle, they saw cross breeding, artificial insemination, they saw green houses, pasture development and ancillary infrastructure.

They now have an understanding of what the development of infrastructure means to agricultural transformation.”

One centre, endless opportunities, that is the story of Fasola Industrial Hub. With the reactivation of Fasola Industrial Hub, Makinde is creating prosperity, not just for the present generation but also for posterity. By tweaking the management structure of the hub, the chances of the hub falling into disuse as was the case in the past have been obliterated.  With the Fasola project already completed, the government is set to replicate this in other zones of the state.

Given his background as an electrical engineer and entrepreneur, Governor Makinde knew that Oyo State could not experience real industrialization sans adequate electricity supply. Energy poverty is a major albatross to Nigeria’s development. Energy poverty has pasteurized Nigerians, impoverished the manufacturing sector and has reduced the country’s industrialization stride to a race into the past. Many artisans have been forced out of their trades due to epileptic power supply.

Makinde knew that to change the agrarian tag on the state, he had to end energy poverty in the state.

The Governor also knew that he could not effectively fight material poverty in the state without first frontally attacking energy poverty. So, on September 30, 2020, Makinde signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shell Nigeria Gas Ltd (SNG) for the construction of a Pressure Reduction & Metering Station (PRMS), which would distribute gas for electricity generation across the state. This was followed with the flagging off of the construction of the gas pipelines at Km 10, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ibadan, on November 16, 2022. A major box in the deal was checked on April 30, 2024, when the final investment agreement was signed in London between the Oyo State Government and Shell Nigeria Gas Ltd.

While speaking about the project, a partnership between Oyo State and SNG, Governor Makinde, who described the project as a catalyst for the development of Oyo State, said:

“This project fits into our plan to drive innovation and industrialization in Oyo State and we’re ready to partner with more companies and other organizations to enhance the delivery of relevant projects.”

He added, “This gas project, worth about $100 million, involves the construction of a Pressure Reduction and Metering Station (PRMS) and laying of pipelines by SNG on Build-Own-Operate-Transfer (BOOT) basis. Ownership will be transferred to Oyo State after 20 years.

“With this agreement in place, we are looking forward to the first flow of gas to industrial, manufacturing and commercial entities as well as our independent power project in Oyo State in 18 months.”

This revolutionary project will open up the state to many possibilities because access to energy is the thread that weaves economic growth and human development together.

First, in about 18 months Oyo State will most likely get into the era of undisrupted power supply to industrial, manufacturing and commercial companies. This means that the companies located in the state would save cost on energy as they would no longer need to expend fortunes on diesel.

They can then ramp up their production with the savings on energy. This also means that they would be in a position to employ more people, thus reducing the unemployment rate in the state.

The increased production would have a telling effect on the state’s Gross Domestic Product as well as the internally generated revenue.

In addition, with undisrupted power supply, the likelihood of many companies relocating to Oyo State is huge. With that, the probability of Oyo State becoming a business hub is high.

With a gas master plan which would make gas available in all zones of the state already in place, the project would eventually improve electricity supply in every part of the state, thus putting Oyo on the path to electricity sufficiency.

This is significant in two ways. One, factories do not have to concentrate in Ibadan or any of the other major towns in the state; they can be located in any part of the state. This would result in employment opportunities being created in rural areas.

Then, by making uninterrupted power supply available in every part of the state, the urge for residents to migrate from rural areas to urban centres would reduce and development would spread across the state.

The Light Up Oyo project would be more impactful with uninterrupted power supply.

This would be a boost to the security of the state as it becomes difficult for people of the underworld to hide under the cloak of the night to perpetrate evil.

Perhaps the zenith of the benefits of the project is that its ownership will be transferred to Oyo State after 20 years. This is humbling.

The only contribution of Oyo State to the project which is valued at $100million is the land on which it is sited. At today’s exchange rate, the project is worth about N150billion.

In 20 years when it is handed over to Oyo State, the value cannot be less than N500billion.

Then, in 20 years, the project would have reached the maturity stage; all the mistakes would have been made and perfected. So, Oyo State would just take over a fully grown and fully developed business and harvest the benefits.

With the gas project, Governor Makinde is not just ensuring energy sufficiency for the state; he is also creating prosperity for today and the future.
