NLC Deadline: Oyo Govt. Waves Olive Branch; flaunts Worker- Friendly Policies

An appeal has gone to Oyo State workers to compliment the efforts the government is making on their welfare by being reflective when considering nation-wide strike.

In a release by the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, on Friday, no state in the federation places more emphasis on the well-being of its workers than the present administration: Not even richer states.

It will be recalled that the Nigeria Labour Congress, Oyo State branch, gave the State government till the end of October, 2023 to increase minimum wage by N30, 000 for civil servants and N20, 000 for pensioners, as approved by the Federal government, to cushion the effect of fuel subsidy removal.

Prince Oyelade said that without being advised by the state NLC, the Oyo State governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde out of his personal discretion, set up a committee on June 5, 2023, to review salaries of workers, barely a week after President Tinubu's announcement of the removal of subsidy.

This same administration has consistently for 55 months, paid workers' salaries on or before the 25th of every month, and paid 13th month salaries for 4 years, which now includes state pensioners.

The Commissioner asked workers and the people of the State to remember that the Seyi Makinde-led administration at inception increased payment of gratuities to pensioners from N100m to over N200m every month. In fact, only last month, cheques worth N208m were released as gratuities to pensioners in Oyo State.

While it is a fact that the financial state of the nation requires increment of workers' salaries, Oyo State workers equally reserve the right to seek local solutions in dialogue with a friendly government, especially on issues that are not caused by the State Government, such as the fuel subsidy removal.

According to the release, the State government has responded swiftly and effectively to cushion the effect of the subsidy removal by setting up the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) intervention in the State, which is addressing the current economic realities in the state.

In this regard, different types of essential food items are being distributed to the poorest of the poor, while 46 buses are plying roads in Oyo State, at subsidised fares.

Farmers and young entrepreneurs are being assisted with N1.5bn soft loans, through zonal Microfinance banks, while pensioners and other vulnerables in the society are being assisted through specially designed free healthcare schemes.

The third face of SAfER will take off in due course.

It is on record also, that the Oyo State government started the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage, over 3 years ago, yet up till now, some states in the federation are still struggling to pay the old wage.

The challenges of paying N7.3 billion monthly salaries notwithstanding, the Seyi Makinde administration distributed 7,000 letters of promotion to qualified civil servants just last week.

Prince Oyelade said, "we are talking about an administration that has made covenant with its workforce and local dialogue and understanding should take precedence over instructions from elsewhere".

Beyond ultimatum and deadline, labour leaders should take advantage of the cordial relationship that exists between them and the government and accept the olive branch.

I recall that the people requested for  free education among other things, hence, my resolve to give free exercise books to them, packets chalk among other writing materials irrespective of the party they belong.

Prophet Godwin Ikuru Rejoices Over Supreme Court Declaration

The presiding prophet of Jehovah Eye Salvation Ministry, Prophet Godwin Ikuru rejoices with  president Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Government over the judgement of the Supreme court on the case filed against him  by the candidates of PDP Alhaji Atiku Abubarkar and Mr. Peter Obi of Labour Party, prophet who once prophesied the victory of the president in the supreme court today said he saw that Atiku and Peter Obi will cry after the judgement.

He thereby congratulate Seyi Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, Nuhu Ribadu and the APC family over the victory.

This is how Tinubu Survives As Supreme Court Dismisses Atiku’s Appeal

Tinubu

The Supreme Court on Thursday, October 26 upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu.

The nation’s apex court dismissed the appeal file by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, for lacking merit.

The court held that Atiku failed to prove that he won the election, stating that there was no alternative figure of votes to counter that validly declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The Supreme Court said it can’t manufacture votes in support of Atiku and PDP.

The apex court dismissed all the grounds of appeal of Atiku and PDP on qualification, non-compliance with the Electoral Act, the 25% votes in FCT, and electoral malpractices.

Justice Okoro stated that since all the seven issues have been resolved against Atiku and PDP, the election of President Tinubu is affirmed.

The Supreme Court declared that the failure of IREV is not a ground for the nullification of presidential election.

The court held that IREV failure does not stop the collation of election.

The Supreme Court stated that the failure by INEC to transmit election results electronically did not affect the outcome of the election and could not warrant the nullification of the result of the presidential election.

Justice John Okoro made the pronouncement in a lead judgement on the appeal by former Vice President and Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, seeking to nullify the February 25, presidential election of President Bola Tinubu.

Reading the judgement, Justice Okoro also declared that none securing of 25% of votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja is not a basis for a candidate not to have been declared winner of the presidential election.

Justice Okoro declared the constitution is for everyone.

The justice stated that the constitution would have stated expressly that presidential candidate must win 25% of votes cast in FCT to be declared as president. But the provision of the constitution does not give room for such.

The failure of President Bola Tinubu to secure 25% of votes in FCT is one of the grounds of appeal against Tinubu’s victory.

The apex court had earlier dismissed the appeal file by Atiku Abubakar on the admission of fresh evidence.

The apex court held that it lacked jurisdiction to admit fresh evidence in the appeal of the judgement of the presidential election petition tribunal.

Justice Okoro said it can’t revoked the constitution to allow Atiku and PDP to supply fresh evidence in the form of documents obtained from the Chicago State University on President Bola Tinubu’s academic records.

Justice Okoro noted that since the time for trial at the Court of Appeal had elapsed, the Supreme Court cannot accept fresh evidence on appeal.

Ruling on the motion, Justice Okoro, held that a clinical look at the issues formulated by all the parties is the argument of whether the court as presently constituted has the power to grant the motion.

Okoro held that out of the seven issues distilled by Atiku for determination, none related or covered forgery, which the appellant is seeking to bring in.

“The Constitution does not permit that, and this court has no jurisdiction to grant the filing of fresh evidence that was not pleaded at the PEPC,” the justice held.

The Supreme Court noted that Atiku did not even deem it fit to file for an amendment of his pleadings and for extension of time, since the 180 days allowed by the Constitution had elapsed since September 17, 2023.

Atiku, had in the motion dated October 5,  pleaded the apex court to grant him leave to bring in additional evidence by way of depositions on oath from the Chicago State University for use in his appeal to wit: the certified discovery deposition made by Caleb Westberg on behalf of Chicago State University on October 3, 2023, disclaiming the certificate presented by the 2nd respondent, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The 32-page deposition was released to the former Vice President on the orders of Judge Nancy Maldonado of the District Court of Illinois, Eastern Division, Illinois, United States of America.

Illegal fees collection: Oyo govt reads riot act to principals, teachers

...says recalcitrant officers will be punished

Oyo State Government has warned principals

and teachers of public schools who have been collecting illegal fees from the students to desist, saying that recalcitrant officers will not go unpunished.

The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu gave the warning on Friday, while speaking with Journalists in his Office.

Prof . Adelabu, who described the act as illegal, reiterated that the Oyo state government policy on Education is free from primary to secondary level in all public schools across the state.

He urged parents and guardians not to pay any fee to principals or teachers, but report anyone who might request or ask them for payment at the ministry.

The Commissioner, therefore, hinted that any principal or teacher found guilty will be seriously dealt with.

According to him, 'before school resumes, We had a stakeholders meeting, where we warned all our teachers to desist from illegal collection of fees.

" Because in Oyo state, the school is free, Education is free in Oyo state; from the basic to secondary schools.

"As regards the collection of illegal fees, we cannot run away from bad eggs among our teachers, we have been hearing this rumor, I call it a rumor because we have been hunting for school principals and teachers that are collecting levies from our students.

"In fact, some Zonal Inspectorate Education Officers, (ZIE), our PS; inspector General of  Education have been disguising in schools with money to pay such illegal fees when there is a red flag that; in this school, they are collecting illegal fee, I think I can mention two or three of such.

“There was a radio programme some time ago that they were collecting illegal fees in one of the secondary schools in Iseyin, They tagged the fee as 'IFINKO', so we quickly called the PS, IGE in charge of that zone.

'He conducted a search, and he discovered that nothing of such happened.

“There was another incident in IDO, we were trying to at least get one or two as a scapegoat, until now, we are unable to get a result.

“We are not resting on our oars because we have stumbled on one, and we are seriously working to unravel the truth of the matter, if we can get it, if that information is correct, that particular teacher will definitely be queried and is going to face the panel, so, all our teachers should be very careful.

To the parents, they should know that education is free in Oyo state, no school, no head of school should demand a dime.

They should not pay them, when such happened they should, please contact the Ministry of Education in

Oyo state. If they cannot come over, we have all our LIEs (Local inspector of Education, we have our PS: Inspector General of Education.

“ They should please contact them, and they should let us know.

“ We have been carrying out what I called sting operation, we are going to schools to find out what type of fee or levy they are collecting from students.

We've not been able to get so much of them, but In the public domain, we are hearing rumors, we are receiving WhatsApp messages, but we have not been able to at least get one or two of them.

'We are still looking for them, you too can help us, if you know of any school, just get in touch with us.
