I've what it takes to defeat PDP in 2027 - Alao

A frontline chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former gubernatorial candidate in Oyo State, Engineer Oyedele Hakeem Alao (Allow Alao) in this interview speaks on his gubernatorial aspiration come 2027 and while President Bola Tinubu will be elected for second term. Excerpts :

Question : With growing threats from the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) to unseat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.  Do you see him having more votes in the next election in the state coupled with the fact that the President Tinubu had 449,884 votes in Oyo State during the 2023 presidential election?

Alao : The chances of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) or any opposition coalition unseating APC at both the national and state levels are highly unlikely. The reason is that the current ADC coalition comprises politicians whose track records have not inspired confidence among voters. Many are seen as being out of touch with the real needs of Nigerians, thereby reducing their relevance.

And to come to Oyo State, the ongoing synergy, alignments, and realignments within the APC point towards a strengthened support base for President Tinubu. With internal disputes resolved and the unity of the party restored, President Tinubu will not only retain but surpass the 449,884 votes he secured in the last election. I have no doubt in my mind that the improved coordination in APC’s campaign machinery and growing grassroots support will yield a stronger electoral mandate in 2027.

Question : Why do you think the APC would reclaim the state from PDP in 2027 despite Governor Seyi Makinde's influence and power?

Alao : Today, the All Progressives Congress (APC) stands as the most formidable opposition in the  political landscape of Oyo State. Governor Seyi  Makinde who has been in power for more than six years now has failed the people of Oyo State. As a governor, he has failed to deliver impactful policies that truly benefit the everyday people of the state. Even amid widespread economic hardship, his administration has been oscillating between mismanagement and misplaced priorities, neglecting critical areas that would otherwise uplift the masses.

Also, you will observe that in recent times, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has of recent experienced internal decline, with its influence waning not only in Oyo State but nationwide. Many PDP members are defecting to the APC, a trend that will continue as the next election approaches. And APC in Oyo State, having resolved previous internal divisions that affected its past performance, is now unified and better positioned to win back the state. Even public sentiment reflects growing dissatisfaction with the current leadership in the state, which strengthens the prospects of the APC in 2027.

Question: What do you have that will make you defeat the ruling PDP in the state should APC give you the gubernatorial ticket come 2027?

Alao : I am guided by deep faith in Almighty God and motivated by a passion for genuine service to the people, especially the underprivileged. My commitment to transforming Oyo State is rooted in firsthand experience, having travelled extensively across its towns and villages. This has given me a clear understanding of the challenges faced by our citizens.

My carefully developed manifesto addresses critical sectors that include education, health, agriculture, security, and others. Rather than treating these challenges as isolated problems, I recognize their interconnected nature and have developed innovative solutions for each. My approach emphasizes inclusive policymaking by  ensuring that all voices are heard; practical, locally-driven solutions tailored to Oyo State’s unique context; transparent governance to build and maintain public trust and youth empowerment and economic revitalization with a strong focus on both.

As an engineer by profession, I have worked in the private sector of the oil and gas industry since 1993, holding various roles—including Project Engineer, Facilities Engineer, and Project Manager—all within Nigeria before moving abroad.

In January 2004, I secured employment with the internationally acclaimed engineering consultants, Tebodin and Partners, in the Sultanate of Oman, where I was seconded to Petroleum Development of Oman as Projects Construction Coordinator. Due to my strong performance as a seconded staff member, I was formally recruited by Petroleum Development of Oman in November 2006 as a Senior Contract Analyst to manage the administration of two major service contracts totaling $1.08 billion. I also served as secretary to the Governance Board of these two contracts until 2011.

Later, I was elevated to the position of Company Representative, managing a $2 billion Off Plot Delivery Service Contract. In 2015, I was promoted to Head, Contract Services, overseeing eight service contracts with a combined value exceeding $4.5 billion. In this role, I managed four main sections: contract administration, planning, costing, and In-Country Value. In 2019, I was reassigned as Lead Compliance Engineer to support departmental contract holders, while concurrently serving as Contract Holder for the Off Plot contract.

I concluded my service with Petroleum Development of Oman after eighteen years. In 2023, based on my experience and financial standing, I was invited to join the group of Arab investors—Al Jadeed International Investment—which has diverse portfolios spanning finance, oil and gas, energy, and retail supermarket chains. As part of my commitment to the group, I was appointed Investment Adviser for Nigeria and other West African countries and lately announced as Vice President ' Investment African Operations'

I firmly believe that the path to both state and national development lies in a well-thought-out program of equal and sustainable development, focusing on infrastructural development, human capacity development, youth empowerment, job creation, employment generation, mechanized agriculture, industrialization (including agro-based industries), and the judicious exploitation and commercialization of natural resources.

Given the fact that I was an Alliance for Democracy (AD) gubernatorial candidate in 2019 and a gubernatorial aspirant in APC  in 2023 and with the support of the APC leadership, youth and women fold, I am confident in my ability to defeat the PDP and lead Oyo State into an era of sustainable growth, real progress in 2027 and a reclaim of pacesetter glory.

VIDEO; Oyo CPS on Monday - Makinde is intentional, wants beautiful things for the people, says Pams Travels CEO, Mustapha

Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has been described as an intentional leader who wants beautiful things for the people of the state.

This was the submission of Mrs Olanike Mustapha, Chief Executive Officer of Pams Travels & Tours Limited, during an interview with The People’s Verdict.

She said, “I need to commend our GSM, Governor Seyi Makinde, for the great work he has started doing in Oyo State, because the work is ongoing. For example, I live at Apete and for a long time, where I live in particular, there is this bridge that had been giving us a lot of trouble. The governor came there and fixed it. Now, Apete people are happy because the road is motorable. We can use the road, we can sleep, we can rest because we have a better road. In general in Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has been very helpful and supportive. We can see the infrastructural development, we can see work ongoing everywhere; not just patching roads, we can see massive works that are sustainable. So, I give kudos to our governor, he is working.”

Talking about the specific ways the governor has impacted on the lives of residents of Oyo State, Mrs Mustapha, who is also the Coordinator of Women in Tourism Business, Oyo State Chapter, narrowed it down to the good road network.

She said, “Good road network really impacts the welfare of citizens. In the villages, now they have motorable roads that they can use to convey farm produce to the town to sell and make their money. So, when you talk about infrastructure, the governor is really doing a great work.

“Then, we have the night life. I am into tourism and tourism has to do with night life; we have people going to clubs, we have people selling at night in different places. If we talk about Ring Road, if we talk about Bodija, we see light coming up at night and it would just be like noonday and people can go about their business. That is adding more value with more revenues being generated.”

Mrs Mustapha also submitted that the economy has greatly improved under Makinde.

Her words: “The economy has greatly improved. A lot of people who are working in Lagos have started building houses in Ibadan. We even see people coming on Fridays to Ibadan to just come and rest; they want to leave the noisy places where the traffic is always heavy. Because Ibadan is relatively peaceful, people can come to Ibadan to rest. When they rest, they buy things, the sellers get money and revenues are being generated. The economy has greatly improved. So, generally we can say that the economy, our GDP has greatly improved compared to what it used to be in the past.”

For the Pams Travel chief executive, the most outstanding of Governor Makinde’s projects are the roads.

She said, “Two of our vehicles got spoilt on the way to our house; one during the rain, the other one because the road was very bad. Today, we don’t have such experience. Our cars are in good conditions because the roads are good. I love it when I can drive from one point to another without potholes. We see the massive works being done by Governor Makinde, they are not ordinary, they are extraordinary. So, you see a governor with intentionality, you see a governor that appreciates beautiful things and he is not just thinking about it for himself, he wants the populace to enjoy these things. That is what Governor Makinde is doing.”

On how the policies emplaced by the Makinde administration have helped the tourism sector, Mrs Mustapha said, “I can say thank you to our governor. Before he came in, we had Information, Culture and Tourism as one ministry. But when he came in, he separated the Ministry of Tourism and Culture. And we have a very vibrant Commissioner that is hardworking and understands culture and tourism. Now, we have different festivals, we have different summits coming up.

“As I am talking now, the upgrading of the Ibadan airport to international standards is ongoing because the governor values what the airport can do. We can have a dry port where things are conveyed to Ibadan. In fact, we can travel out without necessarily going to Lagos. I live in Ibadan, so I can do London-Ibadan. The governor has really impacted our ministry and he is working everyday to improve it. He has a new agenda and he is bringing in investors to come and do it. It is for the whole of Oyo State and it has been divided into five geo-political zones. It is a well-structured thing and it will not just be done haphazardly. Then, sustainability is being built into this. So, investors should come to Oyo State. This is a good soil to sow, when you sow your seed, it is going to germinate and you’re going to have your returns on investment, I can assure you.”

She described the governor as a very fantastic man who “is very sound. He is a well-exposed man. He loves beautiful things. He listens to the people, he loves the people and he is serving with the whole of his being. God bless Seyi Makinde for us.”

Real Reason Vice-President Kashim Shettima Should Resign Now - Satguru Maharaj Ji

As Vice President Kashim Shettima's comment on the unconstitutionality of the Federal Government's emergency rule on Rivers escalates, the Founder of One Love Family and Living Perfect Master, Satguru Maharaj Ji has called for his resignation.

Recall, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had foisted a state of emergency on the oil-rich Rivers on March 18, 2025, following a protracted political impasse between two gladiators in the state, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike and Sir Siminilayi Joseph Fubara.

Consequently, Tinubu suspended democratic governance in the state and sent Governor Fubara, his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu, and the 32-member legislature parking for an initial six months period.

To avoid a vacuum, the president appointed Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ekwe Ibas, Rtd, a former Chief of Naval Staff, as the sole administrator of the state.

But on Thursday, 10 July, 2025,  Shettima, at a book launch in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, seemingly declared that the president did not have the constitutional authority to suspend a Councillor, not to talk of a sitting state governor.

Maharaj Ji reiterated that as the Vice President to Tinubu, he ought to be defending whatever his boss, President Tinubu says but because of the ethnic mentality “pay the Southerner money and control their attitude” that has always been the thinking of the Northern leaders who believed Presidency is their sole right, has been going against him in recent times.

According to Maharaj Ji, the President hinged his decision on Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution, saying he could not continue to watch the political situation in the state escalate without taking any measures.

He stated that the President had received security reports of “disturbing incidents of vandalism of pipelines by some militants without the governor taking any action to curtail them.”

"Section 305 of the Nigerian constitution interprets a state of emergency as a situation of “national danger, disaster or terrorist attacks in which a government suspends normal constitutional procedures to regain control.”

"A state of emergency allows the president to immediately make any desired regulations to secure public order and safety.

"The unfolding insecurity, he warned, if left unchecked, can precipitate anarchy and a collapse of law and order.

Maharaj ji posited that for President Tinubu to seal his move as required by the constitution, he had written separate letters to the upper and lower chambers, seeking approval for the imposition of his emergency rule in Rivers State.

"Tinubu’s decision comes amid escalating political chaos in the state involving Governor Fubara against his predecessor and current Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, as well as pro-Wikelawmakers.

He said: "Tinubu stated in his broadcast that he is “greatly disturbed” by the political situation in Rivers State, adding that he has “watched with concern the development with the hope that the parties involved would allow good sense to prevail at the soonest, but all that hope burned out without any solution to the crisis.”

"Tinubu also referenced the Fubara’s controversial demolition of the state House of Assembly in December 2023, which, according to Tinubu, had left the state without a functioning legislature for over 14 months.

He stated; “I have made personal interventions between the contending parties for a peaceful resolution of the crisis, but my efforts have been largely ignored by the parties to the crisis. I am also aware that many well-meaning Nigerians, Leaders of thought and Patriotic groups have also intervened at various times with the best of intentions to resolve the matter, but all their efforts were also to no avail. Still, I thank them.

"He noted that with the crisis persisting, the state has been “at a standstill” since the crisis started, with the people of the state not being able to have “access to the dividends of democracy.”

“A government cannot be said to exist without one of the three arms that make up the government of a state under the 1999 Constitution as amended. In this case the head of the executive arm of the government has chosen to collapse the legislature to enable him to govern without the legislature as a despot. As it is there is no government in Rivers State.”

"On February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court, in a judgement in respect of about eight consolidated appeals concerning the political crisis in Rivers State, based on several grave unconstitutional acts and disregard of rule of law that have been committed by the Governor of Rivers State as shown by the evidence before it pronounced in very clear terms:

Maharraj Ji defended the suspension, arguing, “Most people don’t understand what Tinubu did in Rivers State for peace. The Governor, deputy, and lawmakers are all suspended. So, there are no winners here before you start threatening Tinubu.”

"Tinubu actually saved Fubara from being uprooted by the 27 legislators of the sate through impeachment. If not for the timely intervention of Tinubu, Fubara would have kissed his Governorship good bye.

"Tinubu didn't remove Fubara. He only created a space to ease tension. Fubara openly appreciated such a kind gesture from Tinubu which has brought progress to Rivers. Obasanjo couldn't remove Tinubu despite all attacks by Obasanjo to distablize his government in Lagos, because Tinubu was and still an active politician who understands the plights of the people and the political terrain.

"Fiscal Federalism has started with the Tax Reforms already passed. Now population is not the main yardstick to measure Federal Government  resource allocation but productivity.

"The devious games and criminal plans of Northern politicians against Nigeria's progress and existence are all known and it is on the basis of My unwavering Divine commitment to protect and salvage Nigeria from their satanic agenda, as co-scripted and approved by Britain and Saudi Arabia, both being their principal external cohorts, that I have allowed Nigeria to evolve in a way that appears to them as evidence of thier invincibility. Evolution as against revolution stands-out as the appropriate route to guide booty-trapped Nigeria through to its destined shore of grace and glory. The option of revolution plays straight into the Annihilation Plan of the Northern political oligarchy against Nigeria!

"As we enter the second half of the 1st tenure of 8years rule by the Grace of Maharaj Ji  of President Bola Tinubu's administration, it is time to straighten up things  for Nigerians to know that we cannot sit down and watch those touts,  who are bent in destroying this God given President's administration," He maintained.

"The quest for a united and prosperous Nigeria is a patriotic strive that requires the hardwork of patriots. Public officers appointed or elected on the premise of religious sentiments cannot but be loyal to the parochial and troublesome sentiments that got them the offices they occupy. This has been a major weakness of our country's tasking evolution so far.

In the light of the above, it is highly imperative for Shettima to resign now due to his lack of faith in our President by global standards to enable the government operate at full capacity, because political chicanery and debauchery of any type at this crucial state of this great nation should not be allowed.

By the special Grace of Maharaj Ji, we would like to seize this golden opportunity to inform all the workers, students, academicians, legal experts to come to terms with the above explanation as enough to set us on the path of good governance for positive results now that we have a dedicated, devoted and experienced nationalist with global fervour grandeur and flavor attractive enough to set our economy to recover with the renewed Hope policy.

We can't end without calling on legal luminaries like Sagay, Mike Osekome, Afe Babalola including the Patriots etc., who are trying to compare the blowing up of the state House of Assembly, a criminal act, with the application of the letter 305 of the Constitution without realizing that, should Fubara be brought to court of law, they would be liable since as public officers, the Constitution requires that they are to quench the fire of treason, anarchy and insecurity perpetrated by Fubara instead of exacerbating it.

The President is hale and hearty and strong like African Bull and whosoever is not happy about it should travel and ask God in heaven to intervene through the ballot not heat the polity as well as incite a revolution which could be seen as another attempt to weaponise hatred which the law is there to deal with such Saboteurs. To be forwarned is to be forewarned.

Nigeria, Nigerians and the blacks all over the world would make an impressive victory through President Tinubu.

Long Live President Tinubu!

Long Live Federal Republic of Nigeria.!!

My Love and Blessings

We Will Reposition Cybercrime, Digital Insecurity - MHR, Odidiomo

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, on Thursday, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s resolve to reposition Nigeria’s legal framework to meet the growing complexities of cybercrime and digital insecurity.

Speaking during the closing session of a Technical Meeting on Improving the Legal Framework for Cybercrime, held at Hearing Room 022, Senate New Building, National Assembly, Abuja, Hon. Olajide said the nation stands at a critical juncture in its digital evolution, one that demands urgent, inclusive and forward looking legal reforms.

The event, organised through a strategic collaboration between the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Global Programme on Cybercrime, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Justice, brought together key policymakers, security stakeholders, technocrats and civil society actors to chart a new course for Nigeria’s cybersecurity governance.

According to the federal lawmaker, “Today, we have collectively reaffirmed the reality that cybercrime is no longer just a technical issue. It is a legal, economic, social and national security concern that requires urgent, informed and coordinated action.”

He stressed that cyber threats such as AI-generated disinformation, crypto-enabled fraud, data privacy violations and cross border cyber terrorism pose a clear and undeniable danger to Nigeria’s security, economy and democratic institutions. He noted that the current legal frameworks, particularly the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act of 2015, are no longer adequate to address emerging realities.

“There is a pressing need to update, harmonise and future proof our laws in line with international conventions such as the Budapest Convention and the Malabo Convention,” Hon. Olajide stated. He maintained that beyond drafting new laws, Nigeria must also invest in the enforcement mechanisms, including digital forensics, training, infrastructure and cross border cooperation, to give teeth to such legal reforms.

While commending the deliberations and presentations made during the one day session, the lawmaker reiterated the commitment of the House of Representatives committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity to ensuring that legislative instruments are not only technologically responsive but also rooted in human rights, transparency and digital inclusion.

The meeting is part of ongoing efforts to fortify Nigeria’s institutional and legal capacity to prevent, investigate and prosecute cybercrime, while aligning with global standards and best practices.

We Will Continue to Provide Legal Frame Work for Digital Economy, E- Governance - MHR, Odidiomo

The lawmaker representing Ibadan Northwest/Ibadan Southwest federal constituency of Oyo state, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, on Tuesday read for the second time, a bill seeking to provide a legal framework for the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy and the institutionalisation of e-governance.

Presenting the bill during plenary, Hon. Olajide, who is the Chairman of the House Committee on Digital Information, Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, said the proposed legislation was timely and critical to repositioning Nigeria in the global digital landscape.

According to him, the bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Provide Legal Framework for the Enhancement and Growth of Digital Economy and E-Governance in Nigeria and for Related Matters, 2025”, is aimed at promoting efficiency, innovation, service delivery and transparency across all levels of government.

Hon. Olajide explained that the bill which consists of 14 parts and 63 sections, covering key areas such as electronic transactions, digital payments, e-commerce, government data preservation, digital trust certification and the integration of ICT in public institutions is a blueprint for modern governance, which will in turn provide the legal and institutional backing to digitize public services, reduce waste and promote inclusive access to digital opportunities.

He noted that Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) will be mandated to establish ICT units, digitize their services, implement cybersecurity protocols and report annually on their progress, ensuring accountability and sustainability.

Citing economic data, the two term P.D.P lawmaker said Nigeria’s digital economy currently contributes between 16 - 18 per cent to the national GDP. He projected that with proper legal backing, the figure could rise to 22 per cent by 2030.

Olajide maintained that the cost implication of the bill’s implementation, remains a necessary investment in national development and a pathway to eliminating bureaucratic inefficiencies and corruption through technology driven systems, disclosing that the bill is designed to expand the country's digital economy, empower youths and reposition Nigeria as a serious player in the fourth industrial revolution.

ONLINE HARM PROTECTION BILL WILL REFLECT REALITIES OF NIGERIANS - MHR, ODIDIOMO

The Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Digital Information, Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, has declared that Nigeria must urgently adopt a comprehensive and inclusive legal framework to tackle the rising tide of harmful online content threatening the country’s digital landscape.

Hon. Olajide made the call in Abuja while addressing stakeholders at a high level one day workshop organised jointly by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Advocacy for Policy and Innovation (API), focused on advancing dialogue around the draft Online Harm Protection (OHP) Bill.

The workshop brought together representatives from government agencies, civil society, the tech ecosystem, academia and legal practitioners to deliberate on the institutionalisation of a multi stakeholder approach in the fight against online abuse, cyberbullying, misinformation and digital exploitation.

Olajide, who represents Ibadan North-west/Ibadan South-west federal constituency of Oyo state, noted that the Bill was long overdue, stressing that Nigeria’s digital space has remained largely unregulated in the face of rising threats and abuses.

“We cannot pretend that these threats don’t exist. Every day, young people, women and even government institutions suffer damages due to misinformation, cyberbullying, identity theft and the spread of harmful content online. The time to act is now, and it must be through a process that is inclusive, open and consultative,” Olajide said.

The lawmaker further declared that the Bill, when passed, would not only address harmful online behaviours but also ensure that Nigeria aligns with global best practices in digital governance.

He disclosed that the draft was developed through a transparent multi-stakeholder steering committee that emerged from the December 2024 White Paper on Online Harm Protection, which outlined guiding principles and policy direction for regulating online safety in the country.

“We want this Bill to reflect the realities of Nigerians. It is not about censorship, but protection. It is about building a resilient, safe, and inclusive digital space where rights are respected and responsibilities are clearly defined,” Olajide noted.

VIDEO; Oyo CPS on Monday - Makinde is a transformative leader – Popoola, ZEnergy Tour CEO

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has been described as a transformative leader because of his vision, innovation and inclusive governance style, all of which have brought about unprecedented development in the state.

Expressing this view in an interview with The People’s Verdict, Comrade Zainab Popoola, Chief Executive Officer of ZEnergy Tours, noted that “My governor is a transformative leader. You can see that Oyo State is already becoming one of the best in Nigeria, if not number one as we speak. Governor Seyi Makinde is a transformative leader and I pray the Almighty God will give him more strength.”

Popoola, who is an advocate of inclusivity, also said: “My governor is a youth-friendly governor. He is someone that cares about the masses. Governor Seyi Makinde promotes youth-centered policies and youth empowerment. My governor is actually doing amazing work in this regard.”

She added, “My governor has been supporting the aspirations of young people through youth-centered policies and by putting young people in positions of authority. We have the first youth ever to become a commissioner in Oyo State at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. This office has created a room for young people to see themselves as close to the executive arm of government. Young people can easily walk to the commissioner and say, ‘I have this idea.’”

Talking about how the governor has supported youths in Oyo State, the ZEnergy Tour boss said, “The one that is close to me is the YEAP (Youth Empowerment in Agriculture Programme). That programme is a great opportunity for people to learn about agribusiness and to practise it. As a young person, if you are passionate about agriculture, the governor has provided training opportunities and at the same time empowerment programme for youths to leverage all the skills they have acquired over the years. Through the SAfER (Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery) programme, the governor was able to set up a committee with specific focus on food security. Through this committee, the governor was able to provide loans for youths that had been trained in agribusiness.

Popoola, who plays in the tourism sector in Oyo State, said: “Oyo State is actually one of the best tourism states in Nigeria. You can see that there is a lot of growing opportunities and there is a lot of growing destinations and that is all thanks to our governor, His Excellency Seyi Makinde. In his first term in office, was able to fix a lot of infrastructure centered on promoting tourism destinations. In Ibadan, for instance, we have a newly opened Olubadan Palace. If you are visiting Ibadan and you want to get yourself immersed in the cultural heritage of the city, you go to the palace, you get to learn about the history of Ibadan, and how the city was founded during the time of Lagelu up to the 44th Olubadan that will be inaugurated very soon.

“If you want to explore places outside Ibadan, the world’s natural suspended lake is located here in Oyo State as well as other great sites. Our governor has done a lot in making sure that the ministry (Culture and Tourism) is a working ministry, the infrastructure is excellent, and the security from the Nigeria Police Force to Amotekun Corps is excellent. He has done well in making sure that tourism in Oyo State is one of the best.”

Talking about the Seyi Makinde administration, Comrade Popoola said “He is people-focused. Governor Makinde has done excellently well in security, education, technology, tourism development and so many other sectors.”

Speaking during the inaugural Council meeting held at the College’s Conference room, Hon. He noted, with appreciation, the remarkable achievements made in the face of financial constraints and infrastructural deficits.

She appealed to His  Excellency to expedite the signing of the new College Bill, which was passed by the Oyo State House of Assembly in March, 2025 into Law,

She informed the Governing Council that the 2025/2026 admission process is ongoing, with the second batch of the   Entrance Examinations scheduled for the 30th and 31st of July at the College’s ICT Centre. She encouraged prospective students to apply online via www.oyschst.edu.ng.

She also advised JAMB candidates, who chose the institution as their first choice to register for the post UTME and those who would like to cross over to the College to apply for a change of institution to the College and change of course to their preferred choice.

After the deliberations, the Governing Council Chairman and the other members, accompanied by the Principal Officers, toured the College premises to inspect the available facilities.

It will be recalled that Hon. Babatunde Olaniyan and other members of the Governing Council were officially inaugurated by Governor Seyi Makinde on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Oyo CPS on Monday - Sports have improved under Makinde, says Adepoju, former 3SC General Manager

Nigeria’s ex-international footballer and a former General Manager of the Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC), Mr Mutiu Adepoju, has rated Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, highly in the area of sports development.

Adepoju, in an interview with The People’s Verdict, said sporting activities have witnessed a rebirth in the state on Makinde’s watch.

Going into specifics, he said: “In the past, Team Oyo State was not really doing well in National Sports Festival. But in the last two editions of the National Sports Festival, they did quite well. In the last one, we were fifth or sixth and our athletes won so many medals, which is good. We can do better but we are not doing badly.”

He also talked about the 3SC, which was playing at the Nigerian National League (the nation’s second division side), before the advent of Makinde’s administration but is now a strong force in Nigeria Premier Football League.

Adepoju, who played for Shooting Stars in 1988, said: “3SC has fared well under Governor Makinde. Two seasons ago, they narrowly missed being on the continent. Last season, they started very well but they got it wrong at some point. That happens sometimes. But I believe that 3SC has done very well under Governor Seyi Makinde. I have never heard of funds not getting to them and all that.”

On what the governor has done to improve sports development in Oyo State, the one popularly called ‘Headmaster’ said: “First, I will talk about the rehabilitation of stadia in Oyo State. I am aware of the rehabilitation of Lekan Salami Sports Complex, which I was part of its inauguration. I think the stadium is top notch.

The stadium is of international standards. The facility is one of the best we have around. Then there are other stadia too, like Olubadan Stadium, which have been upgraded. All of these have improved sports in the state.”

Talking about grassroots sports development, Adepoju said, “There has been a change, although it can get better because you can never have enough of good things. We just have to continue the development. You can’t say that you have everything but in that aspect, he has tried but things can still get better.”

The former 3SC gaffer also praised Makinde for approving the allocation of plots of land to the Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) squad that won the National League and WAFU Cup in 1998, saying he fulfilled a 28-year-old promise which previous administrations had ignored.

Recall that following the outstanding performance of the Shooting Stars which earned them both the national and sub-regional titles in 1998, the then Military Administrator of the state, CP Amen Oyakhire, promised to reward the victorious team with money and land. But the squad and the handlers never got the land until Governor Makinde broke the jinx a couple of weeks ago.

According to Adepoju, “We have to thank Governor Makinde for that. It’s been 28 years. We have to acknowledge what he has done and say ‘thank you’ to him. I am sure that the players that are involved are going to be very grateful to the governor.”

He also lauded the governor for his infrastructure intervention.

The former Real Sociedad midfielder said, “The administration of Makinde has been good; it has been positive. I have seen what has been happening. I have seen roads being constructed; I have seen many facilities coming up. So, the administration is a positive one.”

Senate Begins Deliberation on Energy Sector Reform Bill — Akintunde, Abaribe, Yayi, Others Offer Solutions

The Nigerian Senate has commenced deliberations on the Energy Sector Reform Bill, which was presented for first reading during Tuesday’s plenary session. The bill, sponsored by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, triggered robust discussions among lawmakers, particularly those with strong backgrounds in the energy sector.

Several senators made insightful contributions on the urgent need to reform Nigeria’s energy landscape to reflect global best practices and address the persistent inefficiencies plaguing the sector.

Notably, Senator Yunus Akintunde, representing Oyo Central Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South West Development Commission, offered a critical perspective. A PhD holder in Energy Studies with vast international exposure, Senator Akintunde highlighted deep-seated challenges in the management and financing of Nigeria’s energy sector.

He called for a comprehensive assessment of the bill, which among other proposals, addresses the removal of electricity subsidies, introduces stringent penalties for vandalism and corruption, and calls for adequate government funding to stabilize and grow the sector.

Senator Akintunde decried the current business practices of Distribution Companies (DisCos) and Generation Companies (GenCos), citing the misuse of public funds in their operations. He noted a disturbing trend where DisCos rely on government allocations to procure equipment such as transformers and wires for community use, only to lay claim to ownership of these assets once they are energized.

> “That is abnormal and tantamount to the misuse of public resources to enrich private monopolies. As we reform the energy sector, we must eliminate such practices and commit to providing sustainable and clean energy for Nigerians,” Akintunde stated.

He also opposed the bill’s position on subsidy removal, emphasizing the global precedent where developed nations subsidize electricity to foster economic growth.

> “I do not agree with the proposed removal of electricity subsidies. In fact, it is the global standard—as seen in the US, UK, and other advanced economies—to subsidize energy for development. Nigeria should not be an exception,” he added.

It will be recalled that Senator Akintunde had earlier sponsored a motion in the early days of the 10th Senate opposing a proposed hike in electricity tariffs, coming just months after the removal of fuel subsidies by the Federal Government.

Also contributing, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) raised alarm over the underfunding of the sector and its ballooning debt profile, which he said had reached unsustainable levels. He warned that the sector’s inefficiencies pose a grave risk to Nigeria’s economic growth and energy security.

Nigeria, despite its abundant natural resources, continues to rank among the least performing countries in electricity generation and distribution globally. The energy sector’s reform remains pivotal to achieving sustainable development and industrial competitiveness.

The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the Energy Sector Reform Bill is refined to reflect the will of the people. Lawmakers pledged that the final version of the bill will protect the interests of Nigerian citizens, in line with their mandate to represent and defend public interest.

The ongoing energy reform efforts align with President Bola Tinubu’s administration's broader economic reform agenda, aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s economy and accelerating national infrastructure development.

CYBERSECURITY: We Will Build a Resilient Digital Future - MHR, Odidiomo

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Digital, Information Communication Technology and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Dhikrullahi Stanley Olajide, has issued a clarion call for the urgent overhaul of Nigeria’s digital protection laws and frameworks, describing cybersecurity as “a matter of national survival.”

Hon. Olajide, made the call while delivering a goodwill message at the opening ceremony of the maiden National Cybersecurity Conference 2025, held at the Abuja Continental Hotel.

The federal lawmaker, who represents Ibadan North-West/Ibadan South-West Federal Constituency of Oyo state, revealed that the National Assembly is already working on proactive legislative reviews to match the fast evolving digital terrain and to empower institutions with the tools required to anticipate and respond to complex cyber risks while also stressing the need for collaborative synergy among government institutions, the private sector, civil society and academia to proactively combat emerging cyber threats.

He outlined the National Assembly’s readiness to support robust legislative actions aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s digital security infrastructure.

“Our laws, institutions and frameworks must evolve as rapidly as the threats confronting us.

“We must prioritise not only the prevention of cybercrimes but also the creation of a digitally secure ecosystem that inspires trust.”

“Together, we can build a secure digital environment that promotes innovation, protects national assets and safeguard the rights and privacy of all Nigerians,” he said.

Olajide assured stakeholders present at the conference of the unwavering commitment of the 10th National Assembly, particularly the House Committee on Digital, ICT and Cybersecurity, to provide legislative backing to all national cybersecurity policies, especially those that foster innovation, digital inclusion and sustainable development.

“Cyber threats are no longer speculative; they are real, dynamic and increasingly sophisticated,” Olajide warned. “Cybersecurity today is not merely a technical issue, it is a national security imperative, an economic lifeline and a critical citizen protection responsibility.”

Hon. Adedeji Olajide commended the Director General of NITDA, Mr. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, and his team for their foresight in convening what he described as a “landmark event” in Nigeria’s march toward a secure digital economy.

The National Cybersecurity conference, organised by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), with the theme, “Building a Resilient Digital Future,” had in attendance, high level stakeholders from across the digital and security spectrum and is expected to produce a national communiqué that will shape Nigeria’s digital security architecture and policy priorities in the years ahead.

VIDEO: Makinde is Compassionate, Has a Heart for people, says Bodija Residents Association Chairman, Bamgbose

Pastor Muyiwa Bamgbose, Chairman of Bodija Estate Residents Association (BERA), has described Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, as a compassionate leader who has a heart for the people.

Bamgbose, who spoke against the backdrop of the January 16, 2024 explosion which rocked Bodija in Ibadan and the response of Oyo State Government to the calamity in an interview with The People’s Verdict, said many states in the country have a lot to learn about emergency management from Oyo State.

He said, “The immediate response of Governor ‘Seyi Makinde to the Bodija explosion is indeed commendable. Things similar to that happen elsewhere and it takes their governor about two days to get there. We appreciate the fact that the governor showed up that night.

“The thing happened after 7pm, and around 10pm the governor was at the scene, apart from the fact that there were some of his aides that got there within the hour, how they did it we don’t know. So, it is commendable. It is not just a matter of proximity; it is a matter of the heart. There could be reasons not to come there.

“At the time it happened, for a number of hours no one was sure what happened. There were all kinds of speculations and theories; some said a petrol station had exploded, some said it was a gas station, some said it was a building or a mall that came down. So, there were different theories. With that level of uncertainty, for the number one man in the state to visit the scene of an occurrence like that, I believe it is commendable.”

Bamgbose added, “The first responders, the security people were there. I tell you that night, there could have been pilfering, breaking into houses, plundering. There were indeed people that came around who wanted to attempt such. So, security was put in place.

The governor went on air to appeal to hospitals to take people and treat them that the government would be responsible, he also appealed to hotels to accommodate people that the government would be responsible. It was commendable that people got adequate attention; they got care, they could sleep somewhere. That night if anybody couldn’t get a house to sleep, they could get into a hotel and sleep.”

The Bodija Estate Residents Association chairman noted that with the handling of the explosion and its aftermath, Oyo State had set a template for emergency management in the country.

He said, “Many other states need to come and study what happened in Oyo State and how we tracked it. I heard one man in the bomb disposal squad saying he was surprised at the level of casualty. He thought that they would be carrying corpses with wheel barrows. He was surprised that we could count the number of people that died.”

Pastor Bamgbose, a former President of Junior Chamber International Nigeria, added: “I believe that the country can learn from the Pacesetter State, as we call ourselves in Oyo State, that emergency management is something that needs to be improved upon. The country has a lot to learn from Oyo State. You find out that what was done in Oyo State is far more comfortable, it is also more effective. There was no complaint of neglect or favouritism like it usually happens when you have a mass emergency like this.”

Bamgbose, while expressing the appreciation of the victims to Governor Makinde and the state government for the support given those affected by the explosion, said: “As we speak, majority of the people have got support. It’s done in stages, in groups. The good thing is that every day, somebody calls to say ‘I have got my own money’, which is encouraging.

“On a general note, the governor means well for the people; he has a heart for the people. As we say in Yoruba, ile oba t’ojo, ewa lo bukun. So, some people eventually have a better place. A vast majority of the people appreciate what the government has done for them.”

Providing an update on the Governor’s promise to fix Bodija roads, Bamgbose said, “The road construction is ongoing now. If you drive round Bodija, you will see the construction team at work. They did the Awolowo and Osuntokun first; they are now getting into the inner roads. The roads are being done with drainage. So, that is likely going to prolong their life.”

Pastor Bamgbose added, “The governor is compassionate. What we see, not just in this case but in other cases, is someone who feels for people and acts based on what he feels for the people. I know the hurdles we had to cross in our committee. If the governor didn’t step in or get involved or do some things about it, I know we could still have been dragging on a number of issues. I know he has a heart for people. You can see how salaries are paid, so he doesn’t want people to suffer. At a point in time, we were told the committee had to finish its work because the governor wanted it done quickly so that people could pick up their lives again. So, he is compassionate.”
