Alao tasks youths to shelve hunger protest

As youths across the country prepare to hold a nationwide protest starting from Thursday, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Engineer Oyedele Hakeem Alao (Allow Alao), has urged them to shelve the idea and tow the path of dialogue with the administration of President Bola Tinubu.

Alao in a statement by his Media Office, who acknowledged that Nigerians are going through difficult times, however cautioned that embarking on protest to register grievances could be counter-productive as it could be hijacked by unscrupulous elements.

While going down memory lane, he disclosed that as a students union activist during his days at the University of Lagos, he would never subscribe to any form of protest given his experience during the administration of President Ibrahim Babangida, noting that the protest he participated in went awry.

According to him, "In 1989, as a member of the Socialist Youth group and an executive member of the University of Lagos Students Unions, I was one of the students that planned the protest in El kanemi Hall during the popular "IBB MUST GO" era. It was an issue of inflation and hunger that drove the protest. It started very well on that day but by 3 pm miscreants and hooligans had took over and it was disaster with buildings and shops burnt, lives lost and unfortunately it spread to other states as students of other schools also took to the street. It was a week of rage, violence and destruction. Indeed, I will never forget that week."

He added that the experience of Nigerians during the EndSARS protest could not be forgotten in a hurry, stating that the protest started peacefully but later turned to bloody with attendant consequences of infrastructure burnt and people losing their means of livelihood.

On high cost of foodstuff which is part of what is fueling the protest, the Asiwaju of Irokoland put the blame on the greed in the society, stating that it is unexplainable to have a trader purchased food items in the Northern part of the country at a lower price and moved to Ibadan or Lagos to sell at exorbitant price all because of transport cost.

"And the traders are talking about transport cost. What transport cost? How can a basket of tomato that cost N5,000 in Jos and Minna cost N40, 000 in Ibadan and Lagos?", he lamented.

Alao who expressed confidence in the ability of President Tinubu to make life better for the masses in the country, however urged the President to set up price control board to monitor prices of food stuff across the country, adding that government can also assist food marketers to convey their purchases through train from the North to the Southwest and other areas of the Southern part of the country.

He nevertheless insisted that a hungry man is an angry man, enjoining the Federal Government to stop given palliatives but rather intervene in the prices of foods stuffs, stating that palliatives only reach few people and not the entire populace.

"I want to appeal to our youths not to participate in the planned protest because it can be hijacked by hoodlums who can turn it to bloody one by taking the advantage to destroy public assets and the consequences of this will add salt to injury. I am speaking from experience as a students union activist", Alao stated.

Uniplan C.E.O, Kunle Awotiku Sues for Peaceful Protest

We may protest but let it be peaceful

We can protest and be seen as prospects for the Nation's development and not suspects intending to destroy the Nation.

Dialogue may have become a "broken record" but we must never be tired of exploring this avenue to express our demands and desires.

Let our vision and mission in protesting be towards the Nation's progression and not regression and retardation.

We should allow our focus be on the main issue and not distract our mission with cumbersome agendas, ambiguous and unrealistic requests.

If the truth must be told, Electoral reforms should be our priority because no matter the shout or cry, if our leaders know that they can always have their way, they will do little.

INEC may have betrayed us in many ways and dashed our hopes a countless number of times, but with a structure and reform, it will rise up to its responsibilities.

We are citizens of a rich Nation but we are only seeing "shege" in our cities. They say we should be compatriots but daily push us to compart riots which is not really the wish of the young generation and I am pleading that we should avoid it as much as possible.

It is time for our Nation to be great again. My Fellow citizens, please we may protest, which is obviously our civic and constitutional right, but let us remember not to allow our emotions drive us to take laws into our hands , by destroying properties and affecting daily transactions. Please let us show our maturity and not ground the daily activities of the innocent citizens seeking to get their daily bread. Our Nation thrives on daily transactions and if withheld for too long, it may culminate into more hunger, chaos and dissatisfaction.

You and I will never give up in praying and working towards a better Nigeria

God bless my great Nation Nigeria.

Shun Protest Allow Government To Implement It's Policies - Adelodun Tell Nigerians

The Lagos Planks and Building Materials Market Association and States Sellers  Association
has called on its members and all Nigerians to shun the proposed protest and allow the government to implement its policies.

This appeal was made in Lagos by the association's president, Alhaji Lateef Adelodun and all the members of the group.

Adelodun stated that protest is not the solution to the country's problems and that citizens should allow the government to seek solutions. "We should allow the government to focus on lifting Nigerians out of hardship and implementing the promised 70,000 Naira wages for workers. They should also be allowed to resolve issues in all sectors so that life will improve for all Nigerians."

''The United Nations has warned that some bad actors might hijack protests, similar to how Ugandan President Museveni cautioned his citizens against demonstrations. The recent events in Kenya have not been favorable for its citizens. The Nigerian government should ensure the security and protection of its citizens in all areas, including roads, power supply, schools, and health centers. Kudos to the Lagos State Government,  which as been taking security matter serious due to significant investment in security, and all the states too should try and emulate this good thing.

He used this opportunity to urge the federal government to support the association's collaboration with the Ministry of Environment. He emphasized the need for empowerment through better equipment for tree planting and seed provision. "If we cut one tree, we should be able to plant ten to replace it," he said.

Adelodun mentioned that there is ample land available in all states, and members across the country have agreed to replant trees. He added that this initiative would help combat climate change.

"We should give the federal government more time to address Nigeria's problems, and I believe we will smile in the end," he added

Alhaji Lateef Adelodun and its associate advise Nigerians to stay away from the protest.
