Ibadan convention focuses on virtue of patience

As the 2023 annual convention of Jehovah's Witnesses began in the ancient city of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, the Chairman of the Ibadan 1 Convention, Mr Abiodun Ajuwon, has called on the dwellers to exercise patience in the face of world's challenging situations.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday , the concluding session of the three-day Convention held at the Assembly Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Ifatumo, Lagelu Local Government, Oyo state, Ajuwon, stressed that many people today are becoming very impatient as a result of depressing economic and social conditions.

He says: “All over the world, when you take a look at the lifestyle of many people today, you will observe that it reflects gross impatience. At our places of employment, in our schools, in the marketplace, when people queue up, when they're driving a vehicle, and in many other aspects of life, impatience is so often manifested.”

He continued by urging authority figures, family members, and workmates to endeavor to exercise patience because the virtue is needed in all ramifications of life.

This, according to him, makes the Convention subject theme ‘Exercise Patience’ very timely!

Commenting on the significance of the annual convention, the Chairman also emphasized the importance of why Jehovah's witnesses always gather together in small or large numbers, saying that this was in line with God’s command at Heb. 10 vs 24 & 25, where the scriptures say: We must not forsake the gathering of ourselves together so as to encourage and be encouraged, to refresh and be refreshed as a way of showing honor to God and neighbors in a world where many show a lack of patience.

One of the highlights of the convention was the public talk entitled "WILL GOD ACT IN YOUR BEHALF?" delivered by Mr Abolade Idowu who reminded the Convention attendees of the need to build confidence in prayer despite disappointing life experiences.

"We live in a period of time that things are not easy and if we lose faith in Jehovah, we will not see his hands", he noted while delivering the talk.

In the convention, 42 new ones were baptised in water immersion.

Among the newly baptised was a 53-year-old woman.

Speaking after her baptism, the woman, Mrs Stella Udor, who was excited to have reached her goal of baptism, expressed gratitude to God for the grand privilege to be among fellow worshippers of Jehovah.

She said "I feel happy and fulfilled and I want to do more in the service of Jehovah by assisting others to learn about His wonderful purpose for mankind."

The in-person convention which started on Friday September 15, 2023 at the Ifatumo Assembly Hall is coming after a three-year pause since the Covid-19 restrictions.

Some 6,000 conventions will be held worldwide as part of the 2023 convention series. In Nigeria alone, more than 320 conventions will be held in 39 host cities, out of which 11 will be held in Ibadan city alone.

MOHBAD RALLY: CURB ESCALATION, SECURITY EXPERT WARNS RIBADU, F.G

The National Security Adviser to the President, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu has been advised to rejig the terrorism unit of the NSA's in curtailing any untoward event in the ongoing rallies and gathering under the toga of Justice for Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba popularly known as Mohbad before it escalate beyond control.

A Legal Criminologist and Security Psychologist, Tolu Mustapha gave this advice while analysing the current trend of upsurge in the numbers of peaceful protest seeking a probe into the death of late hip-hop star, Mohbad.

According to him, the rate at which these rallies are springing up across the states of the federation brings to mind the pace at which the end SARS protest started gradually before it was hijacked and eventually dove-tailed into a national calamity.

He said, Individuation is a very key factor that fuels crisis in threat to National security.

"At at a time like this when the new administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is still battling with the issue of fuel subsidy removal, whose effect is still biting hard on the populace, allowing or giving room for unusual gatherings like this one we are witnessing in the country now is a huge threat to the peace and security of the country.

Security agencies at all levels should be put on red alert and the issues at hand should be quickly addressed.

National security is of topmost importance right now and considering the wave of military take-over raging across African countries, Nigeria should not be allowed to fall into the precipice of anarchy.

He specifically noted that looking at the co-ordinated manner and format at which the peaceful rally has been hatched, it calls  to question the source of funding which might not be unconnected to opposition political elements who should not be overlooked in the scheme of things in the country.

NNPP Chieftain, Ajadi Backs Obasanjo's Action Against Obas In Iseyin

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party (NNPP), Comrade Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has threw his weight behind former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the need for the traditional rulers to respect constituted authorities like the Governor and the President.

This is just as the party's gubernatorial candidate in Ogun State in the last general elections also appealed to the traditional rulers to restrain themselves from active and partisan politics but rather remain opinion leaders in the various communities to continue to earn their due respect.

It would be recalled that last Friday some traditional rulers in Oyo state refused to stand up when Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and former President Obasanjo arrived at the venue of the commissioning of the Iseyin campus of the  Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, leading to Chief Obasanjo, allegedly chiding them for their disrespect to the governor and himself.

The development has however started generating reactions with some condemning the former President on his alleged open disparaging of the Obas while others have diverse opinion.

Ajadi while speaking on the issue in a statement on Monday, backed Chief Obasanjo, maintaining that Governors and President be it former or seving deserve respect.

He said traditional rulers should not dabble into active politics but rather continue to preside over their towns or communities while the governors preside over states and the President over the whole country, stating that though the traditional rulers as custodians of our culture deserve respect but respect is reciprocal .

According to him, "When governors or president visit the traditional rulers in their palaces, they usually give them respects they deserved but at the public functions where they are seated before the arrival of the governors or president, courtesy demand that they give respect to the governors or president."

He added that traditional rulers have dabbled into politics, insisting that some of them openly aligned with political parties hence the little respect they received from political office holders.

He highlighted the role of traditional rulers as that of impartial advisors in Nigerian politics, expressing concern that their involvement in partisan politics could lead to their humiliation by political figures.

"Traditional rulers especially the Obas in Yoruba land, would stop being humiliated by any political office holders be it governors or the president when they stop being partisan.

“Our Kings are expected to be fathers for all politicians through the giving of advice and guidance on how to achieve good governance but not being partisan.

"However, what is playing out is that most of them are politically aligned and with their involvement in politics it would be difficult for them to receive their deserved respect", he added.

He therefore wished all the participants a joyful stay in the pacesetter state and journey mercies back to their various destinations.

The Games featuring multiple sporting activities, attracted participants from all Nigeria Polytechnics, Monotechnics, Colleges of Technology and other Stakeholders in at least 30 participating institutions.

NNPP Chieftain, Ajadi Commends INEC's Condemnation Of Few People Claiming Ownership Of Political Parties

A chieftain of the New Nigeria People's Party, (NNPP), Comrade Olufemi  Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) over its recent condemnation of few people claiming to own a political party purely because they are foundation members.

Ajadi in a release made available on Wednesday, said political parties are owned by members, noting that there is no single owner of a political party as all members are equal and there are no founders and no joiners.

It would be recalled that last Friday, INEC kicked against the registration of weak political parties in the country.

The INEC Acting Director, Department of Election and Party Monitoring, Hajiya Hauwa Habib, who made the call while speaking during a programme themed, ‘Validation Session : Needs assessment of political parties in Nigeria’ organised by The Kukah Centre and funded by the European Union (EU), said to register a political party the proponents must have a membership of 24 people from 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to Habib, “The Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer continue to dominate everything about the political party. In their constitutions, they assign duties and schedules to every executive member. The Financial Secretary, Welfare Secretary, and Publicity Secretary are not allowed to perform their duties once the party is registered.

“In the long run when it is a year or two towards election, you find the Secretary and the Chairman struggling on who owns the party. Thereabout, you find factionalisation, they give us problems during elections, rush to the courts and the courts are not helping matters.

“They think that membership of a political party in Nigeria is a joke. It is through the political parties that governance and government are given to citizens. How do you think a political party with 24 people running the party can perform without a presence at the local level during elections?"

However while speaking on the issue, Ajadi who was the governorship candidate of NNPP in the 2023 Governorship Election in Ogun State, said INEC has hit the nail on the head by saying that few people cannot run a party and that a party cannot function without people at the grassroots.

According to Ajadi, "This should be an eye opener to those who are claiming to be the owner of our party, the NNPP. INEC has spoken and spoken genuinely that some  briefcase politicians claimed to be the owners of parties but that political parties are owned by the people.

"Those who are claiming the right of ownership in our party should know the end has come to their shenanigans. Parties are owned by the people and not individuals.

"A political party is not a sole proprietorship or a partnership business. It is owned by all members irrespective of when they join the party. Parties are vehicles for elections and elections are won through the people."

Why my late father deserved to be honoured - Olayinka Segelu

A young Germany-based Nigerian politician and businessman, Hon. Olayinka Oladimeji Segelu, has expressed dismay over the failure of Oyo State government to honour his late father, Chief Hon. (Dr.) Olusegun Moses Akintola Oladimeji Segelu.

In a press statement he issued on the 16th memorial anniversary of his dad, the young Segelu maintained that with the significant role played by his father in the political firmament of Oyo State, he deserved to be posthumously honoured.

Hon. Segelu noted that his father, who was gruesomely murdered 16 years ago (September 14, 2007), contributed in no small measure to the political growth and democratic advancement of Oyo State and Nigeria in general.

He wondered why the family of a man like his dad should be abandoned by the Oyo State government after all the sacrifices he made for the state and was “wickedly killed by fellow politicians.”

His statement reads:

“I remembered vividly the words of the then sitting governor, HE Late Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala when my father, Chief Hon. (Dr.) Olusegun Moses Akintola Oladimeji Segelu was gruesomely killed. Knowing that the gruesome murder of my dad was politically motivated, the late Alao-Akala had, as quoted in the Nation of September 19, 2007, said that ‘Politicians should talk to themselves. This is politics of bitterness. If it were to be in another camp, they would be shouting Adedibu/Akala. These are people who never identified with our camp. We know them but God will definitely expose them.’

“Our father’s name must not be allowed to be wiped away. He fought for his people all his life. He started at the grassroots serving as a Councilor in Lagelu Local Government between 1988 and 1989. He was Chairman, National Republican Convention (NRC) Lagelu Local Government from 1990 to 1992. He was Oyo State Coordinator for Alhaji Bamanga Tukur Presidential Campaign Organisation in 1992. I recall Alhaji Bamanga Tukur celebrating New Year with us in our Eleruko Village more than two times. He was deputy State Chairman of NRC in 1993 and was elected Delegate to National Constitutional Conference in 1994 - 1995 and became Chairman, Lagelu Local Government in 1996. He became the leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo State from 1998 till his life was tragically cut short via a politically orchestrated assassination in 2007.

“He was elected as the State Chairman of the PDP in Oyo State 1999 -2001 and appointed Board Chairman, National Productivity Centre, Abuja from 2001-2004. Elected Member, House of Representatives, National Assembly, Abuja 2007 and was assassinated in his constituency office on September 14, 2007. Governor Seyi Makinde was then the candidate of Oyo South Senatorial District under ANPP.

“I am sure he must have heard about my father’s good deeds before he was killed. I made it a clear statement to the governor during one of my meetings with him that I deserve all the needed political support and assistance from him if not for my personal input in politics but for my father’s sake and the manner he was taken away from us.

“I humbly request that my father’s name should be engraved in the minds of the people. Segelu Bus Stop is known from the 1970s till date and Segelu Area is a well-known area. I hereby request for the New Ife Road from under the bridge going to Gbagi should be named after my father as Segelu Express Road. In the alternative, the newly constructed ultramodern motor park in Iwo-road, Ibadan should be named after him to etch his name in the hearts of the good people of the state. Interestingly, my father was the first private motor park operator in the entire city of Ibadan, with his Segelu Transport Service adjacent to his hotel, along Ife-road, Ibadan. His transport service company could boast of about ten brand new Peugeot 505 cars in his pool at the time.

“I plead with Governor Seyi Makinde to consider the humble request of the family which I am conveying to him on behalf of the family.

“I have been a big fan and supporter of Makinde’s political ambition since 2018 till date. I personally donated a branded bus for his campaign with my team always being around in the 2018-2019 campaign. I branded two vehicles for his second term campaign with full support. I pray my humble request is granted. I wish the governor well as he continues to work diligently round the clock to move the state to greater a height of development and prosperity.”

Olayinka Segelu, an erstwhile Personal Assistant (PA) to ex-Speaker Dimeji Bankole, took after his late father in politics. He contested to secure the ticket of PDP for House of Representatives in 2015 and 2023 to no avail.
