Implement Policies to Halt Japa, Oyo NUJ Chairman Tells President -Elect

The President-Elect,  Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has been urged to ensure evolvement and implementation of policies that will effectively check brain drain syndrome when he takes over the reins of power from May 29, 2023 as President of Nigeria because of the serious negative implications of the Japa menace on the nation's future.

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Oyo State Council,  Chief Ademola Babalola, gave the urge, on Sunday when he chaired the Men's Fellowship anniversary of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Eagle's Wings Assembly,  Wakajaye Road, Iyana Church, Ibadan with the theme: 'Worse Than Infidel'.

According to the NUJ chairman in the state, Babalola, "The rate at which Nigeria is losing her young ones of productive age, especially educated and skilled youth to brain drain syndrome, otherwise known as 'japa', is not only alarming, it  also portends serious danger for the future of the country. If care is not taken, there will be acute shortage of professionals in the country in the nearest future that will cut across different fields of human endeavours.

"The fact is that we cannot stop them from travelling to seek greener pastures abroad. We cannot also blame those that have been travelling. How can we blame them when Nigeria is not even a country where young people can find succour? Imagine a doctorate degree holders, ending up as drivers or security guard,  when they could not secure jobs that are commensurate with their levels of qualifications. Those of them that want to go into business, how will they get start-up capital in this contemporary Nigeria of man-know-man? If you don't  have the connections,  you are on your own.

"These young elements have been taking the risks because the situation of Nigeria is turning them to a sort of nuisance. Do you even want to talk about the bad economy? What about regular electricity supply? What about insecurity in the land? What about high unemployment rate and so on? These factors are killing.

"Therefore, I use this medium to call on the incoming administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the country to leave no stone unturned towards revamping and diversifying the economy of Nigeria, creating mass employment opportunities, pumping of more money into provision of housing scheme for low-income earners, as well as everything that the government can do to make Nigerian youth stay in the country and at the same time be prosperous."

Babalola however,  appealed to Christians and Muslims in the country,  to pray for the betterment of Nigeria, support the incoming administration of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu with fervent prayers as well as all tiers of government for the country to overcome the brain drain syndrome.

The guest minister, Pastor Peculiar Adegbite, speaking on the theme of the anniversary with the topic: "Who is a faithful man", urged men to provide the basic things which include leadership,  anointing and money to their homes. These things according to him will make a better family and society at large.

The senior pastor of CAC Eagles' Wings Assembly,  Pastor Joseph Akinade, who lauded the presence of the NUJ executives led by the chairman,  Comrade Babalola, offered prayers for the union, men and the nation at large.

The Chairman, Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, Hon Sikiru Sanda, who doubles as the Chairman, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON), who was the special guest of honour, commended religious organisations for their role in nation building through their prayers.

Easter: Oyo NUJ advocates responsible, responsive leadership in Nigeria, celebrates Christians

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has congratulated all christians in the state and the entire country on the occasion of this year's Easter celebration, which is all about the commemoration of the significance of the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.

The congratulatory message was contained in a statement jointly endorsed by the NUJ Chairman in the state, Chief Ademola Babalola, and Secretary,  Comrade Olusola Oladapo, on Sunday.

According to the statement: "Easter is a season that brings fresh memory of how Jesus Christ, who was without sin, was betrayed, arrested, judged, beaten, nailed to the cross, buried and resurrected on the third, as he had foretold that he would do in order to save people from the bondage of sins and reconcile them back to Almighty God.

"Without the death and resurrection of Christ, the work of salvation would not be complete and there won't be Christianity today. It is a time of celebration as well as a season of sober reflection to ruminate on the lessons of Easter.

"Therefore, the significance of Easter has to do with determination, selflessness, overcoming of fear, obedience to the will of God, eternal life, forgiveness of sins, removal of curses of mankind over eating of forbidden fruits by the first man on earth, assurance that God will not abandon His loved ones as He did not abandon Jesus Christ in the tomb, as well as the privilege to pray in the name of Jesus Christ and so on."

The NUJ in Oyo State, however,  appealled to everyone, including outgoing and incoming political office holders to emplace the lessons and significance of Easter appropriately in their lives, The lesson, Babalola said, should reflect in their live, in their relationship with God, and mankind, adding that people should love one another and live together in harmony, irrespective of

"The leaders that we have in every capacity  should at the same time administer with the fear or God. They should know that death is inevitable end of every mortal. But there is life after death. Everybody shall appear before the judgment throne. It is incontrovertible that everyone will give account of his or her stewardship before God. If your work should pass through fire on the judgment day, will it come out glittering like gold, or its will be burnt. So, I urge our political leaders, and other leaders at various capacities, to be responsible and be responsive in leadership.

Babalola also prayed for the peace and unity of Nigeria, especially as the country moves towards the commencement of a new political dispensation.

Islamic scholar counsels elected public officers on consequences of unkept promises

A renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Hashim Atere has warned Nigerians, especially elected public office holders on the consequences of not keeping electoral promises.

Atere gave the warning during the fifth annual Shina Peller/NUJ Ramadan lecture/Iftar held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists(NUJ) Press Centre in Ibadan.

The annual lecture/Iftar is sponsored by the Ayedero of Yoruba land, Hon. Shina Peller (Accord-Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa).

The lecture entitled 'Inescapable Rewards of Kept and Unkept Promises in Public Offices: The Islamic Perspective' was well attended by journalists and politicians from across different religious groups.

Atere warned elected public officers to always adhere to the bond between them and the electorate, saying Almighty God frowns so much at unkept promises.

He said every promise made was a debt that must be redeemed, saying Allah considered not fulfilling promises as a great sin.

"Our public office holders should always know that they were elected based on promises made to the people in the presence of God.

"Whatever promise made by elected president governor, senator, house of Representatives member, House of Assembly, Chairman or Councilor is made with God.

"There is always reward for every promise kept and consequences for every unkept promise. Always ensure you keep all promises made," he said.

The Islamic scholar said that the people were not also exempted from keeping to their promises, adding Almighty Allah made it compulsory for all.

He commended Peller for his good  deeds and steadfastness, praying that Almighty Allah would grant his heart desires soon.

Peller described the topic of the lecture as very interesting and timely, saying it came at a critical time when Nigerians were about to witness transition in power.

"It is very crucial topic that dwells on great leadership quality that can bring the needed transformation and make Nigeria an enviable country when leaders imbibe it," he said.

He said that a good leader was one who make promises to people and fulfil the promise after grabbing such power.

The lawmaker said that a good leader genuinely loves his or her people when he or she fulfil promises and makes his or her subjects major priority.

"As a leader, you can't claim that you are a good Muslim if you fail to honour the promises you made to the people you are leading

"Allah considers not fulfilling promises a great sin. Allah emphasizes this in the Holy Quran, Chapter 16, verse 2 and 3," he said.

Peller explained why he contested the Senate seat instead of returning to the House of Representatives for another term.

He said that the action was in fulfilment of a promise made to his people during the 2019 general election campaigns in the spirit of equity and fairness among the four local governments in the constituency.

According to him, I chose not to return to the House for the second term in fulfillment of the promise made.

"For the sake of integrity, my decision was based on my consideration of other local governments within my constituency- Kajola and Iwajowa who haven’t presented a representative for almost 16 years now."

Alhaji Ademola Babalola, the State NUJ Chairman, thanked Peller for consistent sponsoring of the programme and unflinching support to the union.

Babalola said that the lecture was apt and timely ahead of the inauguration of newly elected public of holders at the just concluded general elections.

He said that the lecture educated elected public office holders and other Nigerians on the need to keep every promises made at any given period of time.

"This lecture highlighted the rewards inherent in keeping and not keeping promises as stated in the Holy Quran," he said.

Babalola appreciated Peller and Atere, praying that Almighty Allah continue to bless them abundantly.
