NSF'2024 : Abiodun Inaugurates LOC, Says Ogun Ready To Surpass Past Editions

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, on Monday, inaugurated a 16-man Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the 22nd National Sports Festival to be hosted by the state in 2024.

Abiodun speaking while inaugurating the LOC at the Governor's Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, noted that the state is more than prepared to surpass previous editions and the achievements recorded during the last festival held by the state in 2006.

The governor noted that his government is ready to continue to put in place world-class sporting infrastructure across the length and breadth of the state.

Abiodun who also disclosed that the festival is not about the competition or the performances, said the state under his watch is ready to showcase the talent, culture, potential and unique sense of hospitality of the people of the state.

"We are determined to put in place world-class sporting infrastructures across the length and breadth of the state, thus underscoring our determination to ensure that we host a very befitting sports festival to the admiration of all stakeholders in the sector and around the world

"For us in Ogun State, this festival isn't just about the competition and performances, even though we would love to host and win every medal.

"We want to host a National Sports Festival that will showcase the talent, our culture and potential of our great state as well as a very unique sense of hospitality of our people," he said.

Governor Abiodun while noting that the National Sports Festival brings together the energy, and creativity of youths in the country and also serves as a platform for them to showcase their diverse talents and potential, added that hosting the festival is a testament to the commitment of his administration to empower the next generation by offering them the opportunity for growth and self-development.

The state helmsman while urging members of the committee to embrace the responsibility given to them with a deep sense of purpose, noted that their attention to detail, effective planning and seamless execution would be the magic they would need to host a remarkable edition of the festival.

The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and former Commissioner for Youths and Sports in the State; Bukola Olopade,  commended Governor Abiodun for bidding and winning the right to host a successful National Sports Festival.

He acknowledged Governor Abiodun for being the first governor in the country to ensure that all its athletes at the last National Sports Festival in Delta State went home with cash rewards irrespective of winning or losing.

"You have achieved two seconds to none already when our athletes came back from Delta State and you announced the reward to the athletes. I know I speak authoritatively when I say that has not happened before in this country where every participating athlete got something to take home despite the fact that they didn't come back home with medals. It has never happened before.

"The second thing you've achieved is to put together your Excellency the aficionados of sports today in Nigeria, the gentlemen and women that are assembled here before you today are literally the best brains and minds in sports today in Nigeria," he said.

OYO GOVT CALLS LABOUR TO DIALOGUE

The Oyo State Government has rallied the Nigeria Labour Congress to discuss the issue of salary deductions exhaustively, before embarking on any form of protest.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner of Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Oyo State Government said only three months and not six months are owed workers.

The statement added that every State in the federation owes workers salary deductions and the three months owed by Oyo State is the least.

According to the Commissioner, the NLC had shown over the years that they are in support of the present administration because of good governance, but asked them to reflect on the disposition of government to workers' welfare.

While the July salaries have been paid in Oyo State, not less than 20 states including Ondo, Plateau, Benue and Bayelsa are owing several months of salaries in arrears, while several more including neighbouring states are owing months of deduction arrears.

Oyo State Government started the implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage three years ago, yet up till now many states are still struggling to pay the old wage.

While it is the Right and Entitlement of our workers to access their wages, especially at this tough times, Government implores them to reflect on the sincerity of purpose of this administration.

The statement said despite the challenges of paying wages, over 2,000 civil servants have been promoted, while almost 1,000 others have been converted to regular service.

For the records, Oyo State pays N7.3bn monthly as salaries, yet collects N5bn as Federal Allocation.

Because of this, all the N2.8bn raked in as Internally Generated Revenue IGR are ploughed back literally to service salaries.

Prince Oyelade said Government deserves a pat on the back, if in spite of this tightrope Government still embarks on such magnitude of infrastructural projects, that even the NLC has applauded numerously.

Eminent pundits, including the current Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki have predicted that no state will be able to pay salaries by the end of June this year because of the worsening shape of the economy but Oyo State due to the deft husbanding of the state resources by Gov Seyi Makinde has defied the doomsday prediction.

This is why the State Government is confident that the NLC will come to the negotiating table and together with Government chart a realistic path in balancing the welfare of the workers to which Government is obviously committed and the unpleasant economic indices that stare all of us in the face.

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government  urges workers to resume at their duty-posts, and continue the good work they are known for.

RE: UNFOUNDED ALLEGATIONS OF ILLICIT FOREX DEALINGS INVOLVING BUA GROUP

Our attention has been brought to various false allegations published against BUA Group on some online platforms.

BUA Group categorically refutes the baseless allegations of illicit forex

dealings with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) from January to March 2016. These accusations, propagated online by Mr. Desmond Ike-Chima and Mr. Oliver Fejiro of ENigeria News and

SecretReporters respectively, are false and entirely unfounded.

These individuals, known for their

involvement in cyberstalking, blackmail, and defamation, have faced previous arrests (see news reports attached) for such misconduct, casting a dark shadow over their credibility.

We emphatically state that neither BUA Group nor the Chairman of the Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, received any of the alleged foreign exchange allocations from the CBN during the indicated period. This fact is corroborated by the CBN and the respective banks.

Furthermore, in compliance with CBN’s regulations, all forex transactions by banks during 2016, were published publicly in national newspapers (some copies attached). These records, still

accessible today, provide unequivocal evidence that counters these false allegations.

We, therefore, challenge Mr. Ike-Chima, Mr. Fejiro, and their sponsors to validate their claims with concrete evidence. We urge the public and our stakeholders to disregard these deceptive publications in light of these facts. We have engaged the necessary law enforcement agencies

and initiated legal action against the perpetrators under the Cybercrime Prohibition Prevention Act, Laws of the Federation, 2015.

Subsidy removal : Ajadi tasks Tinubu on provision of reliefs for Nigerians

A chieftain of the New Nigeria's People's Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has called on President Bola Tinubu, to immediately provide succour to Nigerians who have been suffering untold hardship as a result of the removal of subsidy on petroleum products.

Ajadi who bemoaned the current hardship being suffered by Nigerians cautioned Tinubu, noting that the welfare of Nigerians should be his priority.

The Ogun State gubernatorial candidate of the NNPP in the last general election, in a statement, said Tinubu ought to have planned well and put in place palliative measures before removing subsidy on  petroleum products.

He condemned the dilly - dallying over palliatives, stating that people are going through excruciating pain and that they deserve immediate succour

He said, "First of all, you can no longer delay the palliatives because your policies are bitting hard on ordinary Nigerians.

"There is the need for the President to increase civil servant salaries and when that is done, he should not forget the pensioners.

"I suggest N200, 000 minimum wage for workers to cushion the effects of the removed subsidy.

"Acceding to N200,000 minimum wage will show that President Tinubu is a democrat who cares for the welfare of the citizens he is governing", Ajadi said.

On the ministerial nominees by the President, Ajadi said the names reeled out by the President is a disappointment to Nigerians.

"We are expecting young and energetic Nigerians as Ministers. The recycling of old politicians in Tinubu's cabinet is a disappointment.

"Nigerians at this time needed committed, highly resourceful youths, not recycling of old and bemused politicians, most of whom did nothing tangible in the states they ruled for eight years.

"President Tinubu is getting it wrong with the calibre of people he has picked to work with. Most of the ministerial nominees have been in government since 1999. Nigeria needs young people with fresh ideas and enough energy and  mental resources because the country is presently in a precarious situation", Ajadi added in the statement.

LAGOS HOST FIRST CIRCULAR ECONOMY HOTSPOT IN AFRICA

The Lagos State Government has launched the first-ever circular economy hotspot in Africa with the aim of building an economic system that is driven by innovativeness and sustainable consumption model to save the future generations of resource scarcity.

The two-day event with the theme: “Towards a Circular and Resourceful Economy: The Future Lagos”, is organized by the Lagos State Government and is taking place at Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island.

The event is geared towards pioneering the transformation of the current production order towards regeneration and sustainability.

At the unveiling of the unique initiative in collaboration with Circular Economy Innovation Partnership (CEIP) and African Circular Economy Network,

Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu stated that the idea is aimed at engendering a new pattern of production and consumption that  encompasses producing, repairing and recycling of used materials, noting that the concept of circular economy is based on regeneration of products for continuing production in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly manner.Sanwo-Olu who disclosed that the event is coming at a time the nation is adopting a new process to free up its limited resources and optimally channel it towards addressing the different socio-economic needs of the citizens, revealed that core principle of circular economy encourages citizen’s engagements and partnerships to sustain a resilient socio-economic development for Lagos State.“

The Lagos Circular Economy Hotspot 2023 is of utmost importance, not only for Lagos and Nigeria, but for the entire sub-Saharan Africa. Developing countries like ours have contributed the least to global warming, but are suffering the worst impacts of climate change.

We are also at a disadvantage when it comes to having access to the resources and strategies needed to fight climate change or adapt to its impact”, he acknowledged. While reiterating his administration’s commitment to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth through the encouragement of sustainable consumption and production patterns, the Governor disclosed that the “THEMES-PLUS Agenda”, the plus (+) that is developed to focus, on Social Inclusion, Gender Equality and Youth development will support the achievement of the Circular Economy Initiative.Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the State’s journey to circular economy began three years ago when Lagos brought stakeholders together on a roundtable to discuss options towards a resourceful and waste-free economy.

He said a technical working group on “Circular Lagos” was set up in 2021 to coordinate and facilitate the development of the initiative, while supporting and monitoring the project implementation.

The Governor emphasized that the economic and commercial activities that abound in the State, along with its major link to international businesses and the outside world, has made Lagos a beacon of hope and prosperity that attracts a constant influx of people which translates to a constant growth in population.

He stated that the attendant pressure on our limited resources therefore require a deliberate shift from materialization to de-materialisation that will improve the state’s profile of compliance with SDG Goals 8, 9 and 12 on promotion of “inclusive growth, building a resilient infrastructure.Co-chairman of the Circular Economy Innovation Partnership, Mr. Bolaji Akinboro, said the concept of circular economy would allow the State to construct a new cycle of material use and save the future generations from scarcity. He said by the development, Lagos had set the pace for a new model of economy which would set new trends and standards in sustainability and lay the foundation for big businesses operating in Lagos to key into the new economic trend.Consular General of the Kingdom of Netherlands, Mr. Michael Deelen, congratulated Lagos for being the first sub-national to embark on a circular economic project, noting that it was time for Nigeria to have a change of perspective and expectations.Deelen, represented by Deputy Consular General, Ms. Leone Van der Stijl, observed that the climate change had been projected to become more severe and would hit a point where the planet’s ecosystem would no longer replenish the resources being used up.

The envoy said: “With 70 percent of Nigeria's population under the age of 30, the possibility of climate change tainting their future is exponentially higher.

This simply means there will be more people living with more scarcity in the future from the scarcity we are creating today.“It makes sense to replace the current linear model of grab, use and dump to a circular model of feeding recycled materials back into the system.

The Netherlands is willing to provide the knowledge and capacity needed to build the circular economic model

.”At the event, Lagos State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Netherlands Circular Hotspot on technical cooperation and knowledge exchange towards accelerating the implementation of policies that will promote circular economy.

The Event was attended by Honourable Members of the State House of Assembly, the Consulates of Netherland, Germany and Finland, Members of the Diplomatic Community, World Bank Group, Business Leaders, Top Government Functionaries, Non-Government Organisations, Corporate Bodies and Sustainable Development Advocates.

Oyo Assembly Condemns Kidnap of Medical Doc, Young Lady in Okeho : Charges Security Operatives to Help Secure Their Release

The Oyo State House of Assembly has condemned in strong terms the recent kidnap of a Medical practitioner working with Baptist Medical Centre in Okeho, Dr. D.O Lawal and a young lady by the name, Kafilat.

The victims were reportedly kidnapped on Sunday 23rd July, 2023 in a Micra taxi by unknown men along Okeho/Isemi road in Kajola Local Government and since them their whereabouts have remained unknown.

The kidnap case was brought before the Oyo State House of Assembly on Tuesday by member representing Kajola State Constituency, Hon Musibau Azeez (Action) in a Matter of Urgent Public Importance.

Hon Musibau Azeez states "that the rate of insecurity, especially kidnapping in recent times in Oyo State is alarming. It has become a matter of major concern that requires urgent attention. Despite the efforts of the administration of His Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde in providing necessary logistics and support for security Agencies to work with in making sure that crime is reduced to the bearest minimum in Oyo State, It is quite unfortunate and disturbing that some wicked elements are bent on destabilizing the peace and tranquility being enjoyed and also rubbish the efforts put in place by the Government from time to time.

" Aware that despite the frantic efforts of Security Agents, nobody could trace the whereabouts of the two victims and no phone call has been heard from the kidnappers to request for ransom or otherwise."

" The unwholesome and negative occurrence has threatened peace, security and economy of Okeho, Kajola Local Government and the State. If care is not taken, this may send negative signals to local and foreign investors who are willing to partner with Oyo State thereby having negative effect on our economy. Observes that people living in Okeho in Oke - Ogun Area of the State now live in panic and fear, farmers are afraid of going to farm, people are afraid of being engaged in their daily business activities because of fear of being killed or kidnapped. Cases of such kidnapping were recently reported in Iseyin area in Oke Ogun where people paid huge amount of money as ransom to rescue their people from the hands of these nefarious individuals despite the hard times being experienced in the country.

Concerned that lack of synergy among Security Agencies and poor surveillance could be the reason for the rise in insecurity especially kidnapping in Oyo State despite having a law in place prohibiting the act of kidnappings in the State. "

The House resolved with a call on the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State and other Security Agencies to urgently swing into action and secure the release of Dr D.O Lawal and the young lady, Kafilat.

The lawmakers also urged the Adhoc Committee on Security to expedite action towards organizing a Security Summit that would serve as a platform for all the Security Agencies in the State to deliberate on the security challenges facing the State and proffer necessary solutions.

The Oyo State House of Assembly equally called on the Executive Arm of Government through the Ministry of Public Works and Transport to put necessary machineries in place towards the installation of CCTV cameras, security light and other gadgets in strategic locations in the State in order to expose or identify faces of criminals in the State.

EFCC, Police launch manhunt for Paul Demudia Eigbefoh over N67.5m fraud

A suspected fraudster trading under the business name “Capital Plus Investment Services Ltd”, owned by Paul Demudia Eigbefoh is on the run after allegedly defrauding a leading oil and gas company in the country to the tune of N67.5million last week.

The affected firm has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for recovery of N67.5 million alleged to have been fraudulently obtained by the fleeing Paul Demudia Eigbefoh, also known as Paul Smith.

The firm in a petition dated July 24 2023 by its counsel, Bala Omar Yakubu and Co, and addressed to the EFCC Lagos Command, alleged that Paul Demudia Eigbefoh and Capital Plus Investment Services Limited, obtained the sum of N67.5 million, under false pretence.

It disclosed that Paul Demudia Eigbefoh who held himself out as the alter-ego of Capital Plus approached the conglomerate to offer it financial services to augment its working capital.

The petition read in part, "Our company which deals in petroleum down section of the economy and has retail outlets in some Southwest States and the Federal Capital Territory.

The firm had applied for a loan facility but was asked to pay N67.5million to enjoy the facility. No sooner had the said money paid to the suspected fraudster, Paul Demudia Eigbefoh that he bolted away from his known office and house addresses and also switched-off his phone since last week.

"As part of the condition for the said disbursement, the said Paul Demudia Eigbefoh insisted that the company make an equity contribution to the sum of N60,000,000 million, notwithstanding that he had asked for an initial collateral of our client's movable assets."

It added that the persistence of Paul Demudia Eigbefoh that the equity contribution be paid in order to facilitate the said disbursement led to the payment of the amount, noting that it paid the sum of N7,500,000 on July 14, 2023 as processing fee charges and N60 million as equity contribution into the company's account.

It stated further that the money were paid into Fidelity Bank Plc account number 5600141150 belonging to Capital Plus Investment Services Limited, alleging that shortly after the last tranche of N60 million was received by Capital Plus Investment Services Limited, it shut down all means of communications with it.

It similarly disclosed that its officials had to visit the company's address at Block 69, Kusenla Road, Ikate Lekki in Lagos State but found the place deserted, stating that on detecting this it notified its bankers, who in turn got in touch with the recipient beneficiary bank, Fidelity Bank Plc to notify it of the said fraud.

"It was discovered by Fidelity Bank that as soon as the said sum was received, the said company moved it in tranches to other beneficiaries of the said fraud in other Banks.

The company has therefore urged the EFCC commander to help use his good office in treating the case as a matter of urgency.

All efforts by reporters to reach Paul Demudia Eigbefoh through his house and office addresses were futile, just as his widely known phone contact 08060510537 was switched-off, since Friday.

I am not Satisfied with Outcome of 2023 Ogun Gubernatorial Election - Oguntoyinbo

The gubernatorial candidate of New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), in Ogun state, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, has again declared that he is not satisfied with the outcome of the 2023 gubernatorial election in the state.

Ajadi noted that many residents of the state who were ready to vote for the party, could not find the name of the party on the ballot paper as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) omitted the name of the party on the ballot papers during the election.

He noted that as a result of this, he is not satisfied with the outcome of the election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on 18th March 2023.

Ajadi, made these disclosures during his investiture as patron of Correspondents' chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State council on Saturday.

The event which was held at NUJ secretariat in Ibadan was attended by former Board Chairman, National Lottery Commission, Alhaji Fatai Ibikunle, former Chairman of Oluyole local government and Chief Press Secretary (CPS) to late former governor Lam Adesina, Alhaji Kehinde Olaosebikan, NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ademola Babalola and Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Raji Adebayo.

Others are; South West Publicity Secretary of NNPP, Kilamuwaye Badmus; Ogun state Chairman of the NNPP, Prince Ibrahim Adekunle, Ogun State Publicity Secretary, Comrade Kehinde Olowu; Oyo State NNPP PRO, Olaitan Femi Hero and NNPP Ogun state women leader, Precious Foluke Bagbansoro

Ajadi who spoke on the topic, "Contesting in Nigeria's 2023 general elections: Ogun state experience", insisted that he had a terrible experience during the campaign.

The NNPP candidate while speaking on his experience added that he survived several attacks, intimidations and threats from sponsored thugs and hoodlums.

He then insisted that he and his political party are not satisfied with the outcome of the elections because many eligible voters who wished to vote for the political party were disenfranchised.

According to him, "I am not comfortable with the outcome of the election due to how INEC robbed our party because they know that Nigerians are clamouring for a new Nigeria.

"And as a result of that they do not want any political party to come up aside the two giant political parties in the country; APC and PDP. And as a result of that Nigerians found it difficult to recognise only logo while the INEC omitted our party's name on the ballot papers during the election.

"Because other political parties names were seen on the ballot papers, they saw the name beside the logo on the ballot papers. The constitution of Nigeria does not only recognise logos without names on ballot papers.

"Even, if the political party did not write them they should know that they were supposed to write the name of the party which is New Nigeria's Political Party (NNPP). I have a copy of the letter sent to them from the national that this party's name is not included in the ballot papers that they should make a correction, but it is so unfortunate that on that very day, on the day of election, the presidential election, we found out that the name of our political party was missing on the ballot papers.

"I personally wrote a letter to INEC in Ogun state that the governorship election coming up, that they should make sure that our political party name is included in the ballot papers they are going to print, but it is so disappointing that one the day of governorship election, we could not find the name on the ballot papers.

"So therefore we went to court that the INEC has failed Nigerians, because people cannot recognise our political party and we were strike out that they cannot do anything on that. The second at appeal which happened to take place in Ibadan here, the judge did not even look at the ruling of the tribunal. It is so unfortunate that the judiciary is corrupt in the sense that the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) that we gave money to represent us did not appear at the appeal court.

"If we are going to re-contest the election again, I am sure of my party's victory in the state. If we are to conduct the election again, I am sure of my party's victory".

In his welcome address, the Chairman of Oyo State Correspondents' Chapel, Raji Adebayo appealed to the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the implementation of subsidy removal policy and hasten the palliatives to cushion its effects.

He implored Tinubu to channel the proceeds from subsidy to infrastructural developments.

"It is with a great joy that I welcome you all to the first edition of this lecture since our executive came on board in the last nine months and the Investiture of our lecturer, Hon Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo the gubernatorial candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections in Ogun state.

"The experience is everywhere, even though we are experiencing post election happenings presently, among which is the removal of fuel subsidy, and I think everyone of us is feeling the impact of a policy. This is why we all have to participate in the electoral process because whether you like it or not, the effects of a poorly implemented policy can cause disruption in the lives of those who voted and those who did not vote.

"But I will appeal to the federal government under the leadership of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the implementation of the policy and hasten the palliatives to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal. We implore him to channel the proceeds from subsidy to infrastructural developments. We need good roads, medical facilities, education, and particularly security".

did not know INEC has lawyer- PDP's subpoenaed witness tells Ogun Tribunal

A subpoenaed witness called by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Eze Desmond, from GRA Road, Sagamu, who claimed to be an ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has declared that he was not aware that the commission has a lawyer.

Desmond made this declaration when being cross-examined by the counsel of Governor Dapo Abiodun, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan, SAN, who objected to the documents tendered by the witness but reserved his objection to his final address.

The witness was responding to a question put to him by Osipitan, who queried how he got the contact address of PDP's lawyer who he claimed he approached upon receiving a subpoena to appear before the tribunal.

Osipitan, while cross-examining the witness also asked about how he got the subpoena and the address he used, to which he responded that it was addressed to him personally and not through INEC.

The witness, who was a corps member said he completed his mandatory service year on May 18th and that he didn't inform INEC about the subpoena and his intention to appear before the panel as an ad-hoc staff of the electoral umpire.

When asked about his experience on the issue of alleged violence where he worked, he said he did not witness any, contrary to what the document he tendered indicates.

Also, a witness of the PDP, Bamidele Aiyedun, from Ikenne, to the dismay of many admitted that there is something wrong in his statement of oath.

Another subpoenaed witness for PDP, Oristhefe Okotipi, who claimed to have worked for INEC as an ad-hoc staff during the gubernatorial poll could not mention the serial numbers of the booklet used for the governorship and House of Assembly elections.

He couldn't also provide any evidence that confirm that he truly worked for INEC, as he admitted that the commission was not in the know of his appearance before the tribunal.

Meanwhile, all the counsels to the respondents expressly objected to those documents tendered before the tribunal by the PDP's subpoenaed witnesses.

They however, reserved their objections to their final addresses.

PERIOD POVERTY: LASG DISTRIBUTES SANITARY KITS TO STUDENTS

As part of the effort towards addressing the challenges of period poverty among female residents, the Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals and Investment has commenced the distribution of sanitary towels to female students in secondary schools across the state.

At the official distribution of sanitary towels to education districts in the State under the End Period Poverty Programme held at the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, Alausa, Ikeja, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Sustainable Development Goals and Investment, Mrs. Abosede George acknowledged government shared aspiration towards ending poverty in all ramifications and promoting gender equality,

She described the initiative as a crucial step towards ensuring good health and wellbeing among the children in the state public schools, noting that poor menstrual health and hygiene undercuts fundamental rights including the right to work and go to school for women and girls who menstruate.

Acknowledging the urgency of the matter, Mrs George said the Office of SDGs and Investment launched a pad bank project to ensure that female students in public secondary schools have access to menstrual products.

“Access to menstrual products and proper sanitation facilities is not just a matter of convenience; it is a matter of fundamental rights and dignity. Poor menstrual health and hygiene limit the opportunities for our women and girls. When our children cannot afford proper menstrual hygiene items such as tampons and sanitary towels or are lacking adequate Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities to carry out proper menstrual hygiene, they are denied quality education”, she stated.

According to her, “It is not surprising that the United Nation set aside every 28th of May as the World Menstrual Hygiene Day to call the attention of policy makers to the burden experienced by girls and women as a result to their inability to access menstrual kits. By promoting proper menstrual hygiene, we empower young girls to focus on their education and personal development without the added burden of period poverty”.

She revealed that having taking cognizance of the complex challenges that are associated with period poverty, Governor Sanwo-Olu has continued to advocate for multi-dimensional approach to ensure the health and wellbeing of women and girls are prioritized and that they are more comfortable during their cycle.

While stating that the state government has been at the forefront of purposeful leadership in the effort towards the actualization key targets of United Nation 2030 Agenda, she explained that the present administration’s developmental policy through T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda addresses key targets of the global ambition.

She acknowledged that to break the silence around menstruation and bequeath a more inclusive and equitable future, Mrs George urged all stakeholders, including private sector partners, non-governmental organizations, and civil society organizations, to support government in this important mission and create lasting change in improving the lives of thousands of young girls and women across our state.

“We must recognize the far-reaching impact of period poverty on the lives of women and girls and remain committed to finding holistic solutions to address this pressing issue. Tackling period poverty requires a comprehensive approach that goes beyond just providing menstrual products. It involves addressing the underlying factors that contribute to this problem, including access to proper sanitation facilities, education, and awareness”, she emphasized.

With a total of 4000 sanitary pads distributed to female students in the 6 Education Districts of the state, the Office pledged to continue the project with support from private sector, NGOs and the civil society organizations.
